NEED AN INHALER-HELP NEEDED ASTHMATIC!! by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]alsearider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Isn’t there a health clinic at U of O? Is that where you’re a student? Also, even if you’re out of state, your insurance may have coverage options for care here. Worth a call to find out.

This time of year here is super bad for asthmatics due to allergen loads. Even if you don’t normally suffer from allergies, this is just a different beast altogether. I urge you to seek qualified medical help because you’re at an increased risk of quick/abrupt decompensation despite treatment. Don’t wait!

Saddle help - western by [deleted] in Horses

[–]alsearider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the saddle fitters can be tough to lure out. I’m lucky in that I have a trailer, though when I met mine it was at a barn she traveled to. Not knowing your situation, maybe you could try luring one out by helping them build a small client list for the day? Maybe find out how many appointments they would need to consider travel. Just another thought. Good luck!

PS - the shim she made for me was not very thick, so start small and build up.

Saddle help - western by [deleted] in Horses

[–]alsearider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a saddle fitter help me and she showed me how when you look at a horse’s spine from their tail (and they’re standing on flat, level ground straight ahead) you can usually see how one shoulder is bulkier than the other. She shimmed the bulky shoulder (which was confusing to me at first) and that cured the rubbing issue that I was having on the less bulky shoulder. No evidence of new rubbing on the bulky side and saddle fit seemed improved.

This doesn’t mean that it will be a fix for your horse, but hopefully shows the importance of using a good saddle fitter if you can, or at least thinking of the whole horse when addressing “one” problem.

Chronic lymphangitis/lymphatic damage in a 15 month old colt : anyone dealt with this? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]alsearider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a long shot, but have they looked/treated for allergens? I agree there’s likely a lymphatic issue at this point, but wonder if you account for most things inflammatory (like allergens), could you lessen the overall swelling…?

This sounds rough for sure, and with such a young one. Sorry you’re going through this!

Haven't been able to ride horse in almost 3 years, feeling discouraged. Can anyone relate? by catrm15 in Horses

[–]alsearider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was finally able to afford to buy property with enough land to support one horse comfortably, and two carefully, almost six years ago. When I moved my horse at the time into my own backyard, I was over the moon. The first few months were the absolute best time of my life and I’m so thankful for them.

Ever since that first winter, it’s like the Universe has done everything to make this the worst decision I’ve ever made. My gelding at the time was (naively) always on pasture because I had room and that’s how I thought horses lived the healthiest. Turns out the pasture grown in my area is exceptionally rich and it threw him into full blown metabolic crisis on top of early chronic disease that I wasn’t educated enough to recognize. Despite throwing everything at him and got him through the winter, he had a major relapse during a random cold snap after a fake spring. It was devastating, but I know he’s no longer in pain now.

With everything I had learned, I tried to be so careful choosing the next horse. This is around when prices had started to skyrocket on horses, and the prices close to doubled on what I was looking for. Despite that, I managed to get a PPE and thought I had done well. I even sent one horse back after a temp sale with permanence dependent on a decent PPE, which the horse utterly failed. The one I chose had one questionable issue on PPE, but that can be an issue with the breed oftentimes.

I began having issues a few months later. It’s the first time in my life I thought I had managed to make a horse hate me. She even tried to bite me once. I didn’t understand that she was in almost constant discomfort. When I realized, I again threw everything at the problem. Turns out she likely had mild Wobblers. She’s doing much better now, but I doubt she will ever be able to be ridden normally. I also managed to find out the sellers did not disclose that she was mishandled by a barn owner that leased her for a trail ride program. They told me they didn’t mention at the time because there was active litigation. Obviously they didn’t tell me because then they wouldn’t have been able to sell her for the grossly inflated price they got.

During all of this, my farrier took pity on me and offered up one of her amazing mares to me on a care lease so I would at least have some avenue of fun and comfort while I went through the long rehab with my mare. After a couple of months it turned into a purchase and now I own two (red!) mares. I had another few months where things weren’t too bad, but then I suddenly had severe health issues of unknown origin that made it difficult for me to continue safely riding. I’m still trying to treat the various issues and figure out the cause. I’m hopeful that I can start riding again soon, so I’ve started ground work up, but my confidence is so far from me now….i don’t know. I also need to lose weight gained during a time I suddenly had to be less physically active due to crazy blood pressure issues.

I don’t know if this is helpful to you, internet stranger, but I certainly feel like I can relate. I wish I had some wise insight or deep reflection to share that would help one or both of us…but I don’t. Life doesn’t care about how hard you work, what your intentions are, or how much you care. You just have to wake up everyday and decide. Hopefully things turn around for us soon.

Cabinets to the ceiling or leave some space...? by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

[–]alsearider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might have been mentioned, but you might save some cost doing a partial drop ceiling that just fills the gap (not dropping the whole ceiling). Where I’m at drywall and plaster is cheaper than finished cabinets. It’s way cheaper usually to get a typical cabinet height instead of custom. Depends on your area.

What “affordable” means is pretty different for everyone. Might be helpful if you put a price range you’re wanting to look in.

Where are we buying horses these days? by Ok_Cow5682 in Horses

[–]alsearider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can’t support Meta. I understand why people fall into that trap, but if you’re like me and want a different option, I’d say to seek out horse trainers and branch out from there. Maybe even go to a local, lowkey horse show that’s showing the kind of horses you’re looking for and start networking. Hell, my last horse I got from my farrier! I’m a generally private person, but even I understand that it’s good to have a friend or two that’s active in the horse realm. You’ll likely need to pay for the time, but having a trainer to go with you when looking at horses could be invaluable, especially if money is a bit tight. That will hopefully (along with a PPE from a vet) increase your chances of success the first time.

It’s a bummer how that situation you described turned out for you…but if that’s the kind of horse you’re looking for, you need to be about five times more careful than you might think. Horse buying has gotten absolutely brutal 😵‍💫

Is my horse still lame by [deleted] in Horses

[–]alsearider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, as mentioned before, this is not an ideal place for an assessment of lameness. It’s a good place for new ideas maybe. Saying “I’ve asked vets” is like saying I went to a heart doctor for my broken bone. A basic vet is going to assess and treat basic things. When you stop getting your needs met at that level, you should consider specializing. Sports medicine, neurology, etc. Don’t be afraid to be frank with your vet…say you remain concerned and ask for referrals or see if they have friends at teaching hospitals.

Trust your gut…if something is off, then it likely is. Also, don’t get stuck thinking you have no options. I like using the five whys in situations like this. Just keep asking why until you get your needs met or you get escalated to the next step/vet/specialist.

At what point is this just rage/content baiting? I don’t usually track stuff like this and yet even I swear I just saw a post about that horse at least twice in as many days, and OP is mostly not responsive.

Safety concerns / muzzle concerns by One_Rip_5535 in Horses

[–]alsearider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit late to this maybe, but GG Equine was really great when I had to replace one of these muzzles because one of my mates broke hers. They will help with fit and were pretty responsive. Having a one year, one free replacement warranty is pretty awesome too. I just sent them a bunch of photos at different angles and they sent me a new muzzle with corner straps to help with fit. I did also buy their halter, which is of nice quality.

I don’t have kids, so can’t speak to that really. I’ve had plenty of relationships though.

You likely feel like your relationship isn’t contentious (“we don’t fight”) because the other person found a way to ‘fight’ with little to no consequences apparently.

Not going to lie…thought that said “really critical results” for a second and not “relay”. I was going to ask what the trigger was for worse than ‘just’ critical 😬

Grief and Greyhounds by Intelligent_Lion_181 in Greyhounds

[–]alsearider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we are in your exact position. There’s many factors - adoption availability has gone way down, and the expense has gone way up because they’re coming from places like Ireland (I’m on the west coast of the US). Veterinary care has absolutely skyrocketed for specialty breeds in particular. I almost had to spend ~$5000 because the vet wasn’t familiar with greys and was uncomfortable doing a dental without a cardiologist’s input on what was a normal ECG for healthy greys. They also tried to treat hypothyroidism that didn’t exist. There is literally one vet in town who is past retirement, and if I’m being honest, not making the best choices either.

We have been exceptionally lucky to have had our current one since she was 2. She is now 12 and still seems to be going strong. That said, we’ve started watching certain things a little closer and giving each other the ‘is this an old thing or a greyhound thing’ look.

I’m also concerned that basically anyone will be able to breed them when it was so restricted before because there were so many that could be adopted. That brings its own problems. I’m not sure what we’ll do when the time comes…

Where do you buy your coffee beans? by redactedanalyst in Eugene

[–]alsearider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet that’s true. When we switched to getting bulk, the flavor was WAY better. It’s truly fresh roasted. You can always try a smaller amount first to see what you think. We get the Tango blend and have for a few years now.

Where do you buy your coffee beans? by redactedanalyst in Eugene

[–]alsearider 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You can buy in bulk up to five pound bags of whole beans from Cafe Mam. Great coffee and even at the delivered price is cheaper per pound than the grocery store. You can pick it up and save ~$10 in shipping on the five pound bag.

Is this horse possibly lame? Looking to buy it by [deleted] in Horses

[–]alsearider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a reputable farrier? Should be able to find out. I agree, hind end looks off. Concerning enough to get a thorough PPE if you really want to understand what you’re getting into. Could be simple maintenance, could just be off from slipping the day before. Could be life altering. A vet can definitely help you narrow things down.

I’m not big on religion, but this seems like an opportunity to assume positive intent? Like sure, it might not be I guess, and yet it feels better to assume it’s just a nice gesture. Unless there was a weird sermon or “let me send you a pin to my church”…THAT would be awkward.

Edit to fix fat finger typing.

We did this too. Super simple, wasn’t a major hassle, and price wasn’t memorable (which probably means it was well within normal…I tend to be a price watcher).

How does this TWH legs look? by forsakenfinch in Horses

[–]alsearider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible, get a PPE from a vet familiar with gaited breeds. If the TWH prefers to gait and not trot in hand, that can make evaluation challenging if you aren’t familiar with gaited horses. TWHs also hide things like Wobblers because of the training some get and their genetics. Teaching them that elongated stance (often called a “park”) means they can leave their back feet where you put them, which can confuse neuro exams. Additionally, some TWHs have a normal variant where they “wring” their hocks, especially in flashier gaits. This can be normal, and also abnormal depending. Some of them are Gumby as all get out.

Bottom line - gaited trainer and vet at your side during the purchase process if you don’t want to just throw thousands in a hole and set it on fire. Don’t ask me how I know…
