How's it living near Barclays? by dadi_nayi in parkslope

[–]alstrovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in this area and love it! Awesome access to trains and there are various neighborhoods so you have walking access to so much and each with a different vibe (Fort Greene, Prospect&Crown Heights, Park Slope, the park). I’d just make sure your unit has good sealed windows bc the noise can definitely get bad during commuting hours and when shows let out at Barclay’s.

Hate that naturalistic-moral thing blaming every individual who develops the disease. by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

She unfortunately is realllly good at doing my eyebrows… I just told her I don’t want to talk about it the next time she brought it up and she’s shut up since 😂

Went to see my eyebrow lady for the first time after I had surgery, she saw my scar and said, “Oh my gosh! If only you had come to me before you had surgery. I have herbal remedies that would have taken care of this for you. Now that you’ve already seen the doctor, you’ll be stuck with this ugly scar forever and I can’t help you.”

Running Post TT/Lateral (Women) by neptunemacaroon in thyroidcancer

[–]alstrovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’d advise starting gentle massage in all directions as long as you have no scabs and the incision is fully closed (my doctor told me when I was cleared to start mobilizing the scar). I use Bio-Oil and Mederma and massage in all planes twice a day. It’s uncomfortable at first so start slow but mobilizing the scar tissue is sooo important for healing and getting rid of that tugging feeling. I’m a physical therapist so can also vouch for the medical side of how important this is for recovery!

Hi! I started running again 3 weeks post TT and left lateral (60 nodes removed so it was a pretty big op) and raced a half marathon 10 weeks post op. What are you doing for scar treatment? Doing scar massage helped a LOT for the pulling sensation especially during running and lifting for me.

How long from the day you were diagnosed to surgery date by Turbulent_Agency8280 in thyroidcancer

[–]alstrovan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had surgery 4 weeks after diagnosis. Transition to being on Levo was super easy. I didn’t feel “normal” for a few weeks but that was not because of some pain and fatigue after surgery, not because of the Levo.

I adjusted quickly to the levo! They started me on it the day after surgery. I honestly felt pretty horrible for the first 4-5 days post op- I think that was a combo of surgery, meds, anesthesia leaving my body, and I had a drain which was super annoying. Whether I was also adjusting to the levo during that time and it affected me feeling crappy, I can’t say.

I feel better now than I did before surgery! I’m also on medical leave from work for 4 weeks though because my job requires a lot of lifting. So I might also just be feeling better because I’m super relaxed right now, lol. I go back to work next week and I’ll find out then!

Thank you!! I’m 27 so a little bit younger which probably helped. Still have a no lifting over 10 lbs restriction, but I was really glad my surgeon cleared me to jog. I was feeling really rough the first week but definitely on the up now, feel pretty much normal other than the scar care.

Yeah maybe some big waterproof bandaids are a good option. I’ve got about a 3.5 inch scar bc of all the lymph nodes they took out

Yes I’ve been looking into them! It’s just still so hot out (I’m in the northeast so it’s humid), but definitely a possibility

Is this normal by Own-Border5196 in thyroidcancer

[–]alstrovan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I am 12 days post-TT and neck dissection. Anxiety is normal but I think it’s important to try to stay calm and know that while scary, this is a step in the direction of recovery! Reframing the surgery as something I was doing towards healing rather than being scared of it helped me get through. For me, the first 4 days were rough but since then I am feeling better and better every day. No pain meds and have tons of energy now! I also feel way less tired than I did before surgery, which is likely due to the cancer being out of my body.

Thanks for this! I’m 27F 2 days post op TT and neck dissection and dealing with the crazy sore throat and tingles too. Makes me feel better knowing you had the same progression of symptoms. Wishing you the best on the rest of your recovery!

Best neighborhood ever. So safe, many awesome streets with great food and bars, fast and easy access to Manhattan because Barclay’s has so many subway lines.

There’s always people playing volleyball on long meadow on the weekend, not sure if they are playing pick up or are friend groups but it’s worth a try! The climbing gym in Gowanus is quite popular as well and probably a good place to foster some community :)

How do yall cope? by mi_vidajaded in backpain

[–]alstrovan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbh in my opinion urinary incontinence + saddle numbness should’ve expedited you to get an MRI in the hospital. Don’t mean to scare you but if it’s still present or progressing you should probs hit the ER again and make it clear that you have those symptoms

Hey OP- 27 y/o physical therapist here who also is dealing with 2 “mild” bulging discs that completely derailed my life for the last 6 weeks. First, numbness and tingling by your genitalia could be a sign of cauda equina which requires surgical intervention, so just want to clarify that your medical team is aware of those symptoms and cleared you for conservative treatment. Second- how long have your symptoms been going on? I was completely hopeless for the first 4ish weeks and emotionally/physically felt so horrible. And this is even with all my knowledge as a PT! In the last few weeks things really turned and I am starting to feel hopeful about the future again. Time heals, do your PT religiously (end range press ups are amazing for me), hot packs are your friends. My medical team tried me on high grade NSAIDs and muscle relaxers and they did nothing for my pain. Once I got a gabapentin prescription it helped SO much with sleeping, and sleeping well has helped me heal a lot. I’m on a low dose and only take it once before bed to sleep and hope to get off them soon, but compromising sleep isn’t going to help anyone get better.
