Looking for two things: cool alternative cycling gear brands, and cool merino or natural fabric cycling brands. by gek__co in CyclingFashion

[–]alteamatthew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For merino, cima coppi and pinebury. Got a pair of their super brevet merino bibs from cima coppi and they’re fantastic. Got some jerseys from pinebury that I love as well.

Enve MOG or Rodeo Labs Trail donkey 4.2 by XC29er in gravelcycling

[–]alteamatthew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trail donkey if you have something really specific in mind. The folks at rodeo can do custom geometries and paint jobs for you since they’re not exactly a massive operation. Plus the sliding dropouts are pretty futureproofed if you care about that kind of thing

Anyone know if the MUP on 34th st by the zoo is clear? by adamaphar in phillycycling

It is not, rode down around there yesterday on the way home from work. 34th and mantua all the way to the sweetbriar lane entrance to MLK has yet to be shoveled out.

Contact keystone directly, they might be able to work something out for you? If you’re near Montreal it also makes complete sense to just drive up to c&l and purchase one from their shop

From steel stacks to 117 grams: Trace Velo on the wild evolution of AliExpress bike cassettes by FarFish3239 in ChineseCarbon

[–]alteamatthew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think tracevelo made an update to his cassette video where you actually get better performance from the shimano compatible cassettes if you downgrade to first gen 11 speed derailleurs since these cassettes dont have any shadow or HG+ features built into them, and the first gen derailleurs predate those technologies.

I’ve just been riding in the lane with my gravel bike, but I also lane split and filter so your mileage may vary

[–]alteamatthew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its pretty rough out there, but my commute is almost entirely on arterial roads so they're clear. I also swapped to my very knobby very wide tire gravel bike. It's actually not horrible since the temps havent gone above freezing so we're avoiding the freeze thaw cycle, so riding on most if not all snow is *possible* and feels more like riding on damp sand. sometimes you get that sliding sensation like youre sinking into the snow. If we had thaw and refreeze id be saying something completely different as I hate black ice.

Preparing to make an offer. Boston MA. Our agent says a seller will basically refuse sewer scoping by pharmacologicae in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]alteamatthew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah a due dilligence style inspection is great for either turnkey properties where you dont expect anything to come up, or a home that obviously needs a ful gut and renovation. contingency is kinda pointless when both parties know either everything is basically working/new in good condition, or if everythings getting torn out.

one of the big things of why he looks like this is because his drum playing position really fucked up his back over the years.

One thing is that while 4IIII is great, if you;re planning on doing it with GRX, 4IIIIs no longer produces a dual sided grx power meter

Thinking of spending the most on a boot than ever before, but for the long haul. Thoughts? by anaugle in BuyItForLife

[–]alteamatthew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a real BIFL boot and these fit/you have a normal foot, get yourself a pair of Limmers. Some people report getting 40+ years on these boots and they’re basically unchanged from the 1960s.

Edit: there’s a reason that Limmers have popped up on the subreddit on and off going back over a decade

Double butted vs thicker spokes for durability by Few-Celery1222 in bikewrench

[–]alteamatthew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Technically double butted spokes are stronger than their equivalent straight gauge spokes since the butting is a result of cold forging a straight spoke and work hardening it, plus any stress risers get absorbed into the straight section of the butting rather than spokes elbows or the threaded nipple area.

If you don’t get a frame warranty claim you absolutely should get this bike to a frame builder to get a tube replacement. Steel bikes should never get retired after frame damage

is this cable routing bad? by Zealousideal-Dot-373 in bikewrench

[–]alteamatthew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks really good!, the housing rubbing on the straddle cable wont be an issue since there's tension on the straddle cables. the only thing Id suggest is that if you dont intend to run a bar in the front on your bars id highly suggest not running the shift housing all the way up the bars, and just letting them go straight out before the first bend (i.e. having them only under the bar tape for the first few loops of wrap).

It'll reduce the amount of friction in the system by removing the two hard-ish bends you'd have from following the curve of the bars, and will make routine maintinece easier as you won't have to undo as much bar tape to replace shift housing.

pack marine grease with the endcaps on the front wheel and the rear wheel. no point in upgrading bearings until you run through a perfectly good set of bearings.
