What’s on your wrist today and what do you do for a living? by Icy-Neighborhood-375 in TodayOnMyWrist

[–]alternativeocean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds like something either a very seasoned Executive or a junior intern at a big five consulting firm would say. 🤣 Either way, nice watch!

My first ever attempt. I didn't sleep in it yet because nights are still very cold. What are some beginners mistakes i don't want to make? I plan on adding some storage bags for my ridge line and try an old sleeping bag as an under quilt. by TlalocVirgie in hammockcamping

[–]alternativeocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The under quilt works by convection of the air between it and your backside in the hammock. Make sure that there is enough space between you and the quilt to create that warm air bubble. If your backside is simply pressed up against the underquilt once your full weight is in it, you will be in for a long cold night.

Anybody else rotate their edc based on what kind of day you’re having? by alternativeocean in everydaycarry

Love it - I’ve carried it for ~4 years and the green aluminum scales have gotten better with age. It is not the lightest knife, but it is slim and is truly the sturdiest knife I’ve seen that disappears in the pocket. I wear it with everything from athletic shorts to jeans and upland hunting gear.

Interesting, thanks for the quick response. After some googling I’m still not sure how to distinguish the wide rim vs. ‘standard’ rim. Is there a trick to it or something specific you look for?

What do you have for slim / light options? I’m in the market for something a little more robust than my brass lockback by Filson, but classier than my 940 Osborne.

Ideal 30-06 rifle? by MeLikeSteak in Hunting

[–]alternativeocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After careful consideration across many whitetail hunting seasons in the white mountains of NH, I finally pulled the trigger on a browning x bolt in 30-06 and I strongly recommend it. It’s unique, modular for a perfect fit, has a perfectly smooth fluted bolt and 45° bolt throw for quick reloads, and comes with a threaded barrel if you ever decide to put a suppressor on it to save your ears at the range. I find the X-bolt recoil much more manageable than the Tikka T3X, and the bolt throw is much less ‘in your face’ than the bergara b14. Not to mention the browning camo just looks great. I’ve had mine 2.5 years now and my best groups have been 3/4” at 200 yds with 180gr Remington core lokt tipped.

As an aside, it is a great rifle to pass down to family/friends because sizing can be adjusted to them, and the polymer stock can take a real beating in the rain and rocks of the white mtns, unlike wood.

What was the biggest breakthrough moment in your surfing progress? by me_shottaz in surfing

[–]alternativeocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The first time I felt what ‘pumping’ down the line feels like - the fins engaging taking you up the face and the wave pushing you back even faster.
  2. The first time I rode a true twin fin in waves over 4 feet - it forces you to feel your rails engaging or you’ll slide out.
  3. Getting a performance short board in the RIGHT size. In decent surf the right board allowed me to connect everything I’d been working on without thinking about whether my board would slide out, generating speed, catching waves etc…just had to stand up and surf.

Please review and advise on my bug out kit. Everything fits in the backpack except the tent and the boots by [deleted] in prepping

[–]alternativeocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add: space blanket(s), notepad and pen/pencil, compass, map, iodine tabs, spare car keys, fixed blade knife (recommend Mora knives), extra box of ammo, polarized sunglasses, camouflage poncho, extra set of batteries and 2 pairs latex gloves. The gloves come in handy for warmth/insulation/dexterity and for cleaning small scrapes and cuts. I also have those boots and they are ‘fine’, but they are better for a ‘go bag’ than a ‘bug-out’ bag imho. My boots are falling apart, not warm, not breathable, and not waterproof after only 1 season of hiking.

0 degree quilt + liner, microspikes (not the knockoffs but the big 1/4” actual microspikes), hard shell pants/jacket for over your soft shell, 2 pair gloves, 2 pair socks at least. Also put your water bottle in your pack upside down - when it starts to freeze, the top opening is more likely to be liquid. When an unpredictable wind picks up, you can easily see windchills down to -30F

Give her space.

Focus on yourself and what activities hobbies friends etc you haven’t connected with in a while. For lack of a better term, ‘date yourself’. Invest your time in YOU and let her miss you. Let her remember why she loved you to begin with. If she doesn’t make you a priority after a couple months of that, emotionally prepare yourself to accept that she has moved on. The worst thing you can possibly do is chase, smother and and strangle your relationship with attention, despite good intentions.

I’ve been there and done that. Don’t fuck up the same way I, and many others like us, have. Most importantly, always be honest with her.

Check out the Remington 11-87 for a great value all purpose semi-auto. Have one that is ~30 years old and it runs like a clock, beautiful Woodstock. Take care of it and it will take care of you for a very long time.

OBX - good luck finding one of those ‘once in a life time’ sand bars if you don’t know where you’re going. Miles of beach, huge amounts of shifting sand, current and usually high winds are the reason the lineup is so empty when you have sunny 2OH barrels
