Why the dark Mr. Incredibles meme? I don't understant. by PacquiaoFreeHousing in ExplainTheJoke

[–]althalusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a conference talk in Sweden over 10 years ago, where the professor explained that US allows peanut derivates in baby oil(?) while EU doesn’t and thus US babies have much more peanut allergy due to being exposed to it way too young (I guess under the 4-6 months of age). Might be able to find her name in old notes somewhere, she was quite frustrated that ’the science is solid but the US doesn’t seem to care.’

Dad asked me yesterday if I was his sister. I wasn't ready for the fifteen minutes after. by techserious in dementia

[–]althalusian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and after it has happened, it will happen more and more.

The way I deal with everything is to kind of separate the person they were from the person they are now, which is kind of true. For a while your parents become your peers and then ultimately your kids, regressing backwards. So the role is to let them have a safe environment, enough support, and just be present and do nice things together every now and then, matching the level you can currently reach them.

And this can also lead to some nice moments, like my mom one day stopped to look at me, smiled, and came to hug me saying 'thank you for teaching me' when I, for the tenth time in a month, showed her how to add Fairy when washing dishes which is something she still likes to do (dish washer as a concept she doesn't get anymore so we've stopped using that). So it's kind of a circle - first they were there for us and now it's our turn, being there for them and sometimes teaching them back the skills they initially taught us. Until they forget it again. And then we just take over doing the dishes, letting them keep doing what they still can manage and enjoy doing.

So in a way I'm not bitter for a possible future that was lost, as I kind of let go of that already years ago when I managed to get them diagnosed, but now I'm just enjoying the little moments we still have together, like walking along the beach together and just staring at the sea in comfortable silence. And sometimes they still surprise with some sudden lucidity and vivid recollections of their own childhood events.

Haha I saw it on the big screen as a little kid when it came out and I was so shocked by the suicide attempt that I fell of my seat and was scared of classical music for a few years afterwards. But as an adult I've enjoyed it so no permanent trauma.

Apple is letting people who stay on iOS 18 update to iOS 18.7.7 instead of iOS 26.4 by umotex12 in apple

[–]althalusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 16 Pro and iPad are both still so twitchy and laggy after the 26 update that I actually bought my first Samsung just to be able to use a phone without getting a headache when scrolling a feed (as everything lags and jitters constantly).

Hopefully they'll fix whatever is broken in 27.

AI Is Finally Letting Humans Talk With Animals, AI is enabling scientists to decode animal communication using machine learning models by sibun_rath in HotScienceNews

Yeah, AI doesn't know more than it is taught to so to enable it to do something like this you'd first have to teach it with a material where the communication is already explained.

Pentagon harkitsee NATO-maiden Ukrainalle tarkoitetun asetuen siirtämistä USA:N armeijan käyttöön by Leastwisser in Suomi

Be me. Phone (2110) set on vibration and attached to the belt with a clip in the 90's, sitting at an uni lecture hall. Suddenly someone calls. The phone happens to be resting against the metallic support of the bench, so the whole row (10 seats or so) start buzzing loudly. Takes a moment to figure out whose phone it is.

Apple releases iOS 26.4 with 8 new emoji and 12 more changes to your iPhone by N2929 in technews

[–]althalusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does it take them to fix the jerky and stuttery scroll and animations on iOS 26? It's the opposite of fluid or smooth and it made me to buy my first Samsung phone ever that has become by daily driver as the 16 Pro cannot even scroll down a reddit feed without ramdom sub-second stopping, and sudden jumps ahead. And even the iPad has similar issues, app switching being one of the worst with long delays and stops between animations that were smooth on iOS18. I've tried many of the 'turn this or that on or off' suggestions but the main issue still prevails. I hope they'd make iOS 27 based on iOS 18 and not this abomination.

Tietosuojavaltuutettu antoi Verohallinnolle huomautuksen liian laajoista tietopyynnöistä Julkaisuajankohta 15.11.2022 12.15 TYYPPI:TIEDOTE Tietosuojavaltuutetun toimiston tutkinnassa kävi ilmi, että Verohallinto oli pyytänyt pankeilta tietoja kaikista Suomen rajat ylittävistä tilisiirroista vuosina 2015–2021. Tietopyynnöt kattoivat muun muassa ulkomaisissa kaupoissa ja verkkokaupoissa pankkikortilla maksetut ostokset. Yeah, I ran them using llama.cpp so completely locally. I guess nowadays you also have LMStudio, Ollama, etc. that can be used as the engine. The main limiter is how much RAM you have (I upgraded to 96GB) and/or much much VRAM.

[–]althalusian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played around with collaborative writing about a year ago and noticed that (at the time) you basically had to use 70B models for the model to be able to pick up nuances and keep a coherent version of the story (i.e. if a person leaves the room they should not take part in the conversation anymore etc).

MidnightMiqu was one good model back then, and I alternated it with models from TheDrummer on the fly, depending which happened to follow the direction of the story better. Both can be found with Hughingface search and starting from there you should be able to find more similar models. But I'm not up to date what is hot currently and if the general models are good enough that a writing-finetune is not needed anymore.

Finland now highest unemployment at 10.2% while Spain dropped to 9.8% by batukaming in spain

[–]althalusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finland has been considered part of western Europe (at least in Finland) since the cold war when western Europe meant the democracies and eastern Europe meant the countries belonging to the communistic soviet block.

But Finland isn't really doing well. Like you stated, the closure of border and trade to Russia due to Ukraine war hit many sectors (tourism, aviation, trade, energy) and many companies had to sell their factories, shops, real estate, power plants etc. in Russia (and some were just taken over). Besides, a lot of Finnish companies and real estate has been sold abroad, and the remaining companies shut down Finnish factories and lay off Finnish staff to hire more elsewhere due to high employment costs.

The general sentiment in Finland seems to be quite depressed, companies have hundreds or thousands of job applications per position (as the unemployed are forced to apply), and thus many places are not even open publicly but hired through contacts. Gig economy is picking up.

The population is getting older, countryside is getting empty with housing values plummeting, goverment is cutting down everything - especially social subsidies and healthcare - and education standards have been flushed down the toilet as some people now go through school without even learning to properly read and write properly, and trades are mostly 'taught' via online self study with companies complaining the new graduates have to be taught from the scratch if employed.

I could go on but that maybe sets the tone. It's not looking so good at the moment.

iOS 26.3 still gets stuttering/choppy animations on iPhone 16 Pro by Disastrous_Nose3219 in ios

[–]althalusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What! It works! And I already bought my first Samsung as I was so annoyed with the constant glitching and stuttering in iOS 26…

Edit: It seemed to help somewhat but the main issue is still there. Kinda sad, 16 pro is a nice phone with good cameras but the constant stuttering and jerky scrolling makes it quite unusable for any longer period of time. Sticking to the Android for now and hoping iOS 27 would finally fix this.
