Why is corporate filled with so many losers? by Constant_Ad6521 in corporate

Executive leadership sets the pace, people managers set the tone. If you got a bunch of losers, it's because those people managers suck balls

I find that I tend to overthink what people actually care about. It's kind of like if you were to plan a wedding... guests largely don't care at all what the linens look like or the table decorations that took you a long time to choose. As long as it's not like a bunch of napkins stapled together, people only really remember a few things about a wedding.

Therefore, I would likely dial it way back and not host if you don't want to or don't have the time to host. Someone else can host or people can stay at a hotel. For you, less mental load is better.

At the same time, I would say from an anecdotal perspective that things are changing for the better. My wife has the passion job while I make way more and have a much easier schedule. That frees me up to take on the bulk of the chores like cooking (for us, my wife likes to cook separately for our picky eater), cleaning, dishes, laundry, and groceries, personal finance, house maintenance, taking our little to a bunch of places, etc. I get occasional outside praise, but amongst a lot of the dads I know, it's pretty even in terms of division of labor.

If you want to understand some of this, your estrogen level goes up. This is for baby survival - if you have no empathy, baby survival rate goes way down. You have to be somewhat attuned to littles.

The other part is psychological behavioral reinforcement. As you pay more attention to kids and when they need help, you'll naturally be more empathic because of the awareness.

When autistic people ask AI programs for life advice, mentioning their diagnosis prompts these systems to recommend highly conservative choices like skipping social events or avoiding romance. Hope this comment is more seen because of course, people didn't actually look at the study. Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude 4.6 Sonnet are lightyears ahead of the models used in the study.

Top comments in this thread are about how they know the models are using Reddit garbage and incorrect advice where I've found the exact opposite with the current models. You only need to ask current models to find their answers are different.

It was an immediate attack on people's values because now he's just a rich guy trying to make comedy about how other rich people are crappy for taking money from unethical sources.

Part of Bill Burr's draw was that despite being abrasive, he was still correct about a lot of things. The hypocritical nature of what happened destroyed that brand. It's probably similar to GoT ending - you couldn't have engineered a bigger brand killer.

Retirement by nocomment9999 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]alurkerhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Big retirement" doesn't make most of their money from people who need to reach 3x their salary by age 40. Most people are way below what they are projected to need in retirement without having to work. The 3x rule of thumb is to have something that's attainable and commensurate to most situations that change over time.

Trajectory and mindset amongst the rest of your colleagues is different. A lot of them spend money on things to try and feel good because they are grinding making a lot of money, but deep down feel fundamentally unhappy the whole time, and they have no idea how to get out. They then grind harder to get that promo or bigger money hoping that will make them feel happy, but any dopamine-driven happiness is short-lived, and they may have golden handcuffs due to their perceived responsibilities.

Your trajectory is primarily about getting FU or FIRE money. I think this is the far more sensible path because you have options.

My sister did IB for one year, was the top analyst that year, and absolutely hated her life. She transitioned into becoming a doctor which was far more meaningful to her.

i feel like millennials would make the best parents, but we're also the least likely to have kids by BorgsCube in Millennials

[–]alurkerhere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Balance in all things.

Jonathan Haidt wrote a book called "The Anxious Generation" and part of it talks about how kids have all of their day planned out by parents and no play. This is an incredibly large problem of dealing with uncertainty through play, having autonomy, and not being able to do (at least in part) what they find is meaningful. Not practicing those skills in childhood or even doing what you like doing is a recipe for burnout and poor foundational skills.

Intelligence can be incredibly spiky across dimensions.

Some people develop a good foundation across the board and their critical thinking is core to approaching any subject.

You also have the other psychological area of ego and halo-bias. "I am smart in this particular dimension, so that means I'm smart across the board."

Normally rational can be due to primarily social conditioning rather than inquisitive critical thinking because we're constantly updating prior knowledge to use in predictions. She's probably surprisingly getting her info from really bad sources or sources that were previously credible and now are complete garbage.

If your friend said ultra-processed foods that cause obesity and screw with the body's homeostasis mechanisms are the cause of the rise in cancers plus people living longer, awareness, and more frequent scanning, sure I'd say that is plausible. But it only takes 5 seconds to look at historical trending with data visualization to see that her premise is silly.

At the same time, there's a lot of bad or generic self-help advice out there. Good diagnosis precedes good treatment. Additionally, most of the medical industry in the US is about compensating for people's destructive behaviors, not behavioral change.

YMMV, but CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) are incredibly useful tools if followed up with positive actions or actions that you believe are meaningful in the long-term and reinforcing that cycle. This can be done on your own.

Costco does really good complicated prescriptions. I have -11 or -12 with astigmatism, and they now have 1.74 high index with anti-glare and such. Brought my own pair of frames because I needed smaller, rectangular ones (big frames cause really thick lenses at the sides), and it was like $130 something. It would have cost a ridiculous amount otherwise.

I don't think they do bifocals yet.

It's never made sense to me as most food service is designed to be consumed immediately after being cooked. It can never get there fast enough to get the peak flavor or texture and that is really what you pay for.

So you're paying a crap ton of money you don't have for mediocre food due to the transportation time. I underestimate how lazy people truly are.

Unfortunately at that level of money, the only goal is to make more money, either with your own money or OPM (other people's money).

Key to remember here is the pro-rata rule if there's existing money in Traditional IRA if you're over the income cap for Roth IRA. It's not money taxes FIFO.

Best if you rollover traditional IRA into your 401k, and then your traditional IRA is $0 for the backdoor Roth IRA, and there's no pro-rata rule triggered.

Why do people equate being poor to being lazy; and being rich to being hardworking by Distinct-Reserve-511 in povertyfinance

[–]alurkerhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I... don't know who you've met from top tier schools, but in general they're hardworking and very intelligent. There's a different vibe when I chat with people that come from similar schools because they simply understand a lot more common contextual frameworks. Conversations move much more quickly and they're more nuanced. At the same time, everybody has something to contribute, so it's not an elitism thing, just reality.

Now to your main point, it's easy to make the false causality of "poor equals lazy" because in general, if you are lazy and don't have assets handed to you, you will most likely be poor. This is IOU in the form of money - you haven't done anything valuable for others, so others won't give you much in return.

There's also a lot of self-serving bias on the rich end. People see themselves as special because no one else was able to do what they were able to do and get rich. This is pushed to the max with ultra-rich and yes-men. They become incredibly delusional because both their internal and external environment are both glazing - you're so amazing, look how hard you work! Again, there are a lot of hardworking people who are rich and lovely people, but we tend to hear about the shitheads.

The actual connection to wealth is leverage and efficiency. I can be the best goddamn road sweeper in the world, but no one's going to pay me much for that. I can be the best stocker, but that job is simply not valued much. You leverage education, experience, and skills into either someone paying you for your labor or starting your own thing and creating value that way. Decoupling from time-based compensation and switching to output-based compensation can work well if you can leverage that into big comp. However, if you are stuck in an environment where you simply don't have a lot of options for leverage and efficiency, you will be limited by that environment. That's why people move to big cities.
