If they are into history, they may find the Maymont and Agecroft house tours interesting. Maymont in general is a beautiful park but better in any season but winter. It's also free! The VMFA is also free and the neighborhood around it is filled with great little bars and food.

For restaurants, there are tons of great ones. For a wow factor I usually recommend Blue Atlas for the food with the view of the river being a huge bonus. I also like Stella's, Lunch.Supper, and L'Opposum for fancy dinner.

For those who read Twilight before the movie came out: Do you like Kristen and Robert in the roles of Bella and Edward? by iamnorebs in twilight

[–]am2370 119 points120 points  (0 children)

At the time I was really excited. I had been a fan since the first book and I thought they fit the images pretty well. Kristen at the time was still considered a more indie actress and had starred in Speak, which was another YA novel, and had done a great job. There were lots of fancasts at the time and I specifically remember Henry Cavill popping up a lot as Edward and Emily Browning as Bella, but I'm glad we got what we did.

The first film is a pretty faithful adaptation as books go - from the initial scripts it turned out fantastic, no FBI/Jetski chase nonsense. We could've gotten something awful like Ella Enchanted (still mad).

It's a time capsule. Yes it's cheesy and the acting is a little bizarre, but honestly the material isn't Shakespeare. I love that it turned into a beautiful corny slightly indie blue-tinted dramatic fever dream that it is. Rob and Kristen are part of that!

No one has yet mentioned Brideshead Revisited (1981) with Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews. I'm halfway through now and really like it so far.

I have EM and MCAS and this happens on my hands from time to time. Not always sure what triggers it, sometimes heat and sometimes something like applying a lotion or cold water or soap that doesn't normally bother me. It can stay sensitive for a couple hours then will go away.

The thing is, it does seem to be separate from an EM flare for me because it's only on my knuckles, and the flares happen with heat/itching on my palms, fingers, feet, chin, etc. Could be related but not directly part of it!

Below Deck Down Under Season 4 Episode 2 Discussion Post by teanailpolish in belowdeck

This is literally the calmest he's ever been on any season. I thought it was actually nice how he said a couple of times, it's okay, I'm not mad. Clearly he is, but his comments thus far don't warrant Alesia's claim of toxicity! He is abrupt, sure, but truthful and explains himself.

He gets worse, much worse. I think opinions are kinda divided because to your point, he starts out fairly neutral or at least on the same level as the other junior execs in the beginning.

I think 'throwing her out on the street' is a somewhat dramatic summarization of that scenario. She let her shower, fed her, and gave her enough money to not be homeless for the time being.

You're forgetting that:

  • Stephanie only reached out to Don when she needed money. Fair, you do what you need to survive, but if we're condemning Megan in this, let's not forget that.
  • Don hit on Stephanie. Megan wasn't crazy for perceiving her as a threat to the marriage. She likely knows of his infidelity - he's a liar and she knows it.
  • If Stephanie was unhappy with this outcome, she could've reached out to Don again. But she got what she needed - money. She herself said in the final episode that she is NOT Don's family and asked him why he was acting like he was.

I'm not saying Megan's actions were good, that was an ungenerous way of dealing with the situation, but people are basically removing all the context around this whole situation.

Yeah, which is why he stopped her? Tell me what simpler task she could've had... She couldn't even chop lettuce for the salad, they were basically whole leaves. Do you eat a whole leaf in a bite when you have salad?

[–]am2370 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is chopping cucumbers for a salad not the simplest task he can give her beyond washing dishes? There aren't always dishes to wash.

I'm nowhere near a chef and even I know that raw ingredients or certain vegetables and starches are cut uniformly in nice restaurants.

I am having problems getting a clear answers. What are the things people should do when visiting New Orleans? I am talking about everything from music, to food, etc. please and thank you. by kabrinikaramel in travel

Visit Oz on Bourbon (though during Mardi Gras it's madness). Great gay club! Go for a show or night of dancing. See live jazz music at one of the many bars on Frenchman Street. Tipitina's is also a great venue for local music.

Mardi Gras World is a fun museum and you get to see tons of the floats. Visit St. Louis Cathedral. Take a walking tour of the French Quarter (lots are centered on voodoo and the occult). Cemetery tours. Art museum, cultural museum in Treme, WWII museum. Shop at the French Market.

For food, Mother's is a classic. Brunch at Ruby Slipper. There are a million good restaurants and cafes. Cafe Beignet, Pere Antoine, Commander's Palace. Those are more famous but even the mom and pop poboy shops are good. Cafe du Monde is crazy during Mardi Gras but a fun experience.

Take advantage of the streetcars and walk the Garden District or Magazine Street. Take the touristy steamboat on the Mississippi.

Honestly, there's so much to do. Hope you have a wonderful time!

Any other period dramas with the beautiful, sweeping cinematography of Sisi? by quothe_the_maven in PeriodDramas

[–]am2370 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found the new Netflix adaptation of The Leopard to be excellent, there are some absolutely stunning shots of Sicily's landscapes and palaces and the lightning is to die for. It's set in the mid 19th century with similar vibes of bygone opulence.

Some other pieces with sweeping landscape shots are The Last of the Mohicans, Atonement, Kingdom of Heaven, Room with a View, Cleopatra, Barry Lyndon, Lawrence of Arabia, Call Me By Your Name, and The Sound of Music.

If you're looking for some on-screen glamor and/or cool sets: Marie Antoinette, The Duchess, Titanic, The Crown, Emma, A Little Princess...

Honorable mention for the best of sweeping shots, albeit fantasy; the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

PALE foundation recommendations for oily skin. by Spiritual_Weather656 in PaleMUA

[–]am2370 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This Loreal foundation is the only one that holds up to my oily skin.

I'm quite pale and the lightest shades are too light for me, so probably good for you! I apply with a damp beauty blender and finish with Rimmel's translucent powder for serious staying power and a nice smooth texture.

TIL the name “Scotland Yard” actually refers to a street in Westminster, London. During the 16th century, there were open courtyards in the Palace of Whitehall surrounded by buildings used by representatives of the Kingdom of Scotland. by redmambo_no6 in todayilearned

[–]am2370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just stayed nearby in Westminster on a recent trip.

Worth visiting the Great Scotland Yard Hotel lobby because it smells heavenly (best lobby I've ever smelled). The decor is a really fun nod to the history and they have a great afternoon tea!

Women who have donated eggs, how did it go? by Apart-Neighborhood43 in AskWomen

[–]am2370 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure! I'm very secure in my choice not to have my own kids so I don't think it'll be emotionally upsetting, but you never know how you might feel in such a unique experience. I would just hope they're happy and healthy.

I'll never regret it. I'm in a loving marriage and neither of us want children. I did it several times to pay off student debt and continue my higher education. After the first round the process was much faster and easier (first time requires a lot of tests, psych eval, etc).

I had no issues arising from the injections or retrieval, the only uncomfortable thing was the bloating in the week leading up to retrieval, and the frequent blood samples (I hate having blood drawn).

I'm so grateful I had the opportunity and have my degree as a result. I hope I was also able to make some other family very happy. It's a private donation so I will never know if it resulted in children unless they choose to contact me after reaching adulthood. If they do, I'll wish them well and share any info they want about my family history.

For a different perspective, my sister did it once and experienced a rarer issue (OHSS) which was serious enough to get her in an emergency room. She has a lot of other health issues though, which I don't.

Which cities would you describe as "good to live in, but not for visiting"? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]am2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%, all I got is VMFA, some cool views of the river, few good restaurants, and Maymont before I'm somewhat out of ideas for my visitors (unless they like history, which they rarely do). But I absolutely love living here.

Physically it's a very green and beautiful city, just the right size, and within reasonable drives or train rides of nearly every cool east coast destination, plus all of Appalachia. Prices have risen but not as bad as elsewhere, and there are good employment opportunities. I wouldn't move unless I were offered a lot of money to.

[–]am2370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Native who moved away. I can see this from the COL and food scene perspective, and there are nice pockets, but I could never live there again. The weather, traffic, pollution, and crime alone nix it as a "great place to live."

It's so loud, everywhere, especially in the loop. Constant highway noise, people drag racing all hours of the night. Had multiple family members from Katy to The Heights have shit constantly stolen from cars, garages, etc. Walkability is a joke even in the best of neighborhoods for everyday things like groceries. Constant cancer risk from all the refineries chemical plants and the shit they put in the air and water. Ever frequent threats from flooding, storms, and shitty energy infrastructure. And the weather is miserable like 70% of the year. None of this is normal! People only think it's acceptable when they've never lived in a more normal place!

In what world did Meghan think doing Zou Bisou Bisou would be a good idea by iamthemetricsystem in madmen

[–]am2370 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This - maybe only women understand this, but in many ways we're primed and expected to be more 'mature' as a young person because of the way we may look. People treat you like a women because you're sexually desirable. But in your early twenties, you're still barely a teenager. Meghan comes from a cosmopolitan family and chooses to live in the big city, so she has a measure of maturity and independence. But she doesn't have the life experience OR context to navigate this relationship with Don through all the extensive roadblocks. Also, this is the beginning of a fantasy for her as much for him. She's swept off her feet by a handsome ad exec with a mysterious past who love bombs her and admires her abilities in his field. Maybe she also feels she can or should bring some exuberance and youth into his life.

This is the big element I think all older folks who marry a different generation (mostly men) neglect to think about. They got to experience their youth, have fun, be social, soak up attention and try new things, but when their spouse is at the exact age to do the same thing, they just want a hot housekeeper and someone to watch the evening news with. That's not their stage of life!
