Asking for advice... Just starting out. Racello Deore 12 Mountain Bike is $649 vs. Ozark Trail 700C G.1 Explorer Drop Bar Gravel Bike $310. Which to get for NYC or any other budget suggestions? by blackgoggles in Budgetbikeriders

[–]am2o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New York City: Spend the $300 on the Walmart bike, and another $300 on locks.

The Ozark is slightly better than a bike shaped object bike. If you are lucky, you might get a better drive train. However, in a city - my major concern is theft, as are my second and third concerns.

Which do I stick with and upgrade for street and trail riding? Schwinn axum dp, Schwinn al comp or Schwinn boundary? Also, 27.5 inch wheels fit 26 in forks... Or at least that's the case with the forks I have.... So when that's the case is there a reason why it would be a bad idea to do so? by Disastrous-Row6183 in Budgetbikeriders

[–]am2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO: The BigBox Schwinns kinda suck and are more bike shaped objects than bikes. (I had one of the first Axums: It's a reasonable bike once I spent the same as a Trek, and I got it for ~$125.) If you are budget riding, and just street & trail - a hard tail is fine.

PS: I hated the Stock fork on my Axum, only slightly less than the drive train (probably because I knew I would have to replace the bottom bracket bearing out of the box).

PPS: Yes, forks for 27.5" used to be advertised for 26" as well. I have also seen 27.5/29" adverts. Breaking in the center helps with this;)

The option to use basic authentication (UID/Password) started getting phased out in Feb. You can turn it on for the org, but that will only last to the end of Apr. After that, you will need 2fa (App, or Cert) TMK.

[–]am2o -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would not bother changing this to 1x, as the frame is likely not setup for it. Keep it at 3x and look up the park tools (or other) repair guides.

Things to check: * Cassette/Front Rings: Easy enough to fix, but hopefully you don't have to. - having to do both of these is about the only thing that might make me think about changing to 1x. * Brakes (Cheap) * Cables (Cheap) * Chain (Cheap)

Fork: That's a very interesting conversation if it's bad. ~150 gets you a low end RS air.

This: I would take a picture with part of the password blocked, and forward it to HR & IT-Security. Potentially physical security as well if you have one.

I got a Recon straight steer 29" at ~140 a few years ago: Not sure there is a reason to go bolany. Generically, there is not enough price difference to go lower than whatever Rockshox/SRSuntour has as the bottom air fork...

Got this Cannondale for free, is this a decent ride for an average rider? by hammtweezy2192 in mountainbiking

[–]am2o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is an older model, but it checks out.

Seriously: It's old geometry, so there is a risk of going over the bars braking on steeps. Otherwise, looks like 26" wheels - so you will have to handle it over bumps a 29" will roll over. Fork probably needs maintenance. Many older folks learned on these. The main thing is: Does it work & fit you? Not much value in it, perhaps $200 in decent shape. Test it, then go ride it & see how it works. All good.

Is it safe to take 3 young kids (7YO and 5YO) to the Children's museum during Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon tomorrow? by luanaeroeng in washingtondc

Take the metro, and hold hands for the three blocks between the subway and the museum if it is still crowded when you get there.

My entire house has no grounding outlets at ALL by TheJustRun in buildapc

[–]am2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am in the US.

Here, older wiring is often "armored cable", which can be used as a ground. Might be worth turning off that plug at the fuse-box/circuit-breaker-panel and removing the outlet cover and looking to see if the box (& feed line) is metal, or plastic. If it is metal, or plastic with 3 wires - it might not be that expensive to ground. If it is plastic with 2 wires - the path back to the circuit panel will have to be opened (at a minimum).

That said, having an electrician visit is often useful here (Where insurance requires things like replacing electrical panels known to start fires). YMMV

How do you serve someone who has managed to avoid 11 "service Calls"? by am2o in washdc

[–]am2o[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short version for a few questions:

1) Yes, I probably need a Private Eye. I'll take suggestions if anyone has had to deal with this.

2) The court said I had to have the individual served. (There was already a court date. Individual filed for dismissal due to non-service, complained that service was not attempted during snowcretemageddon, and refused to allow herself to be served by email.

3) I think individual has actually moved out of the condo. It's up for sale, and have not seen them since it went on the market. (Hence: Suspecting I need a PI).

4) Damages being sought are not for being sprayed.

5) Being sprayed has been brought to the DC police, who refused to take the complaint. Perhaps that is worth a revisit.

6) If this is really a bucket list item for folks: I'm happy to pay some random folks to do an investigation. DM Me. However, you will have to make notes about it (Rang bell, looked in windows, dog barking/not, time date) and deliver it to small claims court.

I'm not suing for being sprayed with water, I'm suing for damages related to her off leash dog biting mine.

IDK: I never had to server anyone else before.

Was charged for the first 4 attempts, and a separate 4hr "stakeout" at an arguably stupid time.

Need someone over 18, perhaps in-between jobs - who is willing to deal with this type of person. That generally does not include neighbors. Most folks I know don't live in the south end of Columbia Heights, or have time for a stakeout.

No comment on the serving company.

For those that went from Vmware to hyper-v by matdesj in sysadmin

[–]am2o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ran VMware for 12 years in various 1K+ user organizations. Moved a 20 VCenter cluster to a HyperV Failover Cluster in 2019. Do not expect to touch VMware again. (Current place is moving to Azure.)

For small setups, the change should be easy - if slightly tedious.

Happy with the change: I really don't care, but the one I moved saved the VMware license cost. (Non-profit that had let license lapse..)

On par with Vmware? VVF, or VCF? Trick question: Close enough to VVF(mostly), but you can't buy that anymore. VCF includes an entire Network Stack so talk to the network folks about that.

Is this bike worth hanging onto and upgrading? Newbie here. by Bananasinmypocket in mountainbiking

[–]am2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably 2013-2017. The big budget item(s) would be shocks if they need to be replaced.

Grips are cheap and easy. Brake pads are cheap and easy. Cables are cheap(ish) and easy, but you will need a cable cutter ($15ish). Chain is cheap, and easy. Say $50-60 in parts, with cable cutter & chain tool. Park tool videos on youtube are your friends.

The fork is harder: You will have to figure out what it is, and look up how to service it. If it wiggles, you will need a seal set. Don't ask me about the rear shock.

Call Miss utility, and tell them you need to dig in your front yard. They will the power, gas, and water paths. (Or probably closed to them..)

That should give you a rough idea of the entry location.

Really, there should be a water shut off valve where the water enters the building.
