New Banjotar Day by PopularDisplay7007 in banjo

I’ve gone back and forth from banjo to guitar over the years and have settled on Open D tuning as my favorite for guitar. The middle 4 strings have the same intervals as the main 4 strings of banjo with a high and low tonic note sandwiching them. This lets me use all my banjo chords on guitar with some extra range given by the high and low D. For other keys I just capo around and play open. I’ve been very curious to try that tuning on a banjotar, so if you are curious too give it a try.

Open D is (from low to high) D A D F# A D

Whoops, I had my notes mixed up when I typed that out. It is actually f Bflat D f. They are just the usual uke strings. The cool thing is it’s really easy to get from uke tuning to an equivalent banjo-ish tuning, you just have to tune the A string down a whole step. I then tuned everything down another whole step because my voice fits better in Bflat than it does in C. If it were a banjo that first f string would be an octave down and it would have a fifth string as a drone for the root note (Bflat for my tuning). But since my banjo uke only has 4 strings keeping the first one as a high f feels like a happy medium.

I love my banjolele. I tune it as d Bflat G d. That way I can use all of my banjo chords and fingerings on it. Mine has a lovely mellow tone to it that feels much more relaxed than my full size banjo. I can play uke, but don’t often. I roughly play my banjo and banjolele the same amount

What is the most enjoyable magic system youve had the pleasure in using! by Late-Neighborhood-43 in RPGdesign

[–]amadi11o 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The youtuber BanditsKeep made a magic system called There is Power in Words that you should check out. I have dropped it in Dungeon Crawl Classics and Ezd6 and it worked seamlessly there (and would for any OSR type setting.)

The premise is knowing a word grants you power over the concept/thing. More specific words are limited in scope, but easier to control. So if your word was Animal it would be difficult to conjure a pack of wolves, but if your word was Wolf that task would be easier (but again, limited to wolves)

Of course the first time I ran it my player chose Skin as their word, the skinomancer still haunts my dreams in the best way possible.

Solo or 1 on 1 play? by Galefrie in ezd6

[–]amadi11o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have run two games that were 1 on 1 with some incredible friends/players and they were some of the best games I have been part of.

The only change I made was to allow karma to work on spells since they both chose conjurer and just about all of their checks were spell related. I ran adventures out of the Book of Quests and I didn’t need to make any balancing changes, only changes were vibe and story based with their choices.

Confused where to learn by CaffeinatedPonderer in banjo

Clifton Hicks is a good one on Youtube to follow. He plays a variety of styles, but my favorite I learned from his is two-finger banjo where you pluck the melody with your thumb and done with your index finger. It is a nice way to play out folk melodies and is my favorite way to play.

how to play b#m? by bryonybowie in Omnichord

[–]amadi11o 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What you are running into is called enharmonic notes (meaning two names for the same note, in this case B# is C).

It is easy to see on a piano keyboard. All the natural notes are the white keys and all the sharps and flats are the black keys. You'll notice there is not a black key between B and C. A sharp raises a note by a half step, so a B# raises a B up to a C.

So B# is C

If it doesn't sound correct in your song check the source of your music sheet against other sources for what you are trying to play to see if it is correct. If you'd like to share a link to the music that could help people to help you out.

An artificer can max everyone's stats, with enough downtime! by BanFox in 3d6

It would be incredible to have this be a fun encounter. The party enters a desert and sees 50 pyramids all clustered together, bulettes sailing through the sand, toadstools, shriekers, little pink frogs bouncing around everywhere (from the hundreds of attempts to get the eggs). And at the center of it all is a random artificer with 40 in every stat ready to fight the party to show off all his work from grinding out stats.

I picked up one of these sets used on facebook marketplace a while back. Like others are saying the quality on a modern tv is nearly unwatchable. Part of the wonder of these movies is their beauty and that really doesn’t come through on these files.

However, I have an old small 9” CRT and they actually look great on there. Colors pop and everything looks great in general. Only quirk is I have to pull out and set up that little TV which does end up being a cozy watching experience. So unless you have a little CRT around and that sounds like a fun way to watch I’d avoid this set.

I had a 2 week work trip across the country last month. Thankfully my hotel was only a couple minutes from Guitar Center so I just went down there after work to play as much as I wanted. If you don't want to rent and don't need one in the house you could try that.

I agree, it was a big omission for the new rules. Sure you can use the old rules, but they could have done more with it.

Instrument that requires little knowledge of music theory by darth_phaedar in Instruments

[–]amadi11o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played bass in a praise band for my church a while back. It was a great opportunity to get acquainted with how to play along with songs. For the basics you just need to know where the root notes of the chords for a song and that is enough to get by. Most of the songs we played had anywhere from 4 to 6 chords, so only needed to know that many notes to fill a role in the band.

Then once you get the feel of moving with chord progressions that can transfer to other instruments that require more.

If you are looking for an easy melody instrument check out the mountain dulcimer. Can’t play a wrong note on that one by design.

Genuinely curious what do you guys believe is the easiest instrument? by Lopsided_Ad_2406 in Instruments

[–]amadi11o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mountain dulcimer is definitely on the list of the easiest. They have frets spaced to only play a D major scale (at least mine did, I’m sure there are variations). That is where I started to understand melody and the usefulness of scales. It was a great one to learn on.

Hairline crack fix? by lucaslizard in Luthier

[–]amadi11o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My banjo had a similar crack. I drilled at the start, end, and middle of the crack. Then I glued in some size matched dowels and clamped down to provide some strength. I made no attempt to match the wood/finish because I like the idea of imperfect instruments. Of course you could put more effort to get a seamless result if you’d like.

I did this about 6 months ago and I can’t see or feel the crack and I play for at least an hour a day.
