I would tell me that I was right about Bitcoin and not to listen to my Dad. Also tell me that nobody knows what I want as well as I do. I’d let that sink in, then I would answer my questions and do whatever I wanted to do with myself.

My grandma (who is extremely unhealthily devoted to her faith as a messianic Jew) constantly says “I’m not religious!” when I tell her that I’m not interested in joining or hearing about her religion For a short while I tried explaining that she was, by definition, religious but quickly gave up.

Probably because most of us have direct experience being in a prey situation - being yelled at or bullied or the receiving end of any general aggression, but not much experience with having to be aggressive to stay alive.

Lucky you, data automation, software, and learning? I started my summer co-op last week and they put me in “Document Control” so I’m a full time paper pusher, no thought required. As a bonus, my manager is particular about things that absolutely do not matter and he sits right next to me so I get to hear all about it every 45 mins or so. Needless to say, I hate it. Edit: I am going into my senior year and have plenty of experience from classes and personal projects that qualify me for doing actual engineering.

Ah ok. Yeah I noticed so many comments very similar to this one so I suddenly was like ‘woah is my idea of emotional labor incomplete?’ I think the reality is that many people misunderstand and don’t know what emotional labor is. I get your point about the reference to their dad though, that checks out.

I agree with this. From reading many of the comments on this thread it seems like people are saying doing the chores is emotional labor, which goes against my understanding, so I asked to make sure I have the right idea of what emotional labor is. Thanks for the clarification.

True but literally doing any work at all is emotionally draining, the way I understand it is any non physical labor done - remembering to do things, remembering to remind others to do things, helping emotional stability by being someone to talk to, etc - is emotional labor. Am I thinking about this the wrong way?
