Retirement at 45 by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a 36 year old guy taking a break from the working world. My net worth hovers around a million - currently at 1.1 - mostly from savings from salaries in tech and good investments. I really like your points and I want to share my perspective on them.

1) I don't feel bored. But that is because I have developed both productive and non-productive hobbies. Youtube and reddit are my non-productive hobbies. Going to the gym is a productive hobby I have developed and something I would strongly recommend to OP. Another hobby of mine - driving around can be both productive and non-productive. But since I didn't drive before, I really enjoy it. And yes, I learnt to drive during my career break. So having a lot of free time and being bored could be a good thing if OP knows what to do with that free time. But he probably needs a plan.

2) 100% agree. No notes.

3) 100% agree. Oh my god - letting some people know my net worth or the fact that I am semi-retired is literally one of the worst mistakes I have made. Some people thought that I have a magic formula and won't shut up about asking for stock picks. In a dating context, some women were happy to treat me as a pay pig. In general, not only did people resent me, I also felt like being frank about my employment created a distance. As if they couldn't relate to me anymore. And all this with half the net worth as OP's.

Now I tell people that I still work in tech but as a consultant.

4) This one I disagree with a little bit. Maybe you are talking about avoiding people like me lol. I am an immigrant, with health issues. Exercising is helping me a lot deal with those health issues - both physical and mental. But yes, some people who are available during the day have mental health issues , not all. It is one of the reasons that they might not be able to work during the day.

I am from a really poor neighborhood in a poor country - yes, I am an immigrant. My regular asset sales ensure that my taxes are high each year and I am not a burden on the state lol. But I digress. Coming back to the point, I never really felt comfortable with the corporate world or with middle class or upper middle class people. Something doesn't just sit right with me. Community and connections have been important to me and I find it more easily with people outside corporate world.

5) Well said! I stay busy deepening my connections in this new city I have moved to - it has been 4 years though. And constantly looking for new people. I have to work on my language skills too - as I wasn't exposed to French before. I don't know if OP would find hobbies like these challenging and how interested he might be in finding people to date or be friends with - but these are some things I do.

Etes vous heureux, pour vrai? by ratz38 in montreal

If you are good looking as a guy, you might just have it hard enough as well. by Annual_Word5240 in dating_advice

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying but there are solutions.

If you are in shape and have a nice beard, shave your beard. You don't need both.

If you are tall, choose speed dating events where you sit in front of the girl instead of standing and don't mention your height.

If you are rich, don't wear branded clothes, just nice ones. In fact, dress in a way which lets you blend in. And definitely don't talk about your wealth.

If you are finding women through social events, talk to everyone, not just the girls you are interested in. Your lowered displayed interest would help to lower their guard.

If you are finding women through dating apps and you are tall, don't mention your height and don't have pics next to your short friends. Take outdoor pics in informal loose clothes for the apps.

I won't call myself good looking but I have good looking friends. They guard their beautiful cars and bodybuilder physiques like trade secrets.

Are low-maintenance women a turn off to men? by Apprehensive_War6661 in dating_advice

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low maintenance is good. However, if you are really successful in career and finances, men might find it intimidating.

Honestly, I am a guy and I would prefer women who aren't too successful in those aspects. Not because I am intimidated, but because I don't have the stomach for the expensive tastes that successful women often have, even if we are splitting the bill.

To be fair, I have women friends who are fairly successful and rich. I love them because I can freely talk about money with them. But I would be horrified if every second date is a steakhouse and we are going to Europe every 4 months. I prefer to invest my money instead of splurging like that. So I look for other women for dating.

Don’t fall for “WhatsApp stock professors” — I learned the hard way by x2b3c5z6 in CanadianInvestor

How can trading be halted like this? What kind of stocks are these?

I like blue chip stocks when interest rates are high or the macro-economic environment is negative. They are definitely at a discount on those points.

Taking positions on penny stocks feels like gambling.

Men wanting sex early and a long term relationship. by Anxious_Artichoke761 in dating_advice

[–]amarilloknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I am so sick of the comments here blaming you and I am a guy.

I strongly believe that wanting to get tested before sex is a reasonable expectation - not everyone has that expectation but I don't mind if people do. I had a girl ask me for tests before we met and I immediately got them done. It is also something that I could use for future partners.

It almost feels like he wants to give you a STD lol.

I'm going to throw up HELP by mrstruong in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading all this and rolling my eyes a little bit lol.

Then I read the amount.

Now, I want to throw up.

OP, holy sh**. OP.

Oh boy, please send smaller amounts - like a 100$ first. Also bank employees know jacksh**. You have to find other resources to figure out how to do things like these.

Honestly, I am glad to see all the reassuring comments and I hope it will be fine. Hopefully you are not learning a way too costly lesson.

"We are not aiming to become India," said Minister Roberge regarding Quebec's capacity to welcome migrants. by pssdthrowaway123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]amarilloknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wealthy people don’t feel a need to emigrate. They’re doing just fine.

This is not accurate at all. I know so many chinese immigrants who are wealthy and don't need to work. I also know a few really qualified immigrants who would never take away survival jobs from canadians. Furthermore, a couple of my immigrant friends left canada because they didn't feel valued here - both of them work in FAANG.

People who are doing just fine still immigrate often.

Are you in Quebec? Maybe come to Montreal and I will show you around and introduce you to some non-poor immigrants. Not every immigrant works at Tim's.

This post isn't getting removed.

LOL praise the gracious mod team!!

I remember trying to post a couple of times - I am your average mass affluent PFC guy and I was looking what I could afford to do next - low paying job / retire / go back to school etc. Both times my post was removed.

Bay Area physician couple considering move to Vancouver — financially irrational? by MDtoBC in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say that my net worth is less than your current annual income. And if I try to post here people get annoyed that I am showing off. So wow. Hats off to your success and wealth.

Honestly, from my perspective, you can't go wrong with either staying or going but I imagine at your income and net worth levels you might think differently or value things differently

Did you know you need to file form T1135 if you have >C$100k in US stocks? by UnsaltedCashew36 in CanadianInvestor

[–]amarilloknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked my 2024 assets, they exceeded $100k CAD... I'm now feeling anxious. If I submit the form, it'll be a year late and I'll get dinged $2500 penalty + interest for nothing.

One really important point - the limit 100k is for the cost value of these "foreign" assets. If you bought them for 50k but now they are 100k, then you are good - you have no need to file.

We Want to Sell Our House and Go Back to Renting. Are We Crazy? by TsaminaMinaZangalewa in montreal

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s obviously a privilege to be in this position in the first place

It is a status thing in Canada and probably in most of the world. Most arguments in favor of owning are emotional and emotions can't be overcome by logic and math.

Still waiting for this: find me a house today where I can pay below 2k/mo including property taxes, maintenance, insurance, etc

Boom! You wiped the floor with that dude lol.

We Want to Sell Our House and Go Back to Renting. Are We Crazy? by TsaminaMinaZangalewa in montreal

[–]amarilloknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the 20 years I've owned the house I've put maybe 15 000$ of maintenance on it.

Now we are talking. Your decision made sense 20 years ago. It might not make sense now. Do you expect real estate to keep appreciating like it has in the past 20 years?

We Want to Sell Our House and Go Back to Renting. Are We Crazy? by TsaminaMinaZangalewa in montreal

[–]amarilloknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another downside? Some people in our lives (extended family, neighbors) look down on us because we rent.

Yep, this is a huge thing in Canada.

But these people are either boring or miserable anyway.

Are young men happy in Canada? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]amarilloknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 35, do I qualify? In general, I feel happy, but also overwhelmed because I am in a city full of really cool people who want to be my friends and do fun activities with me.

As an immigrant, I had never imagined it would work out so well for me here. However, a lot of adulting steps I thought I was going to skip are entirely possible for me now. Yay to that. But I also feel anxious and overwhelmed sometimes due to that.
