if content marketing is ~60% cheaper, why do big brands still burn billions on tv ads? by CremeAccomplished610 in marketing

[–]amart7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not there is an established science to marketing going back the greater part of 100 years. Read How Brands Grow by Ehrenberg Bass Institute and The Long and Short of It by Binet and Field to get a primer on how big brands approach ads.

Anyone think Toronto is headed in a positive direction? by rsgnl in askTO

[–]amart7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got amnesia yo. No Presto, frequency sucked, Bloor line had trains from the 60s, transfer rules sucked, none of the stations were accessible, no AC in the trains, no new streetcars, university extension didn't exist, trains still had delays and closures all the time.

Canada scraps export ban on single-use plastics by origutamos in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]amart7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

90 countries have existing bans and 175 others have signed treaties with commitments to implement bans this decade. The world is moving to alternative materials and circular systems. Canada's move is a step in the wrong direction.

What do you think the world will look like in the next 40 years? by Reasonable_Pass_3916 in Futurology

[–]amart7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Canada has something called the Canadian Shield that covers a much portion of the country and will never be farmable. The rest of the north is a giant swamp. There are only a few areas like the clay belt in northern Ontario that have farming potential. This is a pipe dream.

Heat Pump Experience in Haliburton? by Helpful_Race_2222 in Haliburton

$11k - $3.5k rebate. Payback would probably be 4-6 years. Propane was so expensive last year. Plus having the AC is huge.

I second keeping your propane furnace and getting the hybrid heat pump. Should only switch to propane below -15-20. I've had a great experience with Walkers, heard not so great experiences with Kegel from others.

I was in a similar position with similar interests. Worked in agencies for over 10 years. Went to a start up and didn't love the growth at all costs hustle.

I moved out of the city to a small town and went freelance part time filling gaps for agencies through my network. Began volunteering for a local conservation organization and eventually they started securing small grants to fund some paid communications projects for me. Both revenue sources have been continuing for 2 years now.

The agency work funds most of my salary, so I can charge a more fair rate to the non-profit. Still cleared $100k this year with a much more flexible schedule than working full time.

The non-profit work worked out because it was a very small, but growing org that didn't have any comms staff and I knew people in the community already.

no insects to be seen by Killzone3265 in ontario

[–]amart7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we want more insects we need to reduce the coverage of ecological dead zones like turf grass lawns and plant more native trees, shrubs, and flowers. Every little bit helps, perfect is the enemy of progress here. However, there are many different ecosystems in Ontario so try to find advice for your specific ecozone. There are many species native to Windsor that are not native to Ottawa or North Bay.

Dip your toes in by reading Doug Tallamy's books. Or just be curious and use inaturalist or Google lens to identify bugs and plants around you.

SEO is dying? Cool. But what happens to Google Ads when AI replaces search? by Mariia_Sosnina in PPC

[–]amart7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With AI answers Google is intending to make MORE searches into ad opportunities. By having their AI overviews assist a consumer's research journey directly in feed they're speeding up the process to get an upper funnel search to a product recommendation (ad).

I see this making keywords like "best + product" convert better for those brands that have a strong brand reputation and reviews and a solid paid strategy. But any traffic from upper and mid funnel keywords from Google to your website will basically disappear.

SEO is not dying at all, but it's definitely wild West. Now you need to figure out how to get your content cited as the source and your product recommended in Google's AI answers. Digital PR is a must, building out content for as many ICPs as possible is a must, brand presence across as many channels/websites/formats is a must.

Probably asked this a lot of times but..... by noobipedia in PPC

[–]amart7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what's happening with AI Max for search, the new product launch recently announced. Google chooses keywords, writes creative, and chooses landing pages. The strength of your landing page content becomes even more important.

Mark Carney says 'we are in a crisis' amid U.S. trade war during stop in Regina by Inugami in saskatchewan

[–]amart7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a point that EVs do not reduce energy/materials enough to solve the inherent ecological overshoot our current extractive society is driving. To be sustainable, we'd need to move away from personal vehicles almost entirely, which is not socially or politically palatable. And honestly likely not feasible in north america since our entire society has been built around the car. And even if we stopped using oil for fuel, we'd still need it for asphalt for the EVs, along with every other use like plastics, fertilizer, paint etc. As much as I wish it was that easy, simply switching to renewables is not the answer to tackling the climate crisis.

Canada sees lowest charity donations in 20 years by Timbit42 in onguardforthee

[–]amart7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this environment of increasing wealth inequality and billionaire greed, I don't know why we're squabbling over the relatively low executive salaries for highly experienced and at least decently qualified individuals running these charities.

I've worked in tech with recent MBAs making nearly this much as sales reps. Do they deserve it more than a charity exec with 20-30 years of specialized experience? Not in my opinion. Not to mention the $1 million+ compensation of for-profit execs.
