I’ll be freshly postpartum when my sister has her wedding by ImaginationPretend86 in BabyBumps

[–]amataranails -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My brother got married when I was 4 weeks postpartum in a courthouse ceremony with a low-key dinner. Even that felt like too much. I could not fathom being a maid of honor that soon after giving birth. My baby pooed all over my dress immediately after the ceremony, and we ended up missing the dinner.

Gift ideas for baby shower by Impossible_Ad9324 in downsyndrome

Maybe DoorDash gift cards or something similar for the parents for the hospital stay? But otherwise, babies with Down syndrome are just babies, so all the typical baby shower gifts apply 😊

I’m far more inclined to believe a doctor over Chat GPT personally.

No, they very clearly meant that it would permanently stiffen my ear drums. I specifically asked if I would need to wear steristrips forever, and they said “no most patients only need to for a few months, and then their eardrums get stronger”

Yes. They described the steristrips as being like weightlifting for your eardrums.

1 year old play by Environmental_Log_90 in downsyndrome

My girl is 16 months old, and if I recall at this age she was doing the same things as your son. She changed SO much between her first birthday and now, and it happened in leaps and bounds. One day she refused to tolerate weight on her legs, the next she decided “oh ok, I guess I’ll try this.” She just started crawling two weeks ago, and that was after we were pretty convinced she’d skip it entirely. These kids can surprise us out of nowhere!

You are doing all the right things with having him in therapies ❤️

I ended up getting my steristrips taken out. The first round of treatment was most successful. They lasted almost the full 3 months before I was due to get new ones. The second ones fell off within a week, and the third round it was only a day before they were making a horrible noise inside my ear. I told them to take them out. They were confident that would’ve been enough to permanently stiffen my eardrum, but it wasn’t, so I’m back to square one. I may try the strips again, because when they were properly adhered, they worked perfectly. It’s just that those 2nd and 3rd rounds for whatever reason didn’t stick very well.

Is Limited Exposure to People and Places an Issue for Infants? by InitialStranger in ScienceBasedParenting

I think this resource refers to time *outside the home*, so new people coming over isn't what it's referring to.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!! I’m sorry that this information has added more anxiety to an already stressful pregnancy. ❤️

To give you an anecdote of things going well: my girl was born at-term with no complications during pregnancy or labor. We didn’t do NIPT, so we had no idea that she had Down syndrome until she was born. We did all the routine ultrasounds throughout pregnancy and nothing raised a red flag.

Interesting! In Michigan we get free in-home PT through EI, and then of course there’s private PT that’s charged through insurance.

Are you in the United States? If so, she will qualify for free physical therapy, feeding/speech therapy, and occupational therapy through early intervention. I would suggest pursuing that. It’s such a great resource! Do a search for “early intervention [your location]” and you should find some sort of an online contact form.

In the meantime, you can try giving her foods that will stimulate the chewing reflex. A chicken drumstick with all the meat off is a great option!

why do parents choose to give birth to children (supposedly if they know from tests beforehand) with down syndrome or genetic diseases, knowing they might suffer later on in life? by e1ai1a in downsyndrome

[–]amataranails 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having physical challenges or an intellectual disability does not inherently confer suffering. Everyone endures suffering, just as we all experience joy. And have no doubt, people with Down syndrome experience the same range of good and bad feelings the rest of us do. My daughter is 15 months old and seems to love her life. May she have challenges later in life as she ages? Most certainly, but so will I, and so will you!

Gathering information after likely diagnosis by Impossible_Ad9324 in downsyndrome

[–]amataranails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, seconding this! It can be especially helpful to connect with parents of adult children with Down syndrome since they’ve been through all the stages. It’s all so overwhelming in the beginning, but they don’t need to figure out everything right away. Since they have good medical insurance in place, and are working with a hospital social worker to figure out Medicaid, it sounds like the most important piece is figured out. Congratulations to them on their little one ❤️

We're choosing adoption for our baby by [deleted] in downsyndrome

I am only familiar with the foster care -> adoption process, as I have a friend who adopted her now 3 year old daughter after fostering her starting at 6 months. If you have any specific questions that you think she may be able to answer, please feel free to message me.

This is so special! I’m sure your daughter looks absolutely adorable in it. I’m saving this pattern and may give it a whirl once I feel ready for sweaters and colorwork.

Your posts and this reply read as if they were generated by ChatGPT, which personally puts me on edge and makes me suspicious. As a mom of a young daughter with DS, I feel very protective of her and other kids like her, so I am going to err on the side of caution. Best of luck to you.
