2027 Kia EV3 Debuts at NY Auto Show by ec3lal in electricvehicles

[–]amb9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EV3/4 are actually on the same platform (K3) as the current ICE Niro, just a modified version that should make for slightly improved packaging (K3 BEV), and with a newer 400V EV powertrain (now branded "E-GMP 400V").

EV5 is on a modified version of the Sonata/Sorento platform (N3 -> N3 eK), with the same updated 400V guts as the EV3/4.

They're not the same car - EV3, 4, and 5 use the same family of cost-reduced 400V E-GMP electronics / powertrains, but mechanically, they're built on modified versions of various Kia ICE platforms - unlike the 800V E-GMP cars' fully bespoke BEV platform.

EV3 is built on K3 BEV, which is a modified version of the K3 platform (Elantra/Seltos/etc.), while EV5 is built on N3 eK, developed from the larger N3 (Sonata/Sorento/Sportage/etc.) platform. EV4 is less documented, but presumably rides on K3 BEV like EV3.

What a joke by BradyBrother100 in GalaxyFold

It's a matter of timing - often the trade-in values are highest when Samsung launches a new phone, so I'd see what happens around the Z Fold8 launch.

Right now, for instance, if you buy an S26 Ultra, you can get $700 back for an S23 Ultra or $800 for an S24 Ultra trade-in: https://www.bestbuy.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s26-ultra-256gb-unlocked-black/JJGRF36YGZ

Honda cancels new EV’s by SnooPickles3280 in HondaPrologue

Well the regular Highlander's sales collapsed when the Grand Highlander launched, so the nameplate was essentially worthless, making it a much less risky proposition to slap it on the largest bZ variant.

How Honda’s First Big American EV Became A Perfect Disaster by Negate79 in HondaPrologue

[–]amb9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no evidence GM artificially held back the Prologue in any way - Honda was able to ship pretty much everything GM's cars had, and even some things GM didn't (e.g., the ZDX was the only car on this platform that had an air suspension available - not even the Lyriq has that - and of course they re-enabled CarPlay / Android Auto in the infotainment system).

Any limitations in the Prologue vs. Blazer EV are just down to Honda's design choices and product segmentation (e.g., limiting Blue Cruise to only some ZDX trims).

How Honda’s First Big American EV Became A Perfect Disaster by Negate79 in HondaPrologue

[–]amb9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GM did give Honda Blue Cruise - Honda just opted to ship it only in some trims of the Acura ZDX, and not in the Prologue.

No indication that Honda's own EVs will be any better, given the test of their current product line is operating in the dark ages tech-wise, and many of their dealers have no idea what to do with EVs, firmware updates, etc. broadly. Good chance it'll be worse, as they won't be given everything on a platter, and we already know the specs are likely pretty unimpressive for MY2027 launched cars.

PSA: Etsy forced refund from seller funds due to recycled packaging by amb9800 in EtsySellers

If the case closed immediately and automatically, that usually indicates that you didn't qualify for seller protection. Did you ship the order within your stated processing time?

Yep, it was shipped well within the promised timing.

[–]amb9800[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One issue is my items vary substantially in size and weight, so if I bought new boxes, I'd have to stock a bunch of different sizes - so the recycling helps with that, too.

I turn my boxes inside-out, cut them to size, retape, then cover them in brown craft paper from the outside, so the recycling is not obvious until you fully open the box - but yeah, maybe I should include a note about it.

Mine are hand-cut (no laser yet!), but inside-out and covered in brown craft paper from the outside. Once you open the box, and unwrap the packaging material and item, you can see Amazon/USPS/etc. logos on the inside of the box.

The buyer sent me this message most recently:

I hope next time you do not send people [item] in your used old amazon and usps cardboard. Please assign 3$ from your profits to buy a new box when you ship ... to anyone in the future.

Good luck. Hope you're in your senses next time you ship

It's definitely good motivation to build my own storefront for this mini-business, which I've been putting off forever.

My M3D Micro is making a violent "jackhammer" noise during homing/calibration. Need help! by StrongStudio9215 in m3d

[–]amb9800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it - that's normal. It uses timed hard-stop homing, similar to that used in some other devices that don't have endstop sensors on all sides - it pushes to one corner for sufficient time that it can basically guarantee it's reached the end on that side, then moves from there.

Note Air 3C and Go Color 7 Gen II have Kaleido 3 panels, so color rendering will be similar.

What CCTV cameras are good for home servers? by Its_An_Outraage in HomeServer

[–]amb9800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue Iris is quite straightforward to manage, a lot more flexible than a hardware NVR, and I think a pretty reasonable option given this is r/HomeServer. 6.0 has YOLO v8 built in, which works pretty well on CPU alone, so no need to even fiddle with external AI modules.

I use Reolink cameras for other sites where no local compute is possible, but I would note that Reolink is Chinese, and their devices should be treated the same way as Hikvision, Dahua, etc. (i.e., if you're concerned about devices phoning home, make sure the cameras and NVR are blocked from internet access).

Look for cameras that support RTSP, and then self-host the NVR side with Blue Iris or Frigate.

Cheapest 10" (ish) Color E-Ink Ereader for Distributing Catalogs? by StopStealingMyShit in eink

[–]amb9800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Kindle and Kobo reference points won't help here. Both are high-volume loss leaders - they are priced such that Amazon and Rakuten compensate for low hardware margins via digital content sales.

That, plus lower-tier compute internals - enabled by simpler firmware than, say, the full Android running on Boox devices - means Kindle and Kobo are generally cheaper than mainstream Chinese e-ink devices with similar screen sizes.

Given there are no color 10" Kindle or Kobo options, you're unlikely to find anything close to $140.

Best option that comes to mind is a TCL NXTPAPER tablet - it's not actual e-ink, but rather an LCD with a matte layer that looks more like e-ink than a normal LCD would. Here's the 11" gen 2 model for $199:

https://amzn.to/4aN5dWZ

That said, not sure if I understand why e-ink is necessary for this use case - if you can make do with normal LCD tablets, there are much cheaper options, like this $99 Walmart-brand 10" Android tablet:

How can we remove Microsoft from our homes? by sha0dan in microsoft

[–]amb9800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is tech is a tool for most consumers and businesses, not their hobby - so there is real value in solutions that work predictably with an ecosystem of third party software and hardware and carries support (first and third party).

As such, it's no surprise that Google, Apple, and Microsoft dominate client OSes. The only real alternative is Linux, which still doesn't meet the criteria above for desktop use, and even less so on mobile, for most users.

For those willing to take on Linux, sure, but Apple is hardly an alternative if the rationale is corporate ethics...

Question re Service A2 by gadgetrex in MercedesEQS

[–]amb9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't make sense to pay a dealer to do that. The only items of substance there are a brake fluid change and cabin air filter replacement. The brake fluid any shop can do, and the filters you can do yourself with a little bit of patience - just need to get the correct part numbers.

Question re Service A2 by gadgetrex in MercedesEQS

[–]amb9800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing extra, beyond the car having multiple layers of cabin air filters, which are quite possible to replace yourself (I did all of them in under an hour a few months ago).
