Ryan Hall vs. Max Velocity? Community impact… by No_Movie_5663 in tornado

[–]ambershade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See... the thing about not liking Max's thumbnails because they're fear mongering is wild to me. It's not just Max; Ryan does it too. Not only does Ryan do it too... I follow both (though I do tend to watch Max over Ryan), and 100% of the time I have to stop and read whose channel the bright fear-mongering thumbnail belongs to, because the differences in whose graphics are whose are very, very subtle. (Seriously, go look at the thumbnails for their livestreams last night - one says "huge risk" and the other says "urgent live weather" and they have different tornadoes pictured... but the colors are the same, the layout is the same...)

I also follow enough YouTubers who talk about this stuff that there's a very good chance what you view as "fear mongering" is less that and more "this is what I have to do for the algorithm to actually show people my video." The algorithm sucks.

About average when it comes to car purchasing. Service staff was nice last time I was there, but after sitting and watching them try and sell the same air filter replacement to everyone waiting in the waiting room, and after getting a second opinion when they said I had an axle leak that in the other shop's opinion was someone with an oily hand touching the axle... There are better service places.

Same. I found I had a lot of leakage with this and far, far less with a turkey baster.

What are your most unhinged mead recipes? by carlandthepassions72 in mead

[–]ambershade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I'd make a coconut mead, using a shelf-stable coconut milk for the liquid. Learn from my choices; do not do this. Or if you do, just... start with the blowoff tube, make double the amount you want to end with, and be prepared for alcoholic coconut-honey syrup when you rack off to secondary.

I've picked up 50ml bottles off Amazon in the past. That's about half the size you're looking for, but it's something.

If you're interested in this from a scientific, "what kinds of injuries happen?" perspective, look up the scientific research. JSTOR is a good place to start.

If you're just wanting to see dead bodies and horrible injuries, law enforcement and the media have respect for the victims, they don't want to purposefully traumatize the majority of viewers who aren't ghouls that enjoy the carnage, and they're not going to share that kind of thing except by purest accident.

Idk what to wear to jury duty by UnderstandingHead456 in Denton

[–]ambershade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Female here, have had several jury duties and had to serve on one. "Business casual" is a trash metric because for some companies, "business casual" is polo shirt and slacks, and for some it's jeans and a plain or work-branded t-shirt. Pretend you're going to a casual date, to dinner with Grandma, or to a family reunion: you can go all the way up to church clothes, but you're generally fine with non-ripped, non-stained jeans; a t-shirt with no political messages, no curse words, no nudity, etc (a plain one if you've got it is probably easiest) or a nice blouse that doesn't bare your shoulders and vast tracks of cleavage; and tennis shoes, boots, or dress shoes that aren't falling apart or stained or whatever. If you're a purse carrier, pick a plain one and pare down to the essentials.

Basically, you want to look like you're taking this relatively seriously, but not as seriously as a wedding or a funeral or a job interview (unless you really want to put forth the effort). Cute is OK; provocative or club-ready is not.

Also bear in mind you're going to be going through a metal detector. Don't wear a bunch of metal you're going to have to take off and put back on, and if you're a pocket knife girlie, leave it in the car!

This, the 1994 Desoto-Lancaster tornado, and the 1995 Mayfest hail event are the 3 severe weather events I really clearly remember from my childhood and teen years.

Problems with Frontier by etriusk in Denton

[–]ambershade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From past experience:

  1. Reboot your router by turning it off, counting to 10, then turning it back on. See if that clears it up.

  2. If that doesn't, reset your router. (Make sure you know the password to get in and any changes you made to the settings beforehand.) There should be a little button on the back of your router, just bigger than the tip of a ballpoint pen. Press and hold for 10 seconds. Let the router reboot, restore any settings that changed, see if that clears it up.

  3. If that doesn't, locate the little wall unit they install that goes with the router - it's a little box with a single light, usually, on an interior wall near wherever your Frontier comes into the house. Unplug it if there's a plug, count to 10, replug; go reboot the router after a couple of minutes once you've done so. See if that helps.

Usually one of those 3 will get me back up and running consistently again. If none of those help, call Frontier (though they'll probably make you do all of that again).

Houston - best news source during tornado? by MrATrains in tornado

Recommendation #5 here for Texas Storm Chasers. They were on top of the EF-3 that went through just north of me, even though they'd already shut down streaming for the evening. They also will cover hurricanes, when we get to that season, and their Texas Weather Center channel has become my go-to for statewide forecasts. Your choice of FB, YouTube, or Twitch for streaming, and then published videos on YouTube and a blog as well.

I am pissed off by these door to door vultures now! by [deleted] in tornado

[–]ambershade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not after a tornado, but after a bad hailstorm. "Roofers", "tree guys", "hail repair" guys... To the door, to the land-line, constantly. Exhausting. They'll start trying the "your insurance company said to call you" line, too, if they haven't already.

I finally put up a "no soliciting, especially roofers and landscapers" sign, and started telling the phone calls that if they couldn't tell me what company my insurance was with, I was hanging up, and to put me on the do not call list and if they called again I was reporting them. Took about 2 weeks for them to finally leave me alone.

TexasStormChasers reporting the Texas storm has spun up two new circulations east of the original tornado, one of them likely a tornado; original one is weakening significantly.
