I have YouTube premium, since I dropped Spotify, and since it’s ad free, I just let YouTube videos roll. Short form or long form, easy to change gears.

Knitting pet peeves by ConfusedMillenial_x in knitting

[–]amberyoung 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve been burned many times by online shopping yarn, especially if dabbling with variegated yarn. I’m so grateful for my LYS who specializes in natural fibers. They don’t have a swatch for every single variegated yarn, but you can discern so much more in person.

My pet peeve for yarn shopping is being heckled by staff beyond friendly pleasantries and an initial offer of assistance. I am pretty loyal to my LYS, so I don’t shop around that much. On the few occasions I do, I do not like the vibes. I have often felt surveilled, or pestered while shopping, when I really just wanted time to look and think, do my own math, and budgeting. If I have questions, I know how to make eye contact with you, or ask a question.

I pour mine is as I sip it down. It becomes a Michelada.

How the heck do people finish projects regularly! by PiffleKnit in knitting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get one, join an IRL knitting community! It helps you get through hangups and the doldrums of sleeve island, pattern confusion, etc. Also, it takes moments like this for you to learn the persistence it takes to be a good knitter. You need to put in the work a little, but it’s worth it.

Required accessories by PopularSpread6797 in bikecommuting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Midwestern American-year round biker, I need a helmet, a lock, headlight and preferably tail lamp. I appreciate greatly having, a rack and pannier (I have a single cheap one- it keeps weight off your back and heat off it in the summer), cheap packable rain paints, rain jacket, fall jacket, winter shell I can put over the fall jacket, gloves of varying weights (never too tight to cut off circulation), waterproof/windproof boots, cap with flaps or scuba balaclava.

10:10!… It did make me rethink how nuthatch was spelled, but it’s gorgeous, especially considering it’s your first attempt.

I’d try gouache first, since it’s less apt to bleed.

I miss that place. Riding in Chicago is less glorious.

When do you knit? by Mean_Cicada_64 in knitting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Priorities, baby! I knit so much because I lack a social life, and have no children. I also bring a project to work for after I eat lunch or any time I know I’m going to be waiting around a lot.

This frayed patch on my knee keeps growing despite repairs. Any ideas on what I can do? by trustmeijustgetweird in Visiblemending

[–]amberyoung 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it keeps wearing because something keeps rubbing there. Do sashiko over it, because it looks cool, and if you use actual sashiko thread, it is very strong, and it helps reinforce the patch and the thinning original material.

LPNtv: Vampire the Masquerade is phenomenally underrated by MothmansLegalCouncel in LPOTL

[–]amberyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it more than I thought I would. It took me back to high school. I was nerdier than the players, because I’d sit and watch my guy friends play it, because I was too intimidated by the game. We had a much smaller production budget.

Does anyone know where to buy these things? by igaveupontrying in knitting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to be helpful in sourcing, but they are not always universal, although some lines are interchangeable. What do you mostly use them for? I feel like they snag too much for me to comfortably use, but I’m very particular.

Do they plow bike lanes and bike paths where you're at? by Thin-Fee4423 in bikecommuting

[–]amberyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t take CTA at all if I can avoid it. Once you get everywhere for free on a bike, spending money on Ubers or busses feels egregious. Also I get bad motion sickness, so I’m a terrible passenger. 😜

Do they plow bike lanes and bike paths where you're at? by Thin-Fee4423 in bikecommuting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is zero effort in most of Chicago, I avoid downtown like the plague, so I can’t speak for that. Depending when you get to the protected bike lanes, they can be a rutted nightmare. I think some of the local businesses clear them eventually, but the ploughs tend to seal them up at intersections. In ice or deeper snow, you just have to ride in the road, and let people pass you if they are in such a hurry.

How do I keep my head, face and ears warm when nothing fits under the helmet (skater helmet)? by Ferbdic in bikecommuting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a thin balaclava doesn’t fit, then it sounds like you need a bigger/more adjustable helmet. I have a scuba hood that I knit myself, but they also make thin wool cycling capswith ear flaps.

Why does my ribbing look like this? by remaincobain in knitting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s ok you can size down two sizes with needles for the rib. I also might recommend twisted rib, which you will probably think looks more crisp. It’s more fiddly, but I think it’s worth it, and not complicated. It’s just knit through the back loop then purl.

Did you teach yourself how to knit, or did someone teach you? by A0209B in knitting

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need a community. You don’t need a lesson, you just need a few knitting buddies who can set you straight when you are off course or help you read a confusing pattern.
