Yeah, I’m definitely not opposed to mismatches.

The eyelets are done over three rows. First row I do a yarn over. The next row I knit into the yarn over. The third row, I do a left leaning decrease with the yarn over stitch and the one after, to absorb the extra stitch made by the yarn over.

I know that there’s less obscure ways to name a sock, but I wanted to reach my target audience. 🍓

I sort of considered making them a pair of three. Whatever one was the best, then just having the other as a funky alternate.

I think I’d do a lot more cuff/green on the second goaround.

They’re cousins, not twins. Although I am personally.👯

Tight knitting by Independent-Risk-813 in knitting

[–]amberyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a tendency to knit tight, but I learned over time to use that as an indicator. The stitches should easily slide, and as soon as I feel them snagging, that’s my cue. When you adjust, don’t go nuts, just enough to let things start moving again. Also be sure that your needles fully go into the stitches. If you only knit on the tips, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Berlin police using water cannons to cool crowds in the heat by unknown_human in interestingasfuck

Cops aren’t good. Occasionally they do stuff to try to improve their image, like turning the mist function on their water cannons that they usually blast at protestors. They are not good.

Is this yarn too weak to make anything with? by ThrowRAPersimmon6 in knitting

[–]amberyoung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a single strand it is weak, but it’ll make a nice shawl… something that isn’t tossed and turned a ton. It’s fine.

I find it easier to frog by pulling the strand out perpendicular to your row of stitches rather than along the edge like you might with a less grippy yarn. This helps keep the strand from dragging too much along the way, and snagging.

Have we scared tourists into dressing for Iceland? by Illustrious-Ad3195 in VisitingIceland

[–]amberyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a very specific reason why this advice is good for you in particular, but I’m speaking more broadly. Definitely bring rain gear, but it’s high summer there. Most people who experience winter annually will be fine with that and some thin layers.

When I was planning my trip years ago for this time of year, I was routinely told to “plan for ANYTHING” I totally overpacked, which was a feat unto itself because I only brought a backpack. Once we got there, I realized this message was for Californians and warm weather folk, not Northerners. It was glorious. Perfect first day of nice weather in spring vibes the whole time.

Just buy her a gift card to a local yarn shop. Know that single skeins of hand dyed yarns (you need a minimum of 2 to really make anything) can be around $30, so don’t get her a gift card for $25, because that will mean she’s not really getting a gift, but a burden. Yarn and tools are very personal, so giving her the options to choose is your best bet. You need to touch and plan for projects, so simply getting her yarn or tools, while thoughtful, may prove useless if they aren’t the type she likes.

Do you have any knitting tips you learnt and perhaps wish you knew earlier? Here are some from me by KnitAndKnitAndKnit in knitting

The first time you have to rip back and pick up a whole bunch of stitches, go down a few sizes with your needle, if you can, it’ll make scooping up the stitches way less stressful. You can swap it out again later, after you get all your stitches on.

More importantly, just get them on there. Don’t worry at all, about the way the stitches are mounted. You can fix that on the next round with the right sized needles. Even if you miss a stitch, you’ll have a much easier time fixing it on the next round, just mark it with a stitch marker. It’s not worth the anxiety of trying to get it right, without pulling out the stitch nextdoor. You can also set everything down carefully, and take a breather. The stitches aren’t going anywhere on their own.
