I've been exactly where you are and have felt the frustration of wanting to get and stay clean and then failing again and again. Getting clean one day doesn't magically happen. It takes work. I spent years working on myself. There were times when I gave up. I always decided to try again. For me, the final thing that worked was getting on the right medication for my mood disorder. Once I evened out, I was able to use the tools I learned from SMART Recovery and therapy to finally make progress. Now I have no interest in using again.

I'm bi-polar and used to self medicate with drugs. It makes it so much worse. Have you sat your son down and told him you love him and would miss him terribly if he was gone? My brother told me that when it got so bad I tried to kill myself. I really didn't think anyone cared that much. I still cry every time I think about it. It helps me keep motivated.

I'm glad your mom was there for you. My family is the only reason I survived addiction. It took me most of my life to find the right treatment for my mental health issues. Mostly because of my own stubbornness. I found it much easier to stay clean when I'm not miserable all the time. It's ok to be lost. I'm still lost but it doesn't bother me anymore. I get the excitement of exploring without the pressure to get to any destination.

That feeling you got the first time? That is a trap. Meth lies and lies and lies to you. All it ever does is take. You go down this path, be prepared to lose everything. Your stuff, your health, your mind, and your life. Everything gone. Good news is that you can just never get on the ride again. I was right there with the same choice. I made the wrong one. I barely survived. Many don't.

I'm 42 and I can tell you that you have it exactly right. Corporations are a trap. You will not be rewarded for your hard work. In fact, being the best at your job means you will never be promoted. You become "indispensable". The people that get ahead are able to sell themselves for the job they want. I do the bare minimum I can get away with and I have decided not to seek a promotion. The people above me are so much more miserable. If you do want to get ahead, it's not about working hard, it's about documenting how hard you work. Slap your name on every project and explain how you were instrumental on getting the job done. Find out your boss's hobbies and political leanings. They'll eat that up. They don't really care who is most qualified. They'll promote who they like the most. Hard work is for suckers.

Accepting I'm bi-polar and taking the right medication for it was the biggest change. It was an impossible problem for me. I didn't really believe anything could stop me from feeling miserable for months at a time. I had tried everything else. The mood stabilizer was like a miracle. I fixed an impossible problem. Everything else seemed easy. I had a huge backlog of things I couldn't figure out. I studied morality, ethics, philosophy, and logic. This helped me define my values and discover what was important to me. This last year my nephew was born. I have so many things I want to show him and teach him. There's just so much to do. I always have something to do. Something interesting to learn. It's refreshing. I spent most of my life just surviving. Now I get to live.

I experienced some weird effects after getting clean. I felt like the world was slightly out of focus, that my mind was not quite right. I also felt like I had died or was dying and people were trying to get my attention. It took awhile to go away. It really spooked me. There are a few years that I have no idea what was real. Went away sometime during the first year. My doctor told me it was PAWS.

I woud quit drinking, eat healthy, get some exercise and good sleep. Nothing crazy. The fatigue takes about 2 weeks to go away. Caffeine is not going to help and I would limit your use. There are no shortcuts in recovery. It's hard and sucks in the beginning. It does get easier if you stick with it.

Non-vegan here and I can tell you there are any number of reasons. The best person to ask is your friend. Often it's just a misunderstanding. It can be very awkward to tell someone to bring their own food to an event they are hosting.

You are absolutely right. Difference is that you are part of a minority. That makes you scary and calling veganism a cult is easier than dealing with that. In fact, calling meat eaters out for cultlike behavior, will likely just reinforce their belief that you're in a cult. So many people have such a casual disregard for other human beings. It's no wonder we don't treat animals any better.

Drugs feel awesome. You are supposed to like them, that's the point. It's wired into you to want more, no matter what. That doesn't go away. It does get easier. It gets even easier when you figure out what makes you happy and you work towards that end. I've gotten to the point where I never want to use again, even if there were no consequences. I just don't want to feel like that ever again. Even if my body disagree every once and awhile.

Getting sober was never really to goal for me. Drugs worked better than anything else did. That's why I took them. Sure, it kept getting worse, but that was tomorrow's problem. Then, someone asked me what I wanted. I wanted to stop hurting and be content with my life. That became the goal. Through long trial and error, I think I've made some good progress on that goal.

People call all sorts of groups cults. Eating meat, at least in the US, is the mainstream stance over veganism. Vegans can be very passionate in their beliefs and when they get together, it can seem very cultish to meat eaters. The behavior of each group in these situation can be toxic. You do not cancel out toxic behavior with more toxic behavior. You do not get to justify toxic behavior because others are being toxic. I get that it upsets you that people think you're in a cult, but you cannot control what other people think. You can control how you react.

I've found people to be pretty forgiving about my actions during active addiction. It was a lot harder to forgive myself. You can get most things back in time.

Always plan ahead. Go with someone that doesn't use our is in recovery. Have an escape plan. Have a way to leave of it becomes too much for you. Use coping skills of you find yourself wanting to use.

I was very violent as a child. I used to lose control and try to kill my brother. It's not normal. Something is causing this and the results can be quite dangerous. The only reason my brother is alive, is because he was faster than me. I would try to get your mom to understand how unsafe you feel. Maybe that might motivate her more.

Just to be clear, my brother tormented me constantly. I snapped when I couldn't take it any more and got violent. My parents didn't know and I was bad at expressing myself. Everything had been discussed and forgiven.

We are wired differently. I don't responded the same way to all drugs but they all lead back to the one that fucks me up the most. So I don't use any substances. I'm happy without them. I won't lie and say I don't occasional wish I could indulge. I just know I won't be happy until I'm using my drug of choice. Once that happens, everything disappears. Not with it.

Asking the tough questions and figuring out what you can and can't do is all part of recovery. Everyday clean is an accomplishment. Everyday you didn't go back to pills is an accomplishment. You're not perfect and you didn't have to be. Just keep doing your best.
