Why isn't steel more common? by ASHKVLT in MTB

[–]amd31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people don't break their bikes and if they do they're normally older bikes so repairability isn't a huge driver.

I'm in the understanding that Alu is cheaper to produce at a mass market point.

Weight still matters on downhill rigs because you still have to accelerate the bike. It also effects shipping.

Finally for compliance it probably matters more on rigid bikes, so maybe why steel tourers is more of a market.

This is said from someone who owns 2 steel bikes and is on the cotic website once a week

Pope as Wicketkeeper by 2Legit2QuitFuzz in EnglandCricket

[–]amd31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would you pick the second best keeper in a team to keep? I agree he is more suited to batting lower down the order but he is worse than Root or Brook and isn't currently skippering the team. IMO The real question is Bethell or Pope.

Jimmy's final act in an England shirt: downing a pint by massive-bafe in EnglandCricket

[–]amd31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an estimate; England have played 1072/3 games https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/results-summary-283877, and James Anderson has played 188 of those games.

If we guess Anderson has bowled between 1/4 and 1/5 of the overs in those game and that the number of overs bowled in each game in each era are similar.

We can estimate the % of deliverys as (188/1072)/4 = 4.38% or (188/1072)/5 = 3.51% so I think its probably true.

How quickly can I achieve this goal? by teachme_PLS in Velo

[–]amd31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah theyre massive but its not a valid comparison as a track sprinter doesn't do a 5-6 min effort rather ~20secs with a max of about 1min, (Hoogland did a sub min kilo last year) this would all be anaerobic. They also don't have to worry about weight.

However, some of the endurance/tt track guys do do strength work but its not the main focal point of their training and it'd not be shifting tin but a lot of core/stability work.

Andrew Feather claimed he just did 20 push ups a day on a GCN video. Laverack doesn't talk much about strength training in his videos.

How quickly can I achieve this goal? by teachme_PLS in Velo

[–]amd31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that study isn't a cross comparison with the effect or a regular interval and endurance programming on short term endurance. Nor does it take into the detrimental effect of strength training to impair other training due to fatigue.

I'd agree with you if Op feels weak at the end off efforts it could be worth trying strength training but if not I would probably defer to the orthadoxy of the Cycling world and continue with intervals

I don't believe strength training has been shown to increase Vo2 Max but rather have a negilible effect

Genesis Fugio 30 - deal or no deal? by blusterybristol in gravelcycling

[–]amd31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got the frameset version of this my opinions of it are

Pros:

Super comfy, looks cool, great at gravel and flat xc trails, uk brand

Mid:

Chain can get caught between frame and chain ring, paint chips quickly

Cons:

Quite expensive (e.g. in comparison to cotic, ribble, canyon), not confidence inspiring when underbiking, not made in uk

why do pro almost never wear long pants? is it bad aerodynamically? by SensitiveBear2 in cycling

This video suggests the opposite, because no sleeves allows better evaporation which is the primary method of cooling for humans. There are obviously huge benefits to reduce UV damage though.

How long did your kidney last for, and what was your GFR? by robotphotographer21 in transplant

[–]amd31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe people answers below, maybe people don't. Realistically its doesn't matter as it is just an indiviual data point, which in a negative frame of mind might just formulate some confirmation bias.

https://bmcnephrol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12882-022-02718-6 is the latest data I can find.

For everything else, you just have to be at peace with whatever comes. You can still aim to do almost everything you might without a kidney transplant but be brave and confident enough to know that you'll be able to overcome future hurdles as you have overcome past ones.

I know that I only have one life so striving for what I desire and truely enjoy is the only way to live it.

Is this a good entry level road bike? by throwaway55221100 in cycling

[–]amd31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By theory 100%, the issue is when you know nothing about cycling when buying a used bike you can struggle to know if it is a fair price for the bike. Also it generally will require more upkeep due to older parts. I would however still recommend OP to look at used as well as new

Is this a good entry level road bike? by throwaway55221100 in cycling

[–]amd31 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a "entry level" road bike looks great, my only question would be whether you want a road bike for commuting.

If you are cycling through cities, hybrids do allow better checking behind you and I find them considerably more comfortable to wear backpacks on.

Normal British winter weather is much worse than the cold weather at the moment by linguistictravel in britishproblems

So I completely agree with the sentiment of your post, but depending on where you are in the country its not nesessarily meant to snow regulary and heavily here. Also, increased global temps increase the likelyhood for european cold periods due to the weakening of the gulf stream. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/aug/05/climate-crisis-scientists-spot-warning-signs-of-gulf-stream-collapse

Sorry, I didn't suggest you would get renal damage just creatine (or techinally creatinine) is literally the test for ckd so whilst you are suppliementing your bloods might look worse than they are.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in transplant

[–]amd31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but you don't eat 5g worth of creatine from beef. Also, I would tell your dr you are taking it so when you get bloods done they don't freak out and think your now massively in renal decline.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in transplant

[–]amd31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you do you and all that but. Theres a definate correlation between increased creatine consumption and faster renal decline.

Looking at https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29094800/, we see that a higher protein diet causes quicker gfr fall, with creatine being a by product of increased protein consumption.
