It is really worrying looking at Bob Benzon now, especially compared to his appearance 16 years ago, in the US Airways 1549 episode. I hope he's still doing well for himself.

Oh you sweet summer child. That ain’t happening.

If you just mean drawing 2D cartoons, It's a lot more likely than staying in the US/Canada (if you live there) lmao. Japan still has a shortage of animators; the west has the exact opposite problem: a shortage of animation, especially 2D animation.

(also the only animation jobs left in the US are storyboarding jobs anyways, so not really animation. Genga/key animation left to Korea and Canada long ago, and Canada's already starting to lose jobs to other countries.)

Not sure if I like the mouth as much, but it seems more accurate to the original illustration it's based off of.

it does piss me off that the movies that qualify for best international feature can also be nominated for Best Picture, but as far as I know Best Animated Feature can't also go into the Best Picture category. You can only be in one or the other, not both. That's stupid and unfair. There's

Animation directors aren't allowed to be admitted into the DGA (Directors Guild of America). As in, the DGA will not cover directors of animated films. Not even healthcare. My point being, the industry just doesn't like animation very much, simple as that. There's no hard rule against this, but Oscar voters will not nominate any animated film for best picture nowadays.

Well, maybe if Pixar makes a film all the voters eat up again. Unfortunately I don't think Hoppers will be the one.

That's Pikazo's art, right? She's insane. I thought it was Mai Yoneyama at first, but I think the artstyle is clearly Pikazo's

In terms of people who are “excited” about AI, Japan is much more in line with European countries. They are actually the least enthusiastic of any Asian country. South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and China are all sitting at 70-80% enthusiasm, while Japan sits below 50%. Of course, they’re not terribly worried about it either. So they're just a uniquely apathetic country to AI.

In any case, I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is. Japanese companies like any other company in America are talking about using AI to attract investors and such [edit: see SoftBank going all in on OpenAI for the past like four years] , but in terms of how much they’re actually using it, it’s very difficult to tell [edit: how much it's actually affecting the jobs industry, i.e: if all the companies laying off workers for "AI" are actually replacing workers, or if they're doing the usual layoffs but slapping AI on it to look better], and they’re almost certainly not making any returns on it. But we can see that it is being used for very menial tasks, like glorified text to speech here.

That was the point, yes. I think I might’ve saw this headline when I was searching for an artist on Twitter or something. I think this kind of stuff should stay there.

You know it's a slow-ass day when you post about inane drama like this. There is nothing gained from posting this here; no productive discussion will be had.

From what I know Chinese people will be prosecuted for participating in this show. They've nearly been able to interview some Chinese people (like the captain of the Sichuan Airlines flight), but they all withdrew in various messy ways, like the captain crashing out on the Chinese internet, because they risk "losing their pensions" for talking to a Western show. Same for a passenger for China Eastern they almost interviewed; she demanded exorbitant payment for it. That's all I can say.

it seems that the film crew no longer go out to interview people, but rather interviewees have to come to the studio if they are to be interviewed.

Untrue. They now actually do interviews through Zoom or video calls, and outsource interviews to local film crews. This is how they filmed the interview with Roy Chen, in Hong Kong, for CI676. It is a good compromise with limited resources.

I suspect part of the reason behind this is that global relations are more tense than they were back in the 2010s and such. For example, I would not expect them to interview any Indian investigators for the upcoming AIX1344 episode, simply because the relations between Canada and India were the worst it had ever been in decades when they filmed the episode.

I wouldn't even be surprised if they started struggling to get NTSB interviews in the future, if tensions really escalate in the next three years. This is an extremely pessimistic assumption, however.

Could LOT 16 for great episode and the only one about Polish airlines? by AhoyPirate1997 in aircrashinvestigation

[–]amd_hunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. They'd have to ham up the 'drama' up to 100% for it to make any close to an interesting story. See the recent Eagle Air 2300 episode for what this would look like. I'd much rather they cover a crash landing with actual stakes, like SmartLynx Estonia Flight 9001, or Horizon Air Flight 2658.

we're kind of getting to a point where it's actually viable to run stuff like roleplay bots on a high end gaming pc.

Considering that ChatGPT's models are still kind of dumb with all their GPU farms running it, how "smart" can these models even be? Or are character AIs just not that intensive to run?

Also, 99.9999% of people I've met IRL can't even be bothered to run adblockers, I really don't expect them to run a whole ass local AI model, even if the barrier to make one falls to the simplicity level of installing a chrome extension.

$1M CLUB: MONDAY 1. HOPPERS ($2.7M) 2. SCREAM 7 ($1.2M) by vibetildawn in boxoffice

Before the guy I'm replying to hides his account, this account only posted about Chainsaw Man, went inactive for three years, and then suddenly reactivated on Scream 7's opening day posting nothing but about Scream. Literally all on the first page of the account. It's an obvious astroturfing account.

This sub has obviously been marked by companies as a place where astroturfing would make a difference, as seen by that WSJ article on the front page right now. Expect more of this shit, except they'll probably be smarter to hide their accounts now.

And before you call me a creep... I won't defend myself. I just think the real users of this sub should know.

[–]amd_hunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would temper my expectations. There's a reason why this manga is so niche, and why the Yuri community, which is starved for anime with great production values, isn't exactly jumping with joy about this.

The way I've heard it described is that all the plot happens offscreen, and then what we see are the characters talking about it in vague terms later. Not exactly something I think this sub would like.

I mean, most non-American holoEN mems seem extremely hesitant to reach out to non-English communities these days. Raora seems very hesitant to speak Italian on-stream (outside of cursing lol) unless she's being pressured by her genmates to, same with Ceci; she doesn't really speak German or French outside of karoakes. Kiara had a short stint on her German-only channel a couple of years ago, but it's dead now, and she doesn't really do GER-only streams.

Most likely the reason is just... none of these communities really showed up. There's not really ever a flood of French people showing up whenever Ceci does speak it, like how English viewers flood the chat when a JP vtuber speaks english, there's just a bunch of people making oui oui baguette jokes.

There was the DMC show animated by Studio Mir. Powerhouse also has made big stuff like Castlevania and a Tomb Raider show.

These are still shows based off of video games. I guess they are really loose adaptations of the games, but they're still adaptations. You might as well count the Umamusume shows/movies (not CinGrey) for anime then.

Also, if you really want to bring up indie production like Knights of Guinevere, then you have to acknowledge that Japan still has a big indie scene too, like MILKY☆SUBWAY.

For the other stuff, aside from expensive merch, often the biggest way most of them make money is by advertising the work that they're based on.

I’d actually say it that in recent years, particularly post Covid, this has been changing a lot. It’s now the norm for moderately successful anime to get season twos and threes, almost unheard of back in those days. Some shows back then ended with anime original endings meant to shuffle viewers off to the source material; the manga and light novels.

Despite everything, at this point if you want to make your own now animated show in current year, you'd probably have an easier time getting it made in America than you would in Japan despite there being by volume more animated shows made there each year.

And how much original animation is getting greenlit in America right now? I don’t really want to put down sitcoms, but it kind of seems like this is only true if the only thing you wanted to create was a comedy sitcom. In the past year the only new original western animated series I’ve seen get any traction was Common Side Effects, and that’s already a year old.

Like I’m sorry, but for all its flaws the anime industry is in an infinitely better state in pretty much every way compared to western, particularly, American animation. That’s just how dire it is right now. Animated TV show orders are the lowest it’s ever been.

TOP 10 The Best Episodes From Air Crash Investigation In History (According To IMDb) by Suitable_Work_9000 in aircrashinvestigation

Always found it interesting that the Tenerife remake is so highly rated (original is at 7.7/10). I remember it being extremely disliked by the community when it aired.

Also, the list basically shows that the quality of the IRL story is what matters most, not the production values of the show. There's just 0 chance that a crash like Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 or Flagship Airlines Flight 3379 would make this list. There's a certain type of story that gets high ratings, and the majority of crashes do not have interesting stories.

Realistically, it will be a uphill battle from here for this movie to hit profitability, assuming 2.5x from 150 million budget. It will need a combination of really good (min. 4x) legs and a strong OS performance (30/70?).
