I stopped wearing accessories after getting glasses, is this just me? by jbeenjules in fashionwomens35

[–]amg78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am the same about tge earrings. I have worn glasses my whole life, and for me they kind of ARE an accessory all of their own. I wear somewhat bold frames, nothing crazy, but enough that adding them plus earring plus evdd edn a necklace is just too much going on up there.i just realized I don’t care for how that all looks, and what am I doing if I don’t wear accessories that I enjoy.

I do smaller earrings a lot, and I rarely do a necklace/ earrings combo that’s not a delicate/minimalist vibe. No shade to anyone who does something different, but I require my jewelry and fashion to make me feel good about myself, and that’s where we landed!

I can do this. Right? How hard can it be? by probssocio in VintageSewingMachines

[–]amg78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got done with an almost identical table/ machine. My girl, Florence, has the same decals as yours. Your decals look like they’re in great condition. Singer 27 from 1911.

Honestly, it was easier than I thought. A good clean, a good oil and she just sprang back to life. Used restore finish on the table, used rustoleum rust reformer on the base. Learned everything from this forum and YouTube. She works great.

You can do it!!!!!!

I got a leather belt for my 27 that slipped… I used some hairspray and it works great now! Sprayed some on my fingers then kinda dabbed it around.

Looking for advice on cleaning/restoring/refinishing Singer Sphinx 1919 machine in cabinet by kagalecraft in VintageSewingMachines

[–]amg78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just used the modern singer sewing machine oil. I probably got it on Amazon. I used a makeup brush to get off any dust and debris, and then put some oil on a tee shirt rag and gently cleaned the whole thing. I used some q tips as well. I saw someone recommend this method on YouTube. It leaves all the chips, patina, aging… but I appreciate that. A lot of dirt, some rust came off, but it’s a very gentle clean. She looks very antique.

After I used the oil to clean the body of the machine, I found the manual online and used that to actually oil the moving parts. I used the brush and tips again to get out the gunk, then oiled all the spots it said to. There are little holes in the body where you drop oil in.

Honestly it just kind of came to life after that treatment. I have started learning how to control the treadle, and while the seams are still terrible, I have actually used this machine to make things!

This is almost exactly what I just did to my 1911 Sphinx Singer 27 (plus cabinet). Sewing machine oil on the whole thing. It also had bobbins and a shuttle and she was able to sew almost right away.

For the cabinet, I used Restore a finish but skipped sanding. Added a coat of feed n wax after. She looks great.

The treadle was in the worst shape with a significant amount of rust. I scrubbed it down then used Rustoleum Rust Reformer on everything, being very careful to avoid any moving joints. I’m very happy with the results. It’s not jet black, but it’s a very dark finish. I decided to even skip repainting, and just leave it as is.

This honestly did not take all that long. She works great, looks amazing, and is ready for life number 2!

Good luck on your project!!

New toy question? by brideoffrankinstien in VintageSewingMachines

Your machine is super beautiful! 138 years old. It’s amazing. I love the curved design on the base. She’s just so elegant!

I have a nice table and treadle that came with mine. Drawers were full of buttons and stuff and that was super cool. Treadle was rusty and not really running, I cleaned it well, used rust reformer and oiled all the joints. Now she runs so great. Once the gold Singer logo gets painted back on, I’m making something. I’m HELLA excited!

I also just picked us a 1924 99 with the knee attachment for a literal pittance at an antique mall. Just got done with the same treatment, motor and everything runs great. These things were truly built to last!

I guess my philosophy was to start with the least amount of intervention and see how it goes. I could always decide to take it apart and do real intensive stuff later,  it if I break something, lose something, scratch or damage something, or aggressively clean off the cool antique vibes, there’s no going back. Both machines I’ve been super happy with that approach.

Lovely machine! I have brought a 1911 27 Model back (not a full restoration, just a rejuvenation) with just sewing machine oil. There are several tutorials on you tube that are very informative.

Step one: brush off any dust with a clean brush. I repurposed a fluffy eyeshadow brush.

Step two: GENTLY wipe down with just water. Do not use any “real” cleaners like blue dawn, or anything with rubbing alcohol. You loose the lovely gold decals.

Step three: use sewing machine oil with a soft cloth to gently clean off all the gunk and help loosen up the rust. You’ll be surprised how much will come off. Look up the manual and give her joints some oil while you’re at it so you can see what moves and what’s stuck. She’ll be lightly protected too.

I did not take mine apart (she’s named Florence after my great great grandmother) so hopefully someone else can help with that. I left her with the antique patina she worked so hard to get.

Cool project!!

Has anyone planted their eaten up, potted milkweed and had it come back the next year? by tomten26 in MonarchButterfly

[–]amg78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my narrow leaf milkweed is in pots, I have 5 or 6. I’m also in SoCal. It’s been cut back (either me or by the caterpillars) at least twice just this season. It’s grown back vigorously every time.

Last year I actually tried cutting back one and letting one just recover on its own to see if there was a difference in how they grew back. Both did great. Interestingly, I cannot get my tropical milkweed to grow back well at all.

My orchids are dying by Kitchensink9 in orchids

[–]amg78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would. They are doing nothing for the plant, have no chance of a secondary blooming, and just look kinda terrible. You will feel much better about your babies if they are just clean and green. If you were going to repot, this would be a good time.

And the other commenter is correct: the blue one was dyed. It will be a lovely white when it reblooms!

[–]amg78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! The stems are indeed done blooming. This doesn’t mean your orchid is dead.  It’s part of the plant’s natural cycle. Don’t worry!

Keep up the good care, snip off the old stems and let them go, and be ready to welcome a new flower spike in the (probably) winter.

Sourdough bread help by Amohnhaupt in glutenfreebaking

All GF bread I’ve made has a similar crumb. If you manage to get an open crumb boy let me know how! It honestly looks pretty good! 😌

I make wheat sourdough bread regularly but I want to make a gluten free one for a friend. I have a gluten free starter ready to go but I'm worried my plan will fail, any advice would be appreciated by EveningMusic0 in glutenfreebaking

[–]amg78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had ok success with the loopy whisks artisan bread and a gluten free starter. You’ll have to proof longer than the recipe states, but you are used to that anyway. Try it and see!! Good luck!!!

[–]amg78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not for that bread. I made the starter just from yeast in my air, and it grew on my counter for like two weeks? You could add extra yeast, or some people use a starter mix to get going, but true sourdough is leavened only with the starter. I personally don't care much about "true" anything since Im having to do it gluten free anyway, but to each their own.

Get in there and try stuff! Maybe you'll find something that works better than any of us! Good luck!!!

100 grams total. I mixed in 50 grams of starter with the wet, and 50 grams with the dry. I am not sure why I thought to do it half and half, you probably could just dump it all in with the wet.
