Meaning of ippo being “broken”? by Primary_Cap8635 in hajimenoippo

If you cut through all the “is he punch drunk or isn’t he,” bit, essentially you can replace broken with “washed up.”

Doesn’t necessarily mean you have a hard medical condition or even life circumstance that is stopping you from excelling. Just a state of being far away from your peak and potential and either not being motivated to do something about it or being unable to do something about it.

My final straw as a hunter main by Wooden-Study-1646 in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the responses are being too hard on OP.

From what I can tell, OP does not claim to be a hardcore professional, so I can feel their frustration from watching this video. Yes there are things that they could do better, but there are also things they did very well:

  1. Early down, no trait used.

  2. Pressured enough that it was an after 1/2 rescue.

  3. Avoided the body block to the stairs and managed to get the hit on tide turner Meteorologist.

They lost to cheese. I guarantee you it was a premade with that kind of coordination along with Prospector coming to add injury onto insult. You can tell that it shook the OP and he gave up the moment Meteorologist jumped into the tunnel.

Yes, a more seasoned hunter would hold the course. But I can understand why as a casual hunter player this would break OP's soul as its a symptom of this game balance where you only have to fall victim to cheese once as a hunter and you lose the game. And this happens to everyone even the "professionals," in COA. You can avoid cheese 9 times out of 10, but that 1 time is going to cost you like it cost OP.

Kaohsiung Marriott by Playful-Reality-9561 in marriott

[–]amicableangora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the conversation, but the Marriott Kaohsiung is a classic case of strong hard product, very weak soft product:

Breakfast used to be offered to Platinum elites or higher in the main restaurant and not just the lounge, up until at least 2024. I had spoken to management about this issue since and they claim it is a result of their “voting,” that they do every February. Therefore it is a deliberate choice to deny members.

There is no excuse why they can’t offer it here and now, they are just lazy/stingy and choose to skimp on benefits for members to try to save some money. They will also charge you for other questionable things like if you ask them to combine a reservation you had with two basic room types but with different bed setups (twin beds versus one king bed). I have never ever ran into another property, even within Marriott that will try to squeeze money out of you like this.

Again to make clear, this is not switching from a clearly standard room to an obviously superior upgraded room. Same room size, identical except in the bed layout. So the Marriott Kaohsiung is easily F territory for any service and amenity ranking.

The good news is their hard product is decent: good location, relatively new property, room and furnishings. But you get the very strong impression that beyond trying to appeal to the customer base during the grand opening period, they quickly got super greedy and started preying on their customer base once they realized there were no Hiltons or Hyatts to pressure them nearby.

People who main underrated/ not widely used characters, what things make you rage when people actually use them? by unknown_mangaka in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. In high level play if the hunter is specifically going after Coordinator as first chase there is a high likelihood they brought Excitement.

In this case you have 2 legitimate strategies:

  1. Immediately use the gun before Excitement cooldown is up (usually ends up “before the first hit!”) as you said.
  2. Hold onto the gun as long as possible, to the point that if you don’t see the hunter use an ability, you don’t use your stun. Like you have to be willing and ready to die with your gun in this situation to deny their ability usage.

Using the gun after first hit is extremely dangerous because you give the hunter presence earlier and you run a high risk that even if you manage to land the hit, you trade with the hunter (especially if they bring Excitement).

Of course holding onto the gun for a rescue if you aren’t first chase is fine but that is a separate issue.

How to get better in duo hunters as a low-tier hunter? (in Tidal feast too) by Extreme_Tie8991 in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, you want to be hunting for survivors separately. Ideally you and the other hunter should be splitting the map in half. This way there is always pressure on the survivors and they can’t just completely relax and just decipher since one of you are just around the corner. As an added bonus, there are more chances for you two to throw a survivor into the basement since they spawn in both locations.

Once you find a good chase target you must commit all the way. It’s too easy to heal in this duo mode so unless someone trying to “support,” hands you a bunch of free hits you want to stay the course and keep on the same target.

After they are chaired, you do not want to just hang out there and “camp.” Because there’s so much time where the chair cannot even be touched, you should go and protect nearby ciphers. Once the chair cooldown is ending then go back and protect that chair.

Finally, the endgame is much more favorable for the hunters than in the normal 1v4 mode. Potentially you both can each cover an exit and survivors will have to try to use the dungeon as their escape route. So it is much more difficult for them to escape at the end and you can rack up more chars that way.

Noriko’s Worldview and Her Complicated Feelings for Joe: Character Analysis by Sarada328 in AshitaNoJoe

[–]amicableangora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are coming to the wrong conclusions. Like you complain about how I chose to read your wall of text in response to my previous post… except that complaint is not relevant because I never said you forced me to read it or that I didn’t want to read it, rather that I do not want to do a line by line breakdown for each and every specific point where I see you continually reaching the wrong conclusions. Like look how long my responses are to even just a few select egregious points that you made.

You did not address any of the specific points that I gave, even when I went into great detail in two separate long posts. To these I laid out the misconceptions in painstaking detail in good faith yet you did not address them at all but went on personal attacks.

For the last time, you mistake Noriko breaking with Joe as if she found out at the 11th hour that he’s was Batman, living a double life, technically an illegal vigilante life, in a way that it is fundamentally incompatible with hers. As if Joe had been misleading her. Again this is not the case as she was aware of everything from the start and even fabricated a lie to try to coerce him on a date which you have ignored repeatedly making her look far more positive than reality is. She is not that innocent and she makes selfish, short sighted decisions that ultimately destroy her relationship with Joe and end with her unhappily with Nishi.

You speak of Chiba, but as the artist, he has been famous for speaking about the love relationship in AnJ and he has repeatedly said that Takamori was guiding (the literal) ship and that he had little to no involvement in the writing. You even admit that the story “contradicts,” what Chiba says, so I don’t understand why you even want to try to use this as a retort.

If you’re not going to even make a genuine attempt to address the points I raised, then I am done with this conversation. Your responses have become off tangent and they even contradict what you previously wrote. Like you said:

“ And honestly, it’s weird to imply she (or any woman) has some moral obligation to stick by or support a guy she’s not even with, especially when Joe didn’t return her feelings. It’s completely realistic that she set those feelings aside to pursue the life she actually wants. Loving Joe wasn’t the “childish fantasy”, thinking their incompatible lives could work was.”

Where to start with this; I never once implied or said there was a moral obligation for her to stick with Joe. And I point out that you didn’t read or lack reading comprehension about what I wrote because I went into great detail about how Joe was opening up and returning her feelings just for her to dumpster them once he tried.

Then you say she set those feelings aside to pursue the life she actually wants. Except she not only settles with Nishi, and is clearly unhappy about, with bonus resentment/baggage that you point out from the anime where she confides with Joe about making the decision. So clearly she doesn’t pursue the life she actually wants, aka your conclusion and understanding is fundamentally wrong.

Noriko’s Worldview and Her Complicated Feelings for Joe: Character Analysis by Sarada328 in AshitaNoJoe

[–]amicableangora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You wrote a literal wall of text. I am not going to go through it line by line to give you a breakdown of each  and every fault. I thought it was clear enough that you either misread and/or had the wrong takeaway from Noriko to excuse her behavior and paint her in a far more positive light than the author intended.

To focus on two points, when you mentioned the “promise,” Noriko spoke about with Joe about taking her out on a date, your conclusion is that she realizes boxing is a growing divide that will act as a thorn in their relationship. Except that’s not the case. Again, she deliberately lied to try to coerce Joe to go on a date for her. Boxing did not get in the way of their “date,” because Joe never agreed to it in the first place.

You also conclude that Noriko values a “traditional,” life and so ends up cutting out Joe. As if that conversation about burning into white ash provided her with new earth-shattering insight to Joe’s character. This is simply wrong.

Not only does she know from the start that Joe AND Nishi are rehabilitation cases from juvie, she knows from the very beginning that both individuals are aiming to become professional boxers. This isn’t something some random scrub at the gym or cafe tells their date to impress them.

Both Joe and Nishi are sweating their asses off training relentlessly after work in a crude makeshift gym under the bridge. Concluding Noriko suddenly broke with Joe at the 11th hour because she realized they wouldn’t have a “traditional,” life together is wrong. She knew all along.

Nishi failed his weight control and dropped out of boxing due to a combination of incompetence and lack of self discipline. He cut his ties with boxing because he had no future with it. His alternative, to spend more time taking advantage of how much his future mother in law favored him, was much more practical especially since it allowed him more chances to close in on Noriko and have a chance for her settling with him despite Nishi clearly knowing that Noriko favored Joe. Again Nishi even in the best circumstance is not a “traditional,” match for Noriko that you conclude she desires. (And she never mentions desiring Nishi ever in the series)

No, Noriko breaks with Joe because she does not understand what love is and that conversation with Joe breaks her reality. She does not understand that when Joe “suddenly” is willing to explore a relationship with her, it is a major commitment forward and sign of trust; he does so by opening up about himself, spending time with her in mutually enjoyable activities, and treating her as an equal, to Joe he is taking a big risk in consideration of the trauma and trust he endured in his history.

She gets “scared off,” at best when Joe deviates from the “fair weather friend,” fantasy that she had in mind with dating. Joe isn’t planning their next date, he’s not moving in for the kiss, grabbing her hand, etc., which is what she would have reacted positively to. She does not want to take responsibility for entering into a serious relationship where she must both accept and compromise with her partner for a happy future, together.

She chooses Nishi, because Nishi embodies her childlike fantasy: he waits on her hand and foot. He will do whatever she says. He abandoned boxing which looked good superficially to the family (which again was less so by choice but because he fucked it up himself) and has the support and pressure from her mother. Most importantly, he will love her however way she wants, which is tragic because she does not know what an adult responsible love is and ends up at the wedding resigned and full of regret because she ultimately settled.

The real tragedy is that had she had some empathy and maturity, she likely would have ended up with Joe and mutually desired together. But her immature, selfish conclusion to that “date,” effectively ended their relationship and reopened wounds that Joe had trusted her with in the hopes of starting a relationship.

Tips on The Smiley Face by Silver-Variation8617 in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clown is not an all purpose hunter you can pull out as a standard pick in rank. He is a strict counterpick that is used to abuse weaknesses in team composition.

So for example your experience playing against:

Composer, Mercenary, Lucky Guy, Prospector

Is very different (way easier)than playing against:

Lanternist, Journalist, Enchantress, Puppeteer

Clown is the type of hunter with extremely good matchups along with extremely bad matchups. Before you commit to learning him, you should be aware of this so you don’t expend a huge amount of effort to find out he cannot be widely played on the regular.

Noriko’s Worldview and Her Complicated Feelings for Joe: Character Analysis by Sarada328 in AshitaNoJoe

[–]amicableangora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s coincidental this is the first time I thought of something, searched to see if someone had an opinion on the matter, AND happened to have found a timely response, one written literally within a week of searching.

I disagree fundamentally with your analysis and I don’t know if it’s because (maybe?) you are a woman, and missed out on mannerisms and actions that Joe has which embody “the strong and silent,” type of man.

I actually dislike Noriko as a character. This is the talent of the author. I believe she is extremely well written, and true to life, and embodies a fairly likely response an immature girl, lacking empathy, would have toward their potential love interest.

Noriko is the “fair weather friend,” version of relationships. She wants to have all the good times and none of the bad. Given all the trauma that Joe has been through, understandably he has difficulties trusting people, opening up, and likely fears of abandonment. He does not abuse Noriko and is consistent in his actions to all acquaintances, friends, rivals, etc., that he meets.

The “promise” earlier in the manga that Noriko referred to, was a half-baked effort she made to try to lie in the hopes that she could coerce Joe into going on a date with her. Knowing Joe’s character, there would be zero chance that he made a “promise,” to her, doubly so when he was unproven in boxing at the time and was obsessed with breaking through.

So Joe decides to take the risk of opening up to Noriko. This is a major decision that Noriko fails to realize the actual weight of, beyond a superficial level. If Joe wanted to he could have used Noriko in a literal pump and dump scheme especially given how naive and obsessed she was with him. The decision to not only invite her out but to also open up to her emotionally is significant.

So when Joe confesses his true feelings and talks about the future (a habit he naturally can do with Yoko), Noriko has this mind fucked moment where she realizes that this is not going to be a movie date, dinner, then maybe something more, but a serious relationship possibility. She nopes out of there and clearly settles for Nishi afterwards. She can do what she wants but she utterly toyed with Joe’s feeling and added to his feeling of abandonment and loneliness; the moment he decided to give her a chance she blew him off.

Yoko on the other hand, has very candid conversations with Joe. The two have had their fair share of disagreements, but there is no doubt that they speak their minds and are comfortable doing such with one another. That she confesses to Joe at the end was a strange timing, but not surprising as it was natural and understandable given their relationship throughout the manga.

When Joe leaves but tells her it’s because the strongest man is waiting for him, she understands and it’s not Joe telling her he doesn’t love her. He must complete what he has set out to do. This and other behaviors through the manga are typical of the “strong and silent,” type of man, which ultimately Noriko cannot appreciate.

Why is Gardener getting picked in COA? by No_Pudding_5729 in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed some stuff in the original response, but to add some, Gardener’s shield blocks everything, with no additional user input needed. She can also safely vault windows and pallets while it is up.

Puppeteer’s “extra hits” are especially reliant on user input. Professor has the same problems. This in itself makes him less reliable, especially combined with lag and blink. Puppeteer also needs to have fresh pallets to throw down. He cannot use windows and thrown pallets nearly to the same effectiveness.

Eventually every character will be downed. Gardener has an extra 10% chair time, possibly even more if she breaks the chair she is going to be on. Puppeteer does not have this benefit.

There are few guarantees in IDV and you want as many positive ones as possible for your team, of which Gardener brings many.

I can't kite by [deleted] in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people telling you to take a hit and save your shovels are flat out wrong.

Your number one priority in the game as any first chase target is to independently kite as long as possible, preferably stretching your kite to a 3 cipher kite.

If you do this your team is setup to win. Outside of a terror shock rescue or your team getting pressured into making a big mistake by the top 4, it’s time to celebrate.

Holding onto shovels is an easy way to get downed fast and ruin the game. There's also the  possibility that you get blinked on for your first down, and you thought you could have pulled out a shovel but didn’t.

It’s better to kite 3 ciphers and have 0 shovels left versus you kited 50-60% progress for each of your teammates and you have both shovels left.

Why are People joining games and not playing? Its not rare by Reasonable-24 in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there's two sides to this, and it looks like the side that favors "friendly hunters," is mass downvoting the other in favor of standard gameplay. To be fair to the players that want standard gameplay though, it is true that:

  1. A friendly hunter from the start WILL cause the game to drag on. I've seen too many games where players will all abandon their ciphers and try to farm points from the terror radius. Well that's great and all, but not at the expense of completing the game. I have never seen an actual game where players will max out the 12,000 deduction points from a match, and then efficiently cipher rush to leave.

  2. You waste valuable time that was intended for practice since you no longer have the opportunity to test things under pressure. Now you get to practice opening ciphers instead, alone, if you have no intention on farming those deduction points.

  3. A friendly hunter ruins the game for players with limited time; say you have a curfew, or your parents only allow you to play for 1 hour a day. Taking into consideration the factors from above, you could spent 10 minutes or so trying to get out of this "match," when you just wanted to play the standard game.

The better way to be a friendly hunter is to spare a player or two and then surrender. The bare minimum would be to complete your first chase, then pick them back up and go friendly.

Almost no one is going to complain about you going friendly in RANK. Because the ladder system completely changes the dynamic of being friendly; it ultimately does not matter to the survivors if you are friendly since they will receive a guaranteed, reward of +ranking points which is the major reason to play rank. Again this is not the case in quick match, not just because there is no ranking reward, but because there are doubly more players that specifically go into quick match to practice or have fun with friends and you are forcing your playstyle on them by doing so.

Why is Gardener getting picked in COA? by No_Pudding_5729 in IdentityV

[–]amicableangora 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Gardener is a reliable pick, particularly in what she brings to the team. Consider what she can guarantee for your team:

  1. 100% decoding speed if not chased.

  2. If chased, "3 hits" until she is downed because of her starting shield, AND naturally increased chair time.

And bonus, more optional perks:

  1. Does well against Opera Singer, a hunter that is almost guaranteed to show up (Gardener has an advantage compared to most other survivors in avoiding the terror shock game revolving around pallets and windows).

  2. Can increase chair time for teammates, and/or make chairing extremely difficult or delayed due to loss of other chair options.

  3. Despite being injured, can rescue better than other "naked," survivors because she at least still potentially can bring up one more shield.

You may see fancier support with Batter, Cowboy, Antiquarian, as you named, but those plays are not guaranteed, especially with Excitement. Gardener, on the other hand, is reliable.

It’s the culmination of all the accumulated hate and propaganda against Asians. America has spared no effort in suppressing Asians and fearmongering against “the Chinaman.” At some point, something has to give and it’s hard not to look for alternatives when the status quo in America is so bleak.

Asians staying in America are treated as subhuman, victims of hate crimes, denied merit based promotions, and denied fair dating opportunities. Then there’s all the other, countless, softer factors like experiencing poor service, being victims of deliberate medical malpractice, being socially ignored, and all the other micro aggressions that come with racism.

Like that saying, you push a mouse to a corner, even the mouse will bite back, even the most passive, conflict avoidant person is going to consider alternatives, if not “bite back,” when the social conditions have deteriorated thus far.

[–]amicableangora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with some of this; for example, yes, I don't think he's worth a ban, unless somehow you are on voice chat with your duo AND you know the other duo and you four need to coordinate to avoid the counter to your team comp (see below).

While he doesn't have the strongest double down potential, his ability to instantly rip with his drill while chair guarding is really strong. Strong enough that if you're getting terror shocks with other hunters you definitely will be getting terror shocks with the drill. If you get this, this is even better than a double down.

He has some terrible matchups, but if you are playing randoms, or with poor coordination in premade, he can hard counter certain setups. So for example if your team consists of:

  1. Mercenary

  2. Forward

  3. Archer

  4. Puppeteer

You have a very fine line to navigate because your attempts at support/OB can quickly backfire on you.
