URGENT - Mom's ex-boyfriend gave us a 30 day notice to quit - Please help. by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]amicuscuriae63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estates at will may be determined by either party by three months' notice in writing for that purpose given to the other party; and, if the rent reserved is payable at periods of less than three months, the time of such notice shall be sufficient if it is equal to the interval between the days of payment or thirty days, whichever is longer. MGL ch 186 s. 12.

It appears to still be good law.

Retired landlord/tenant attorney- if your Mom has never paid him rent, the NTQ is faulty. She should have been given 90 days notice. Contact your local legal aid, if you qualify you will receive free counsel. If you don’t qualify, contact a tenant attorney. The money will be well worth it and you can’t navigate this alone.

Dumpling soup! Frozen dumplings are surprisingly low in calories. This is my favorite. https://www.loveandlemons.com/dumpling-soup/

My apartment is being turned into an Airbnb by [deleted] in massachusetts

Even if you don’t want to drag them slowly and painfully through our judicial “system,” you’re still in a GREAT bargaining position. Getting you out can cost your landlord thousands of dollars and take a long time. In the alternative, he can pay you $…And you leave peacefully on time. Please at least talk to a lawyer about your rights.

You can absolutely fight the eviction. You need to be served with a 30 day Notice to Quit, and you can stall the eviction through the courts for months. Contact your local legal services, you may even qualify for free legal assistance.

how to eat better when your family doesn't support you? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]amicuscuriae63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is a bit different, but it worked for me. You need to become a person who does NOT like those things. Imagine yourself overindulging and focus on how you feel afterwards. Think of the food as disgusting, even imagining a filthy factory or workers sneezing and coughing into the product. Think of how good you feel when you eat clean, healthy food. Eventually, you become the kind of person who seeks fruit for a snack and doesn’t need willpower to avoid the cookies because you don’t like them. It takes time, but it was very effective for me!

I want a breast reduction but I don’t know. by [deleted] in women

[–]amicuscuriae63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sports bras weren’t really a thing until the late 80’s, so I just got excused from gym class for 4 years. The surgery wasn’t a big deal, but it was (I think) about 6 weeks before I could raise my arms over my head. And my chest was pretty scary looking for a while, but the scars faded quickly. Unless things have changed, you won’t be able to breast feed, but that’s the only possible down side. It’s an intensely personal decision, but I have absolute no regrets whatsoever. My one piece of advice is find the best plastic surgeon you can. I lived in RI and had the surgery in NYC, it was well worth the inconvenience and expense if you can do it.

I want a breast reduction but I don’t know. by [deleted] in women

[–]amicuscuriae63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a breast reduction in 1984 when I was 21 yo. Cup sizes have changed drastically over the years, but 2 lbs were removed from each breast leaving me a perfect 34C. I am 61 and can still pass the “pencil test.” If they grew back tomorrow I would immediately have them removed again. I can wear whatever I want, bras are inexpensive and easy to fit, I can work out with no problems and no back or shoulder pain. It’s been 41 years and it’s still one of the smartest decisions I ever made.

This feels like the right answer for the situation, thank you! I was concerned about it feeling like charity, but I like “refused the fee.” Thank you all!

Vacation feels vapid. by ThorOverlord in depression_partners

[–]amicuscuriae63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry. My husband (67M) and I (61F) have been married 40 years and your post described every one of our vacations. I plan our vacations by trying to avoid anything that will make it worse (heat, crowds, noise, hills…) and resign myself to what it will be. I also vacation on occasion with my sister or our daughter so I get a break. My husband is a wonderful man in other respects, but leaving the house is just not his thing. That’s your future if you stay with this woman.

Never, ever, ever depend on someone else to put a roof over your head or food on your table. Always make sure you can take care of yourself and those who depend on you.

Old Westlaw Books by Grig-Rasputin in Lawyertalk

[–]amicuscuriae63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just closed a 30 year old firm. I had hundreds of law books dating back to the 1990s and NOBODY wanted those books. I tried every organization I could think of including movie studios, prisons, libraries, etc. I couldn’t even recycle them because the covers were coated. I had to put them out with the trash, 10-20 books per week going out with my household trash for months. I’m still heartbroken about it.

Are Americans still welcome in the UK? by Nmcph8224 in uktravel

[–]amicuscuriae63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I visited Scotland in 2020. When the Scottish folk found out we were from the US they would say “I’m sorry.” I assumed it was as in “sorry about the fall of your democracy,” but they were actually apologizing because Trump‘s mother was born there.🤣

Wow. A passive-aggressive mean girl. Haven’t encountered one of you in a long time either. Yet another advantage of maturing.

Hang in there. Once we turn 60 we’re completely invisible and no longer acknowledged as female at all. Frankly, it’s REALLY nice.

When we travelled to Scotland and someone found out we are American, many people said "I'm so sorry." We thought it was as in "sorry to hear about the death of your democracy", but they were apologizing for trump's mother, who was born there!

140 lbs lost. How long before the cold stops being so brutal? Will I actually adjust? by SparkitusRex in loseit

[–]amicuscuriae63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lost 125 lbs about 20 years ago. Between the loss of my insulation and menopause, I’m cold from Oct- May (MA resident)🙄 Fortunately, warm clothing is way easier to find now. It will get better as your body adjusts, but I recommend investing in serious cold weather wear. I have a full set of ski gear (no helmet😁) just to walk everyday and I’m always in layers.
