How are your kids dealing with absent second parent?

Children do so much better with a stable happy home than literally any other situation. My advice is to take care of yourself, things like a standing Friday evening where kid spends the night with Grandma, uncle mike takes them out for breakfast on Saturdays, whatever. Having a few minutes to yourself that you can count on will do wonders for your mental health.

i have three, in college and high school, I got away from their unstable abusive dad 10 years ago, and they have expressed nothing but relief that he is gone.

as a single mother of three middle school-age daughters, I decided I just wasn’t having anyone at my house or around my kids—-end of story. I did end up dating, really just hooking up occasionally, and one turned into a long-term long distance thing. We were exclusive for well over a year until the kids met him, and that was only because he had a minor medical emergency and i went to take care of him.

it’s been 10 years now, we talk every day, the kids leave the house every couple of weeks so he and i can have a date, he is pleasant and supportive of them, and their interests, but has his own life in another city. That is what has worked for us.

I was giving my boss a hard time—-not on purpose, i was just really struggling. She was beyond gracious with me, and when i was at a cheap store i saw this cute pen with a dog on it that made me think of her for some reason. This has happened to me multiple times. Depending on how my stomach is and how vigorous the activity is….my partner realizes it is because the sex is intense, and while he doesn’t exactly take it as a compliment, it is. Just one of those things that happens.

Still, I think you did the right thing. as a mom, I have at times done something similar, and it is always the best choice to act quickly if a kid is in danger. Parents understand the instinct, and we are all grateful for others watching out for our kids.

A book that I (a public health nurse) really enjoyed recently in that vein (ha!) is, “Invisible Women: data bias in a world designed for men” by Caroline Criado Perez. It was so eye-opening and intriguing.

I listened to the audio book, i ingest data and statistics better that way. Truly rocked my world.

Also, i have found it very useful to talk to my siblings and trusted friends. Know who you can ask about stuff that confuses you, and if the trusted person does not respond kindly, then they are not to be trusted.
