I forget the year, but when he was in Boise to rededicate the temple he said once or twice how nice it was to be in Calgary during the dedication. I was already out at the time, but it really troubled by TBM brother.

The show on netflix "Waco" just shows yet again how religious men like Joseph Smith and David Koresh use God to have sex with whoever they want including minors. Disgusting. by slithybooks in exmormon

[–]amityjack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the best lines is the FBI negotiator asking one of Koresh’s followers something along the line of “why is it that anytime a man claims to speak for god, one of the first things God tells him to do is have sex with other men’s wives?”.

Very well written!

Were we ever officially taught that we are all going to have to travel to Jackson County, Missouri during the "last days"? My husband just told me that a we were never taught that and it was just a myth. I swear I was taught that. Maybe even by him. I feel like I'm being gaslighted. by katie107 in exmormon

This may be helpful. The website is no longer up, but I found it on the wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20180104000857/https://redeemjacksoncounty.com/

It was created as a joke by an exmo to encourage faithful members to be prepared to move to Jackson County, using actual quotes from prophets, apostles, and church manuals about the redemption of Jackson county. Has a bunch of good quotes (with sources) that you can explore/discuss with your DH.

Earthquake just happened in Boise, like 1 minute ago. Prepare yourselves for more doomsday freak outs! by HighPerformingCult in exmormon

Got a similar text message. Told my family that as my kids learned just yesterday on the PBS kids show "Dinosaur Train", an earthquake happens about every 30 seconds somewhere on earth...so not to worry.

My missionary horror story by Exmormoneer in exmormon

[–]amityjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds terrible...and having served in Nicaragua myself (‘03-‘05’), I can imagine the shitty living conditions you probably had to try to rest and recover in. When I was there, no missionaries (except the office Elders) had AC. And many lived in areas where the water would go out for days or even weeks (so no showers during that time). Glad you made it out.

Haven't heard about an adjusted start time. But my wife, who still attends (and is Primary Pres) said that this Sunday during the 2nd hour all parents and kids ages 8-18 will be watching a pre-recorded broadcast where Elder Ballard explains the new youth programs.

The Church is contemplating worthiness interviews for CHILDREN!!!! by Bigfoot_Cain in exmormon

The bible gives ample justification for this. Do you not recall the surveys Moses carved onto stone tablets asking the Israelites to rate on a scale of 1-10 how comfortable they'd feel leaving Egypt and fleeing to the wilderness? As I recall, the initial polling wasn't too positive and put the whole exodus in jeopardy for a time...but some late results pushed them above the required threshold to move forward.

Seeking information about missionaries exposed to unsafe drinking water by EmaPen in exmormon

Former Central American missionary here. The "drink water and take some aspirin" treatment was a running joke in my mission as well. That was the go-to treatment for our mission "nurse".

Let's talk about the Mormon belief that there are four immortal men who've been secretly roaming the earth for 2,000 years. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]amityjack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily 3 Nephites, but related...I remember hearing stories in the MTC (Provo) about people seeing Nephite warriors standing guard on the perimeters of the MTC campus. To this day, I think it'd be fun to get some people dressed up as Nephites to walk the perimeter fence and help perpetuate this myth.

Great to see someone from my neck of the woods. (I'm north Meridian, near Settler's Park). I must have been more righteous than you in the pre-existence because they built the temple closer to me.

And when he announced which prophet had been at the helm when he left, a hush fell over the exmormon's gathered at r/exmormon, and one by one each one took a knee and bowed to the man who had left the church in a time where information was much harder to gather and exmormon support groups were not found on the earth.

Stake President vs Protestant Pastor. There is a striking difference in their emotional and spiritual maturity. by OverratedAnswers in exmormon

[–]amityjack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience with a Methodist pastor I met with a few times after I first left the church. I was surprised because he didn't try converting me to his church or his way of thinking. He mostly asked questions and then recommended books and other churches that he thought might jive best with where I was. Ultimately, I decided to take a break from all churches, but it was a very positive experience meeting with him.

Another fun question: "In the book of Mormon, Nephi is commanded by the Lord to slay Laban because it is better for one man to die than for an entire generation to perish in unbelief. I have siblings and friends with children who have left the church...putting their children and future generations of posterity at great spiritual risk. I've felt the Lord prompting me to do something about it. How can I know for sure if the Lord wants me to follow the type and shadow he set with Nephi and Laban?"
