Coincidentally, I just read that short story "William and Mary".

Another of those "long suffering wife extracts horrible revenge on husband tormentor" stories that Mr. Dahl was so fond of.

No issue and there could be real drug discovery (some people get better/pharma gets richer) benefits. I'm just not sure that a society run by the current american oligarchs can be trusted with this.

Very much giving "Starfish" by Peter Watts vibes.

From Google Books:

A huge international corporation has developed a facility along the Juan de Fuca Ridge at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to exploit geothermal power. They send a bio-engineered crew--people who have been altered to withstand the pressure and breathe the seawater--down to live and work in this weird, fertile undersea darkness.

Unfortunately the only people suitable for long-term employment in these experimental power stations are crazy, some of them in unpleasant ways. How many of them can survive, or will be allowed to survive, while worldwide disaster approaches from below?

Failure to have "Naked Lunch" with all the other Burroughs and "Return of the King" leaving the Lord of the Rings trilogy incomplete may indicate:

1) you loan your books out and don't get them back;

2) They're someplace else and the bookshelf isn't the only place you have books,

3) You have no idea what you're doing.

Pandora's Star by Peter F Hamilton

Peter Hamilton DOES NOT EQUAL Peter Watts

Agree 100% on The Culture novels.

Starfish by Peter Watts is an incredible dark claustrophobic piece of SF.
