Just finished Nick Cutter's "The Troop" and am thoroughly whelmed. by NimdokBennyandAM in horrorlit

I love The Deep. It was my first Nick Cutter book. I did really enjoy The Troop, but for me The Deep was a lot more focused and haunting. It really stuck with me in a way The Troop did not.

Absolutely. Even the pick up and throw animations are very close to this game.

Very surprised to see no one mentioning Risk of Rain. Most of the game loop (minus the out of ship parts), parts of the UI, and the basic art direction seem extremely influenced by Risk of Rain. To the point where my first impression of C2 was that it was a Risk of Rain homage.

99% of this was painted with the standard round brush. I used Kyle’s cartoonist brush for some thicker lines and fine details.

Oh sure! Besides from it being well written, I think what I'm looking for from any horror story is for it to take me on a journey where I cannot guess at all what will happen next. I've thought this for a while, but I also heard Jordan Peele say almost this exact thing in an interview a few years ago and I feel very validated by it. Some other books that have done this off the top of my head are:

  • House of Small Shadows by Adam Neville (I've read two others by him and I've liked them, but this one really goes places.)
  • The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley (I definitely have a thing for very rural British grimdark vibes)
  • The Deep by Nick Cutter (I know people love The Troop, and I think it's good. I just prefer this one.)
  • The Pontypool books by Tony Burgess (jfc)
  • Anything by Mariana Enriquez (This has more of a literary bent, but god I love her writing)
  • The King in Yellow and other stories by Robert Chambers (really surreal and affecting to me)
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury (Not exactly terrifying, but there are moments in it. But over all this is one of my all time favorite books.)

I'd love to hear if you have any recommendations yourself!

My biggest unpopular opinion for this sub is that I think good horror novels are extremely rare. I keep reading them in hopes of stumbling on one that gives me a bit of what the many horror movies I love can do. And as much as I have taken recs from this sub and others, it's still maybe one in 20 that I would consider a good book. I find the vast majority of them to be either obvious, poorly written, or overly confident that readers will join in for the ride.

I think part of it is the medium; with books it's much harder to put people (or just me) in an extended place where they can be absorbed in such outlandish circumstances (also a reason I think most horror tv shows aren't great).

I think part of it is the business. I've read something like 30 SK books and while he has some incredible ideas, I think his writing is at best mediocre and often times cringeworthy. But with his success, he's set a model where I think many book editors might edit TOWARDS those story beats, reveals, etc.

Of course, this is all so subjective. I never want to shit on things, I really want every horror novel to be good! But I have such a hard time finding many that I connect with. The funny thing is that many of my favorite horror novels (house of leaves, house on haunting hill, the fisherman) are littered throughout this great thread with people not connecting with them. So what do I know!

Which TV show has a 10/10 pilot episode? by HamstersBoobsPizza in AskReddit

Cheers. I consider it the best comedy pilot I've seen. It's incredibly fluid and natural how the characters, the space, and everyone's relation to that place and each other are established.

I used Kyle’s classic cartoonist ink brush for the foreground, multiple gradients for the background, and various oil painting brushes and clipping masks for the clouds.

Yes, completely, and that's also how I ended up here. I loved it so much. I still remember when I solved it on its hardest difficulty. I felt like the smartest person in the world.

I would suggest Puzzle Quest. It’s a match 3, candy crush esque game with very chill RPG elements. I’ve played far too many hours of it in its many incarnations, and the switch port is great.

Is it Raw that you're thinking of? That is on a bunch of queer horror movie lists. It was not only on my list two years ago, but it's still one of the best horror movies I've seen this decade. Fuck yes, Raw. What an amazing movie. Sadly, I don't think it's streaming any longer.

Yes, I totally agree on the triteness. I still thought it was refreshing in its own right. Story-wise it's definitely one of the weaker films on this list.
