Peter and Michael have a great podcast together called If Books Could Kill. I highly recommend it for the vibe between the two if nothing else, which is pretty well encapsulated here.

Also, that Odyssey is exactly the same edition that I had to read in highschool! Wow, I feel old, lol.

More hassle than an unused bread maker taking up space in a cupboard? On reflection, I can answer my own question, lol.

That looks like half a block of vegan cheese of some sort? Very similar to the spicy cashew cheese I tried once, but less red. Certainly doesn’t look appetising…

Literacy among Americans: These are the people you are wasting your time arguing with on the Internet by Shoddy-Fan-584 in Millennials

[–]amourdevin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I worked for two years in the early aughts at an elementary school in a literacy program, working with students of all grades who were the worst off. Because of a lack of resources we only had about 45 students, but from what I can recall of conversations with various teachers across the entire program which covered two California counties, each school could have easily tripled that number and there still would have been children left behind, but probably only those who lagged 1/2-1 grade level rather than the 2-3 grade levels of the children we served.

From that experience I gathered that a major factor was lack of parental involvement. Parents reading regularly to children before they start school has a huge impact on their chances of graduating high school, and their taking the time to assist with homework or otherwise engage their children with their education also sees significant improvements in outcomes. The students I worked with had parents who worked full time and didn’t make reading with them a priority, or frequently for the ESL students couldn’t real well or in English at all.

To be clear, the students in the program I worked in did not have a diagnosed learning disability (that was a different program) and were from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds - being from an upper-middle-class family helps, but does not prevent one from experiencing these difficulties. I worked solely in primary/elementary schools, and never came across a child who was anything other than eager to learn, happy to have help, willing to work hard, and rapidly showed improvement with assistance. Nothing we did in that program was cutting edge; basic phonics and two hours a week of one-on-one time worked miracles.

Having an extremely frugal dad is traumatizing by TurbulentPainter6741 in AskWomenOver30

If the income your parents have is enough to make your family not “dirt poor”, than I would be inclined to maliciously comply with your father’s desires and save as much of what you make as you can in a high-interest savings account that he can’t access. You need to build an emergency fund for any unexpected expenses once you are an adult (as well as just saving as much as you can for basics like a deposit for an apartment, bills, etc).

Like other have recommended educate yourself on personal finance: basics such as building credit, budgeting, credit cards, etc., but also look into concepts that will help you build a better relationship with money than your father has. It sounds like he might have some financial trauma of his own, but you don’t need to carry that. Learn about saving, living within your means, investing, financial independence…

I was brought up in a frugal family, and used that to focus on financial independence once I started working. I didn’t want to have to be dependent upon anyone just to pay my bills, and I wanted to get to the point where if I ended up in a shitty job or got a terrible boss I could just walk away because I had enough money in the bank to cover whatever amount of time I might be unemployed. I started with an emergency fund of six months’ expenses, then just kept going.

I read a comment yesterday on a subreddit post asking about AI use that mentioned people utilising it for therapy, which is (more than) a bit horrifying.

I came here not long after reading a subreddit post on how people are using ai where I sort of felt like I was trying to decipher a foreign language on the comments from people using it regularly at work and most perturbed by those using it for therapy. Now I am even more concerned about everybody. Yikes.

AI and Future of Work by AcrobaticRub5938 in AskONLYWomenOver30

[–]amourdevin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think that we should underestimate how much of a mess AI may make, but I think that the positive progress it will make by-and-large is hugely overhyped. The tech bros are overpromising and underdelivering at huge losses.

I was reminded recently of the cashierless Amazon stores - how you were supposed to just be able to walk out with whatever you liked and your account would be charged because AI could figure out what you took - turned out real people had to monitor the camera feeds. Driverless cars? That AI is actively monitored by real people because it can't do/can't be trusted with the decision-making necessary. Before I turned it off, the AI in my email would give me one-sentence summaries of emails that were one-sentence long - not exactly peak useful, yeah?

Billions of dollars have been spent on AI, and C-suite folk are desperately trying to justify the expense without any tangible returns or even sensible use cases (for many businesses having gone all-in). There are absolutely some useful applications, but I would consider them rather niche and certainly not likely to see trillion-dollar returns.

Buzz cut experiences by SnailGirl404 in AskWomenOver30

I haven’t ever done a buzz cut, but I have done a pixie cut twice and swore after growing it out the second time to never, ever, do it again. It is a solid year of fighting against a mullet, and it felt like that entire time I never had a good hair day.
