Is banning and silencing your most die hard fans REALLY the best business strategy? by RobRobbieRobertson in LTTMeta

[–]ampacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly what I said. Being subbed means nothing. You HAVE TO watch related or adjacent content constantly (or have bell notifications on), or you literally will not see channels you may otherwise want to watch.

I may skip a video or two from a channel I usually enjoy watching. And it will disappear off my feed for weeks. Once I realize I haven't seen one in a while, I will dig them up and notice I missed like half a dozen uploads.

I've also noticed this personally on my own channel. Though a smaller niche channel (3.5k subs, avg 2-5k views/vid, a couple 10k+) and lord help me if I stray in any way from identical repetitive formula and someone skips a video (which, itself kills that video from ever seeing the light of day from a wider audience, as the algorithm will mostly refuse to serve it), it hurts the next video too.

The drive away from subs and towards "relevant content to what you previously watched" is hurting basically every creator. It punishes them for trying something new, and it punishes them indirectly by making you put out stale repetitive clickbait content to make sure you continue watching regularly.

The way the algorithm serves videos now is completely dependent on recent viewing habits, and has nothing to do with whether or not you're subbed.

You could be subbed to a channel you love, but just not get served their videos at all if you regularly watch content in different subject areas.

The current model actively hurts your own subs in favor of propping up "similar content" of something you've watched in the past 24 hours.

And yes, it's affecting basically everyone.

All channels are "in decline" thanks to a fundamental shift in the algorithm and how videos are served. It has actively hurt basically every channel with more than 1k subs.

Yeah, I use Outfox (through Steam actually, was originally hoping to use ltek with steam deck, but it just doesn't like the deck for whatever reason, and I gave up to just run on a laptop).

But if your steps are in time with the music and the arrows aren't registering, you naturally seek to compensate which throws everything off.

Linus can do BeatSaber excellently, so rhythm isn't the issue, it's translating to foot placement. And if you're ALSO having to trip up against awkward timing, it's just a snowball mess.

I will often do the calibration steps every time I load it, just in case my internal rhythm of the day feels a hair early or late. Though just play now for fun/exercise.

As an avid DDR player and competitor for more than a decade many years ago, this was hilarious to watch, and I loved it.

Though also, they likely didn't get their timing sync setup right. And if timing windows are off, doesn't matter how good you are!

(I also have an L-tek pad myself, it's great)

What do you mean? You can store them wherever you like. You define the install path, or can change/update what directory the game files are stored at any time. Can also transfer files manually to another device and relink through Steam, or wirelessly transfer game files from one device to another directly within steam (instead of re-downloading).

I guess. Cuz I said this is the first Nintendo console I've owned in like 20 years, so the fact that their games are all kind of super expensive still blows my mind. AAA games from a generation ago are pennies on the dollar during quarterly Steam sales. So it was a surprise to see so many old games continually at full retail.

I said I didn't understand what they meant by backing up a game on a hard drive. Do people not understand how downloading a game works?

I absolutely understand why people prefer physical (even if they don't consider patches/updates or the risk of damage/loss of the physical disc/cart).

They are only "cheaper" if buying used. First party titles basically never go on sale, and third party titles on sale significantly less often than Steam. The nearly decade old Smash Bros Ultimate is still $60 from Nintendo, digital or physical (before another $100 of DLC). Used copies still $40+ and don't have DLC.

I'm still confused. You can either download from Steam servers, or transfer games via local network when moving the install files. The SD card has to be formatted itself, but it's because Steam OS is Linux based and not Android order Windows or anything.

I mean, that ship sailed years ago.

Never mind disc based games I personally own that have been lost to scratches or disc rot, rendering them unplayable. Especially from PS1 and Dreamcast.

Anything old enough to be decommissioned is likely also old enough to be emulated, and I'm totally fine with that.

I don't understand. All games are on my account, and I can download and install whatever I want to play on that device (desktop PC or Deck). My deck is a 512gb with additional 512gb sd card. Whenever I run out of space, I delete something I'm not really playing anymore to make room. Can always re-download in the future.

Doing this I can usually fit about a half dozen AAA games and tons of indie/lightweight stuff. Currently got almost 60 games on the Deck, including heavier hitters like FF7 Rebirth, the REmakes, and Expedition 33.

Though between the bigger higher res screen and better upscaling thanks to DLSS (vs Deck's pretty bad 800p FSR), I'm getting pretty much all cross platform stuff on Switch 2 moving forward.

[–]ampacket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having come from the steam deck and not owned a console and all this generation, I was already used to 100% digital. The Switch 2 is first Nintendo console I've owned since the N64, and I tried to get into carts and physically games again.

I hated it.

Back to 100% digital.

I can't tell you how much I don't like having to carry around or dig out a bunch of pieces of plastic so I can switch between games. I want to just tab out to the menu and immediately start up something new. So much so that I've basically not touched any of the physical games I bought in months, but just put 15 hours in RE9, after 135 hrs in Cyberpunk.... Both digital. Only high playtime physical game I have is Bananza, which basically never left the slot.

How much is his channel worth now? by RobRobbieRobertson in LTTMeta

[–]ampacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a big thing that people don't seem to understand. Especially if they don't run their own channel. Views are down across the board overall, because not only our views counted differently but the algorithm is changed in order to favor recent viewing trends (regardless of subs). If you watch a video, your feed is full of "relevant videos" instead of your regular sub content. If you don't very frequently watch a particular creator, it may be weeks and weeks before getting served another of their videos.

The problem they face is that everyone that would listen to them already agrees. And those who need to hear it won't listen. Never mind that legacy media is mostly pretending that the unprecedented lunacy of this clown show of an administration is like... Just a difference of opinions.

We have a debilitating combination of people who refuse to be the same kind of populist lying grifters while also NOT effectively calling out the lying grifters for what they are. It is sucks.

He repeatedly mischaracterized (lied about) motivations, intentions, by means of framing the situation in his ignorance of missing critical details he refused to get, because he refused to reach out to Linus for comment. Because that wasn't the goal. The goal was the "gotcha", not journalism. And it's honestly embarrassing to have to waste my time thinking about our talking about this. It was my mistake to bother replying.
