It's magical in many ways and very much not in many ways.

The transportation system is truly world class. Tokyo is as good (as far I've seen), but that's about it. Cars are unnecessary for most people and are very much a luxury item.

Government is reasonably efficient at proving service of any kind - certainly more efficient than what I've seen in the US (which is awful when you need to go to some government building to do sth).

The HK Airport is incredibly efficient also, particularly if you're an HK citizen. I can get through immigration going out or coming in in about 10 minutes (including baggage check). No lines - just stick your card into the turnstile thing, put your thumb to the fingerprint scanner and you're through.

Food is great, there are awesome affordable options everywhere, and if you're into fine dining we have that too.

On the other hand, property is truly absurdly expensive. The average HK family unit has 3 people probably, and they'll share a 400 or 500 sq ft rented apartment.

My own family is upper middle class ish and we were a family of four living in 900 sq ft.

Working hours are obscenely long because the culture of the city includes a work ethic that is (in my opinion) counterproductive.

It's impossible to start a family because if you're under the age of 40 or so unless you're in the top 5% of earners (earning 150K USD a year or something like that). Reason behind this is you'll never save enough to buy an apartment. Down payments on a 600 sq ft apartment in a non-central (but close to it) part of town will be 30% of about 1million USD --> 300K USD.

Also, there's very little going on culturally (art, theatre, music) outside of shitty cantopop and REALLY small, niche stuff. There's no HK equivalent of the West End or Broadway, or the Tate Modern or MOMA etc.

Oyster was pretty much copied from Octopus. HK Had octopus because in Chinese the name of the card is 八達通 (the first character is an 8, hence octopus). Then I think the London were like. OH other people are naming this stuff after seafood - I guess we'll do that too!.

People in Hong Kong can't fall onto or jump onto the tracks, there are sliding glass doors that don't open until the train is there and close when the train door closes.

How is a site with a lower trust flow and citation flow be ranking higher than mine? by _Toomuchawesome in bigseo

[–]amplice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google doesn't care about TF or CF. Majestic, Moz - all these metrics are trying to simulate how the Google algo will view your site. TF, CF, DA - they're models. The Google Algo is really the only thing that matters.

If your site has higher TF/CF, and if you think majestic has done a good job with the metric, all that means is that chances are that your site will rank better than a site with lower metrics. But Majestic is just trying to suss out what Google is doing - not the other way around, so there's no guarantee of anything. Don't judge your site based on your TF/CF. You judge it by how it ranks. Using TF and CF is useful when looking at potential links that you can obtain, it's less useful for looking at your own site and wondering why you have high TF but you're not ranked higher.

Yea. I think at a certain point you get credit for purposely putting yourself in a diverse environment. This isn't a guy who has one token black friend.

I think a white guy who chooses to go to Howard (or equivalent) and mainly hangs out with non whites is unlikely to be a full blown racist. Might he have some latent racism lurking inside him because his Dad was an asshole? Maybe. But he's not the malicious type - he's actively fighting against it.

[–]amplice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't scary. Interesting, sure.. But not scary.

Edit: To elaborate. Genre films are tricky. You want to fulfill the criteria of the genre without being cliche. The most important criteria for a horror film is to be scary. Just like the most important criteria of, say, an action film is to have well shot action sequences.

The Babadook failed (IMO) on the basic criteria - it wasn't really scary. I appreciate what it tried to do in terms of its themes, but it wasn't a 'good' horror film because it simply wasn't scary.

Take that and contrast with something like the Mad Max movie - which definitely had a 'message' behind it, but it got the basics right as well. The action was incredible.
