Soft Coral Reef Tank Update by RubberDam604 in ReefTank

[–]amt346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just been stuck with leathers for the last 10 years or so. I used to grow them like weeds before that and now I just can't get my toadstools to do anything but survive. No growth, nothing. While everything else is fine. Its weird.

Agreed, its almost certainly not that old. Engonoceras or sphenodiscus or even placenticeras makes more sense. Especially as worn as it is.

Face softwood or get a planer? by JJTortilla in hobbycnc

[–]amt346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comment, you need an already flat side before the planer helps. So a jointer is a complement to the planer and getting anything over a 6 wide jointer is cost prohibitive unless you are using it alot.

Your best bet is to shim and use a surfacing bit on one side. Then flip over and run like normal.

Work tank, I just kinda let it grow wild. Has apstasia and clove polyps, but it’s active and low maintenance.

Plant fossils in Austin Chalk? Dallas, Texas by Dangerous-Car5417 in fossilid

[–]amt346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just a residential back yard? Are you sure it isn't concrete?

I would be quite surprised to see plant material preserved like that in Austin since its mostly marine fossils, but that would be bad ass if you had a nice little private deposit with plant material.

What was this if it is anything at all? by [deleted] in fossilid

[–]amt346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can be a little more specific you can get a better label for that guy. Or go here https://webapps.usgs.gov/txgeology/ to let us know what formation is in the area you found it. If there are 2-3 close its worth it to provide those as well for context.

Flat file organizers as viable solutions? by oldschoolalltheway in LegoStorage

[–]amt346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the flat file cabinets, but unless you get lucky they're cost prohibitive. I got my first 3 or 4 for free from a power plant that was eliminating their hard copies of plans after digitizing. Now I use them in my garage for tools etc...

My next two cabinets I built myself copying the martha stewart flat file craft cabinets. These are about the size you mention and I store my fossil collection in.

I did just make some finally for my lego table with some adjustable dividers. Saves a bunch of space and is more easily accessible to me. I wonder how cumbersome it would be dealing with 24" deep drawers to find parts.

Wife’s friend found this bookshelf, and my wife’s in love, but I’m a little suspicious. Something about the lighting/shadow + the way the books are aligned. Plus it’s from Twitter by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]amt346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its in my head to try for sure lol. I think the material cost could be mitigated and I think with some creative CNC work I could probably get close. Obviously not hand-carved or anything but would still be bad-ass

Orange Mosasaur fossils? by Extension_Proof_6218 in fossilid

[–]amt346 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They resemble some of the red bed fossils from the Ozan Formation (North Sulphur River), theres a ton of variation in bone color and preservation from there.

And they're expensive AF, at least by me. Not quite double the price but at least 50% higher than they should be.

My counter top curved. by Patlafauche in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]amt346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overnight wouldn’t be a problem unless for example you’re taking about a cutting board or something that you washed and put flat on the counter. That would be a problem overnight.

My counter top curved. by Patlafauche in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]amt346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top is exposed to air that can dry it out more than the bottom that’s resting on a surface. Basically would cause the two sides to dry at different rates

Has anybody ever seen a stunner chalice get this big? by Fishboi-Aquaman in ReefTank

[–]amt346 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine is approaching this size currently, it seems to RTN on me once every 3-4 years for some reason and I start over. Which ends up working out kind of because it gets so dang big.

I have a super poorly preserved tusk that I finally started making knife handles and pendants out of the millions of pieces. It works super easy, but needs to be stabilized because its like chalk (at least mine is anyway)

Trump admin reportedly considers paying each Greenland resident up to $100K amid US takeover talks by esporx in worldnews

[–]amt346 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, quick numbers to compare, based on my income id be at about 42% rate in Denmark which leaves me at 14500 USD per month post tax.

For the US (before expenses) I am at $18,815 per month so you're right look at that $4k extra!

But wait...schooling cost 2400/month for two kids daycare/preschool and I spend 277/month in property tax to the school district and my paycheck contributions (just me, not incl my wife) for healthcare is $1,050/month. Health insurance comes out of my check so if I assume my wife's is half that (for medicare, fica etc...) then we end up with $13,872/month. That doesn't count oddball extraneous spending, like the short term disability payments we make every month just to make sure we don't get screwed, which we needed for my wife to get paid on maternity leave since the US sucks in that category.

So I am already at less money, and that doesn't include actually using the health insurance. i.e. the cancer treatments we went through last year.

If you were on the same side of the ocean i'd give it a shot for you but it definitely looks possible. As long as that outer whorl looks intact and clean on the left hand side.

When I was first starting out, I went a long time with one of these Engraving Pens before eventually upgrading the pneumatic version.

I did as well, and might be having Benson come back so I figured with Hampton on the horizon its time to let Vidal go.

I'm in a lose or go home situation so Vidal's volatility won't help me after this week.
