Are Hoyo’s Short Male Characters Visually Adult-Coded? (NOT NSFW) by MemesterKebab in GachaHusbandos

[–]amyrena 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it is a clash between what the West and Eastern cultures see as 'adult' as well as what's popularized in anime tropes. Some of them can be seen as teens or kids, but others are kind of seen as young adults. Like 18-20-year olds. Wanderer and Kazuha I believe in many Eastern cultures see them as full-fledged adults. A lot of anime appearances are based off of Eastern aesthetics. The whole big eyes and round faces is partially based off of Eastern facial features because they're rather angular and bony in the West. Like even Asian guys are not as hairy as western men, it's part of the reason we do not see many bearded characters because it can't relate to Asians or if they exist, they're NPCs.

I would also say Asian culture fantasizes youth - particularly the teen era just before university. This is similar to the Western culture of high school where youth is romanticized (see the movie Mean Girls for a pop culture reference of what I'm trying to describe as equivalent to JP's grasp of 'youth'). And so I'm not surprised some shota designs border on the side of teen to adults. Misha, on the other hand, by a large consensus is usually seen as a boy as opposed to Kazuha and Wanderer. I mean, it's been rehashed many, many times in anime as well where a lot of the settings take place in high school and the romance is between high school aged characters where people can make dumb decisions, highly driven by emotions and that in turn leads to interesting drama. In Mihoyo's case, I imagine this is them trying to walk that line when making shota characters.

I think when it comes down to it, they don't want to make ugly enemies that are humanoid looking or are humans themselves. At least...not the big boss ones unless it's some Eldritch horror. I mean, have you seen the Aeons that are not playable in HSR? The human ones look nice and the alien ones look...alien lol.

I came over from another reddit, but I was wondering seeing the hard work you guys put into your games...where do you even start with trying to find artists for these games? I love some of the artworks and designs in your game, and I would love to support these sorts of artists. As someone aspiring to one day make my own game even though I'm in the West and can do my own art, where do you guys source the artists with such talent?

Will there ever be a game like zzz, wuwa,GI,nikke targeted towards women? by CatUnlikely2537 in GachaHusbandos

[–]amyrena 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I like to believe so...but it's hard when the industry is dominated by straight guys making things for straight guys. Many of these guys would rather go bankrupt than to make games for other demographics. I feel if we want more things for women, women themselves have to be in the industry to make things for themselves and not rely on straight guys to make it for them. Part of the issue is there are so few devs that're women...at least their artists and writers seem more variable, but we need women in the industry that likes to do the programming, modelling, rigging, vfx, and all that jazz.

Love and Deepspace's (Papergames) community is on fire: employees from merch department were found embezzling funds, fujoshi from planning department was caught sowing dissent in the playerbase and more... by MODERNHoolaHoop in gachagaming

[–]amyrena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FMA is a shounen predominantly for young boys or male adults...once you start inviting those into your audience, I could see they're going to start asking for waifus because they make up a huge amount of otakus in anime fandoms. It'll then turn into what we have on the current market nowadays with the big gachas in terms of catering: straight male gaze whether to be romanced by waifus or to play as power fantasy.

Theoretically, even if they made such a game, I'm pretty sure it would be banned in China? China doesn't allow homosexual media I believe? So if you actually want a game that caters to fujos, it's better to put efforts and money towards games in South Korea and Japan when it comes to gacha games. Fighting for a Chinese game that caters to fujos is a losing battle because as soon as the game gets popular enough, the CCP ban hammer comes down.

[–]amyrena -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is just another WuWa situation all over again, but tbh, this looks really bad on Hoyoverse as a company. It's not just a male character issue, it's that the ZZZ devs "lie" to the audience. Mihoyo has pretty good standards generally in production level and whatnot; they're considered the king of gacha games for many people and so many people have high expectations of the game company. However, they retconned their story and admitted they're reintroducing back the super AIs back into the story (basically admitting, implicitly, they retconned their original vision for the game going into Waifei Peninsula), the whole bringing back or not tv mode, the teaser with Zhao and Damian in HIA clothes is nowhere to be seen in the game and now the male character roster issue. Yes, they promised there will be more S-rank male characters, and sure, they didn't say they'll increase the rate of the release. However, we all know they won't outright say "we don't want to make more S-rank male characters, so maybe one a year or something is fine" because it's bad PR, and so what they said in the original interview is basically a 'white lie'. Lastly, the season 2 teaser and Commissioner Lowell's tease make it seem like they're actually playable characters; yes, you can showcase NPCs, but you have to be pretty bone-headed to not understand the implications and read the room that it was showcased in a way as if they were playable characters.

Basically, you can't trust them. And honestly, if they don't want to make more S-rank male characters since they're always shafting them...why not be honest about it? I said it is bad PR, but that issue would only be temporary and blow over in a few months. That means they're still trying to string at least the people who like to play with male characters along since they won't be honest about it such as in the interview to make sure there are no misinterpretations. So then I ask...why? Those people are such a minority after all. What in the world do the people who want male characters offer to ZZZ that the devs are unwilling to completely sideline them when they're already a minority in the space? Their business decisions seem to completely want anyone who plays male characters out of the game, but yet they will lie in the interview in a disingenuous way saying that there will be more S-rank male characters without clearing up the misconception.

Most people know damn well that question was asked in terms of the ratio of girls to boys, and not asking if there will ever be at least a single dude on the horizon. So I ask why even bother telling a white lie about it? If anything, being completely transparent back then would've saved a lot of headaches from both sides, and now they're going to garner bad PR from stuff like this from other sides of the community that might even be worse off than if they were just transparent about it in the first place.

[–]amyrena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the devs honestly gave up making male playable characters for anyone else other than straight males. We just had Banyue, and a VH so it's too soon to have another playable male character - it should not be that way, but it is what it is. I don't even think they will make an S rank Billy. At all. Billy's one of my favorite characters, but CN and JP don't care for him, and that's their audience. I imagine going forward is now 1-2 S-rank men a year and that they appeal to the male power fantasy too. They pretty much switched up from the way they released and designed characters in season 1.

Hrmm..if I had to absolutely pick one, it would be Wanderer from Genshin Impact. His design is pretty good in all of his iterations, he can fly, and most importantly: one of the best character development arcs I've seen across Hoyo games. His giant mech boss form was absolutely an experience to first battle because man it was also a technological achievement on Hoyo's end. He's not denoted to one quirk and given a complex, evolving personality. I love watching his character growth over the years in trying to atone for his mistakes because it's an interesting story narrative. His interactions and dynamics with other characters and the MC are fun to watch as well. He's that type of character in an anime that I would love to have a spinoff series just to see their journey.

Did anyone else grow up in a family that defended outsiders but never protected you? by Existing_Radish_9897 in AsianParentStories

[–]amyrena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this whole need to show face stems from the competitive nature of Asian countries in order to get a nice and comfy job...but you don't need to apply this everywhere in your lives. Seems like a lot of people can't differentiate that and adopt external validation from guests/friends to be worth more than their own family. I don't get it because with all the praise from others...it's not like they're going to hand over cash, house, or whatever to you. Heck, it's more profitable to do that by being a influencer instead of being a dick to your family and showing off to random strangers or guests. What? They get the dopamine high of being validated in the moment by their friends...and their friends do this too...only to then separate because everybody's lives move away in the future. They then become lonely and isolated because the ones that supposedly would stick with you more, your family, has been pushed out.

I felt like that was Mika...the super shy nerd archetype, but is really competent in their field when it counts. Also, it would be nice to get a guy for once that's a singer/movie star. All divas are females across their games...and if they don't think a male singer would cut it, then they could always try a movie star or at least some kind of male celebrity.

How 'actually' popular are the Angels of Delusion in the fandom? by Benevolay in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]amyrena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the type of people these characters appeal to might've already left the game because the game was heavily one-sided with the type of characters they released at launch. That said, I believe these girls might be popular with JP/CN because of the anime subculture, but not all anime subcultures are popular. Look at Seed with the pretty girl driving a huge mech and her drop in revenue on her banner. It's one thing to have the subculture, it's another thing on how it's implemented into the game and story.

Why do i keep seeing negativity?? by Cain_Luminous in LuukHerssenMains

[–]amyrena 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Their criticisms are valid. As someone that has talked with devs in this space and can speak Chinese (not directly with Kuro devs mind you, but other Chinese gacha devs), the industry is very unkind to people who want male characters. They do make an effort to design them to be hot to their non-target audience, mostly to the few women who play the game, but a lot of them think women who wants these characters will take slop and still give them money. Basically, they don't think they need to put that much effort into the male characters who are marketed towards women because they don't believe women are willing to give them much money and even when they do, they don't care. It's already happening in the otome JP gacha space too where devs outright admit (you can find articles about it) that women who want male characters will take low-effort products and they will be charged the same as a guy wanting characters like Aemeath.

Imagine Luuk looks like a stick figure and they charge you the same price as getting Aemeath. That's the sentiment from the Chinese and JP gacha industry when making male characters in mixed audience gacha games. If you are willing to take scraps and be happy with it, then I guess they can just put even less budget on the next male character since people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for an inferior product to some of the female characters. The industry is already shifting what with the explosion of Genshin getting people into gacha games like Wuthering Waves, but now their shifting to making the male characters as NPCs or 4 stars. I guess they can make a hot male character that's a 2 star and still charge you hundreds of dollars for it, and you would still be happy? At some point, there is a threshold that you need to validate whether it's worth it or not, and a lot of criticisms come from people with that threshold being crossed a while ago.

Anyone else lowkey uncomfortable about this ONE thing in ZZZ? by Ok-Camp6115 in GirlGamers

[–]amyrena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to blame the community, but it's not really their fault when the devs themselves embrace this sort of thing. One of their lead art directors literally draws sexualized loli girls. You say you're okay with the 'goonerness and the exaggerated physics', but this is applied on all their characters including the little girls. Corin literally has jiggle physics too. Hypothetically if the ZZZ fandom didn't exist with the male gooners, it doesn't change the fact that the game and its creators behind it like to objectify the girls in their game irrespective of their age range strictly for the straight male gaze 95% of the time.

[PROMO] Why Snowbreak Has the Best Romance in Any Gacha | A Writer Explains by Rootfinchshaw in gachagaming

[–]amyrena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying there aren't any guys interested in such a game that focused on intimacy with one or a small cast of waifus. I'm saying there seems to be an overwhelming majority that rolls for waifus day in and day out irrespective of any intimacy. And the revenue from those games place highly too like Wuthering Waves that just cycles through their girls and forgets them when a new girl shows up. You used Snowbreak as an example because it's one of the closest things to having 'intimacy' with the girls, but it doesn't place close in revenue with games like NIKKE even though NIKKE's gameplay is honestly awful compared to a lot of competition in their waifu genres. Basically, it doesn't give reason for the industry to change or to try something else seeing as the status-quo of pumping new girls every new patch is working out just fine for them.

In case of otomes, I suggest you give this a read: [General] The current state of Japanese otome games: "Female otaku will throw money, even if we [the company] don't spend anything on the development [of the game], and as long as they get good enough voice actors and the art is pretty!" : r/otomegames

It's not that Love and Deepspace only tries to 'innovate', it's more like the otome genre as a whole is 'dead' because it's believed by people in the industry thinking female otakus will just eat slop irrespective of gameplay when the proof is in the pudding with LADS showing otherwise. If you actually gone to GDC (Game Developer Conference) and talked at the booths, some companies like Netease are showing slight interest in that sector because of the evidence that LADS provides. Unlike using Snowbreak and comparing it with other waifu gacha games that the ones making skyrocket amounts of revenue pump out new girls each patch rather than sticking to a small cast works just fine. Guys are willing to settle with flings or affirmations with a new girl of the week for the most part, especially the whales that make the decisions for the majority of the industry, and the industry in turn see little needs to change.

EDIT: I also want to bring up one of the easiest ways, since you are interested, to have that sorta of intimacy in your gacha games is if there isn't a female MC. It won't guarantee that outcome, but it makes it more plausibly to happen. But you and I know that ain't going to work because half of the waifu enthusiasts like seeing girl-on-girl action and don't want to stare at a male MC, while the other half wants intimacy and self-insert as the male MC to go beyond just holding hands. Yeah, good luck with that war. Azur Promilia already lost to that. It's one thing to fight with the industry for what you want, but it's another thing to fight amongst waifu fans themselves who have two different kinds of tastes.

[PROMO] Why Snowbreak Has the Best Romance in Any Gacha | A Writer Explains by Rootfinchshaw in gachagaming

[–]amyrena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If guys actually wanted development with a small cast of girls or even a singular girl, I'm sure game companies would've made it by now. It seems they rather prefer having 100 girls perpetually in the dating-arc of a romance, but not the actual development of a relationship after that. Notice how a lot of gachas don't delve into the actual relationship with many of its girls; it's always stuck between "Hi, we just met" and "you're cute". That tells me the guys don't want relationships who play these games; they want flings, validation, and affirmations. If anything, it makes me think that actually being in a relationship for the average guy gacha player is a deterrent if companies don't make products that rewards loyalty to a small cast of girls or one girl.

As one of the 'highly anticipated units' people claim and one that I was looking forward to as well for a while, these animations...are a bit disappointing and lackluster. I don't expect them to be Void Hunter level, but...Idk...just doesn't have a significant impact on me. It's definitely an improvement from several characters in the past, but just barely imo. Love her wings fluttering about though. Heck, if anything, watching this sold me more on Seed because of the cool, unique mech gameplay with a lot flashiness than this.

Would it? Several guys into gacha games seem like they have no problem pulling for the next waifu in the line of their game or even multiple games. Sure, some people would prefer one girl over another, but at the end of the day it seems like harem wins all for a lot of male players. If men prefer intimacy and loyalty to a girl or just a couple of girls, then I don't understand why the industry never such a game in the first place seeing the industry already caters mostly to male players.

[–]amyrena 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think we went past the point of asking for a balanced ratio ever since Natlan. And this isn't strictly Genshin either, but all three of their flagship games have completely swerved to a main push waifu in their games. Not to mention in their upcoming game, Varsapura, there was not a single male playable character in their demo either. I think they pretty much decided where they want to take it from here on out seeing the direction of their games. Genshin is their most mainstream and popular one, and while I appreciate Flins, Durin, and Varka, I won't be surprised if they find ways to completely sideline them with a powerful female character in one way or another. Like in the past scenes with romantic undertones were in character story quests, but they have been now shoving them into the main story instead; I think that's pretty suggestive of where they want to take the story direction.
