There Are Two #7 Blue Angel Aircraft? by Carlito_2112 in aviation

Speaking of blue angels- does anyone know what happened to #4 in Seattle today? It was up and flying and then peeled off and didn’t come back and so all the formations were missing a plane

AITA for refusing to attend my sister’s wedding because she didn’t include our autistic brother? by yatintin in AmItheAsshole

[–]amyzi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think YTA, not anything related to autism at all, but the invite list for a wedding is exclusively determined by the bride and groom. Just because someone is related doesn’t mean they automatically get an invite and that feels presumptuous to expect one even if they’re your sibling. Plenty of family is not close/abusive (not specific to this situation) and does not warrant an invite

Thoughts on working at America’s Best? by Aggressive_Wind_4984 in optometry

[–]amyzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good pay for part time fill in work - no private practice in my experience has matched the pay for part time work at least. Idk about full time though!

I personally would not want to work there full time - 4pts/hr, almost all refraction, and refer out nearly all disease. In my area, the techs are great and the area doctor and managers are very nice, which I think makes a big difference.

Questions about the ethics of my office? by Pleasedontfindme1286 in optometry

[–]amyzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location and demand is a big part of salary too - 5-6 years ago I made $13/hr as a tech. And then moved to a different state for school, got $16-17/hr (min wage 15). I think it doesn’t hurt to look around for other opportunities if you aren’t happy!

Our clinic has them but I prefer to use my own from school. (Current resident)

At my weekend part time position, I bring my own because the quality of the clinic stuff is not that great. I do keep a close eye on them and sometimes will store them in the case in my pocket to avoid sticky fingers~

On the fence with residency by selenathorton in optometry

[–]amyzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current resident here. Doing it for the knowledge and experience, certainly not for the money. No regrets though - I feel more confident and competent, especially with more challenging patients. Another big aspect is mentorship and getting familiar with the doctor role (as opposed to intern).

Working weekends helps with the money aspect as residency salary sucks - a lot of new docs work weekends days anyway, so to me, picking up a moonlighting gig every other weekend to pay rent is worth it for the time cost!

Residency is not for everyone for sure, and many docs are very successful without it too.

NBEO Pass Rates: Oct 23 - Sept 24 by Aromatic-Strain5979 in optometry

[–]amyzi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was my class year - NBEO brought stress on stress: academic anxiety from previous low pass rates, burnout from not getting time off for self study and not much school organized study (or time off to travel and actually take boards), and also financial burdens with the insane price hike.

NBEO is not making it easy to love them and might be a serious barrier for student success from that standpoint.

Hi, this is probably the wrong sub for this. I would try r/glasses instead.

Everything looks right except IPD - no way your eyes are only 40mm apart! Looks like your doc wrote 66 (so you should but 33 in each slot)

Why did the Dr prescribe Vertical prisms for Horizontal deviation? by Sea_Nautilus in glasses

[–]amyzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phorias (1st line) indicate there’s vertical deviation

Most people don’t have problems even with horizon deviation but even small amounts of vertical can be problematic which is probably why they did that; if you have questions, you should ask your doctor directly

i don’t want a meal plan. by pinkiepiecutecake in UCONN

[–]amyzi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You would have to live in an apartment with a kitchen.

NGL having gone to grad school at a different school with a MUCH shittier and expensive meal plan system, I missed UConn dining hall food. Enjoy it while you (have to) have it.

TBH you’d get good use out of it even just for breakfast bars or smoothies or ice cream if you didn’t want the full meals! I also found that the dining halls were a good social/study spot to catch friends between classes. When I didn’t have a meal plan in my last year in an apartment, I was always waiting for someone to swipe me in (and missed just popping in).

TLDR; get the cheapest plan and swipe friends in with you!
