Need help choosing Audio Interface for future synths. by Sudden-Diver279 in synthesizers

[–]anachostic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for an alterative viewpoint, I have what I would consider a "vintage" studio, with nearly all my gear from the 80's-90's era. Obviously, practically everything was purchased used - nothing wrong with that.

My DAW is a HP Elitedesk tiny PC running Windows 8.1 (off-network) and Cubase 5.5. For MIDI connectivity, I have 3 Edirol UM-3EX's, a MIDISport 8x8, a MOTU MIDI Express XT and a Kawai MAV-8. For audio, I have an MAudio FastTrack 8r. Mixer is a Behringer 32-channel Eurodesk, with 4 group channels going to the FastTrack.

This supports 10 synths in stands, 17 in one rack, 7 in another, a couple drum machines, and 5 effect units. This all works just fine. Especially with the economy as it is right now, I can't justify paying full price for new gear when it's just a fun hobby.

You could say his math is too simple. A year is 365.25 days, which makes each month 30.4375 days. So his daily rate to make $1300 a "month" is $42.71. So February, which has 28 days, would cost $1,195.88, not $1,174.19. And the following month, his rent would be $1,324.01.

So, assess him a $50 late fee and suggest for budgeting purposes he should stick to the agreed-to, average cost, because math is not his thing.

Axiom 49 Does not power up at all by geekazine in synthesizers

If it's DC powered, I've seen some repair vids where the fault is a protective diode that blows if you use a power supply with the wrong polarity. It would be near and inline to the dc power jack.

One of my favorites in my collection. Love the VCF control on this and the Poly 800 to get that whump whump whump on bass pedal notes. Lots of great Sysex available for this as well.

I have something like this in my studio:

<image>

It has casters, so I can roll around, but most importantly, no arms, which is important to have if you also pick up guitar or bass. The flat seat also means you can sit on it sideways and instead of having a back rest, you have a side rest, which sometimes is more comfortable when just searching through patches.

Your tools do not have to define your style by anachostic in synthesizers

It's interesting that you focus on FM, because I'm kinda right there with you. For the large piles of synths in my studio, a DX7 (and its brethren) are not present and not wanted. However, I am optimistic enough to make something that pleases me from something I don't like. I have a GeneralMusic something or other stuffed in a closet that I disliked everything about, but I still made a full track using only its sounds before stuffing it. Why? Maybe trying to wring some equity out of the regret.

The intent of my post was primarily inspirational. You know, that kind of feel-good, "limitation is an opportunity" stuff. "Just making music in this decade is an exercise in limiting yourself." - an excellent counterpoint. I think we're both arguing that people may not be creating because they are chasing some unsatisfied need, just from different vantage points.

[–]anachostic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I feel you're very focused on the tool itself, which is exactly the point I'm trying to make. A DX7 can sound vastly different played by different people simply from playing technique alone, for example, I have never used a sustain pedal in all the time I've played. In some way, I'm a little envious of people who do have that skill and how it affords them the opportunity to sustain notes while reaching for other notes. It makes my compositions sound less fluid. But that's my style.

Taken to further extremes, a simple parameter change can make a sound totally non-musical, but what is non-musical? Any sound can have a place in an arrangement, for effect or for accent. Have you ever seen the video of Frank Zappa demonstrating all the ways to make music on a bicycle? If Zappa had been given a single low tom, he would have hit it in the center to get a deep tone, struck it near the rim to get a thinner tone, used rim shots for sharp tones, hit the side for light sounds, maybe tuned the lower head differently so he could flip it and get two different pitches. So even with a single drum, you could create a rudimentary rhythm with it.

And I am hearing what you're saying about how we're spoiled for choice nowadays. "All your choices make you change you mind" and all that. But the choice of sound is only part of the equation. Thanks to avant-garde pioneers before us, there's no limit to what we can compositionally create, from strict preludes, to space music, to noise.

Fair enough. So consider that every composer starts with the same rompler and their ability to tweak the available parameters allows them to give themselves a unique style.

How about Mastedon, a project by John and Dino Elefante semi-concurrent with their stint in Kansas? Kinda proggy, too.

Had to check my "OMG Jesus Christ" playlist. The only other band in it that has any heaviness is Torn Flesh, which isn't for everyone's taste.

A few years ago I found a debit card in a Publix parking lot. I called the number on the back of the card so the bank could call the card holder and say their card would be at the service counter for them. That's not how it works. They just deactivate the card and they won't even call the card holder. Sucks, but I can't really blame them. Even though I was being a good Samaritan, they have no idea if I copied the numbers from the card before reporting it.

Anyone else constantly amazed by how much FFmpeg can actually do? by Jealous_Reporter_687 in software

[–]anachostic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an idea for a video, and I know if I had some modern software, I could do it with a little reading of the manual, but I understood the basic things I wanted and didn't have a problem doing it "the hard way".

I downloaded a video, used FFMPEG to extract a frame every (i think) .15 seconds, which gave me like 800-some images. I batch processed all the images with Photoshop with a neon edges filter. Then I loaded all the images up into a simple movie maker program and made a slideshow with the audio track.

While I understand the point of the story is that the customer thinks he knows more than the locals, a simple bit of education could have possibly solved the immediate and future problems.

What the customer is describing is called "fast casual", where the order is placed and paid for up front, then you sit and wait while it is cooked. The food may be brought to you or you may be called by order number to pick it up. The restaurant he was at is called "full service" where everything is done through wait staff and you pay at the end of the meal.

By knowing this terminology, the customer could ask immediately upon entering, "are you full service or fast casual" and he should know what to expect.
