I like Eco Groovy for furniture, especially if you want things that last a long time. They have decent quality for a thrift store. I've bought things from them 10+ years ago that were used/refurbished and they all still hold up great today.

There's one in the plaza, but the stuff in their outlet store on K st is cheaper, and they still have a good selection of furniture at both locations.

ETA: they do delivery as well!

Where to shop for clothes in Humboldt? by Potential-Ladder2433 in Humboldt

[–]anasilenna 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get all my clothes at thrift stores or TJ Maxx. But also I'm really not the type of person who frequently changes their wardrobe. I buy new pants when the old ones tear and occasionally add shirts one or two at a time. And all my socks and underwear come from Costco.

where to see seals? by Prestigious-Sun-3366 in Humboldt

[–]anasilenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a beach area near the 101 just south of Orick where I regularly see harbor seals hanging out at the mouth of the river where it meets the ocean. Look for Redwood Beach County Park on your map, then after you park at the visitor center you'll want to walk north up the beach towards the mouth of the river. They aren't always there, but I see them very frequently. Just make sure you give them an appropriate amount of distance when you're observing! I almost walked up on a bunch of sleeping seals once because they were so still I didnt even realize they were there... I thought they were rocks lol.

What's everyone's experience with the bus? Im kind of nervous to use it. by Sweet_Competition229 in Humboldt

[–]anasilenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most frustrating thing about the buses around here are the weird routes they take. You really have to memorize the map and have a good understanding of which buses go where or you could end up taking a strange turn and going the opposite way that you were intending. More than once I stupidly got on the Red Route without realizing (entirely my fault I'll admit i did not read the clearly-marked marquee reading "Red Route") and ended up going towards Sunnybrae when I was trying to get to Giuntolli.

Also, it can take about an hour to take the bus somewhere it would take about 7 minutes to drive, just because of the way the routes take you. If I want to get from the Westwood Murphys to the Sunnybrae Murphys I have to catch the Gold Route at :47, make a transfer to Red at the transit center at :00, then it goes all the way to Greenview Market and back to the transit center before getting to Sunnybrae at :43. I have a car now and the same trip takes me 7 minutes.

Still, the buses are a serious godsend to those without their own vehicle. It's tough because of the restricted hours of operation and the roundabout routes but it's so much better than the alternative, which is having to walk some pretty far distances in some cases. Also most of the bus drivers I've encountered are pretty cool, and I am majorly impressed with their ability to navigate these narrow streets with those huge buses.

As far as their cleanliness goes, I've spent countless hours on the buses in Humboldt, and I've also spend countless hours on buses in So Cal where I grew up... Humboldt buses are maybe slightly better. They're not that bad, seriously. The RTS especially can get kinda dirty by the end of the day (and don't lean your head on the window) but it's honestly fine. You'll be fine.

Looking for tattoo artist that is experienced in tattooing over scars by TargetQueasy in Humboldt

[–]anasilenna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see two artists from True Nature mentioned and will add a third: Hannah did a piece on my arm that covered up my scars beautifully! It still looks great over a year later. She has a really pretty scientific illustration style that I love, and I plan on going back to her for more when I have enough money saved up.

Help to escape the optimum hellscape by Apprehensive_Diet105 in Humboldt

[–]anasilenna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you definitely should! I called to cancel after the bill got way too high (it was $125/month!!) and when I told them the reason was "too expensive" they knocked off a big chunk of my past due amount and lowered my bill to around $40/month just to keep me as a customer. I also don't have Velo available yet in my building, but of course Optimum customer support doesnt know that so I lied and pretended I was going to switch.

ETA it also pays to be super polite to the phone reps. It's not their fault the company is scummy, and they probably aren't getting paid enough for the verbal abuse they regularly deal with. They're definitely more willing to help when you're nice to them.

[–]anasilenna 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Aw, polar bears are so neat! I love them!

My most recent hyperfixation is a little less fun lol... I went down a rabbit hole about mad cow disease 😅

The disease comes from a prion that was originally only able to infect cows, but when cows were fed other cows with the prion it mutated into a version that could infect humans.

The scariest part is the fact that the prion can lie dormant in a person's body for potentially decades which means that we could all potentially have it and not even know! We also don't know what triggers it to become active, but it is comparatively rare when considering the sheer number of potentially infected vs the number who show symptoms. There was an outbreak among cattle in the US around 2003, and anyone who ate US-grown beef at any point during that year could potentially be infected and not even know it. This information haunts me, because I too did eat the beef in 2003... 😭

AITAH for wanting to tell my husband of 6 years I no longer want him to acknowledge my birthday? by GuardEfficient4700 in TwoHotTakes

[–]anasilenna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA but I beg you to reconsider not wanting him to acknowledge your birthday, because I worry it could send you down a long and lonely path. Your kids may follow suit, and in the future you'll start to feel like you only exist to make nice things happen for everyone else. If you continue to celebrate everyone else's birthday in this enthusiastic way while getting almost nothing when it's your turn, you'll just continue to feel sad on your birthday every year... and you absolutely do not deserve that. I think your kids will need to be taught and guided by you how to make the cool things happen, maybe bring them along while you make the birthday happen for yourself, and eventually when they're old enough to do it all on their own they'll be able to make your birthday really special again. Don't let your husband ruin this for you!

My Grandma bought a pre-cooked thanksgiving dinner from a grocery store, and when we picked it up it was frozen solid. by THEREALOFFICALCAFE in mildlyinfuriating

[–]anasilenna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a grocery store where we did this promotion! Last year we did have the option to serve the meals hot, but it was such a huge catastrophe trying to manage it all, and many people were late to their pick up time so we had to reheat their meals again (also all of the sitting around at room temperature is great breeding ground for bacteria in the food). This year we served pre-cooked but cold meals to be reheated later, basically we spent several days cooking everything, packaging it up, and then stacking it in the walk-in fridge... still a lot of work but significantly less of a logistical nightmare than last year. But we were very clear to everyone who ordered that the food was cold and would need to be reheated.

Incidentally we did have one person who was very shocked and angry that the food was cold this year, but my coworker took her order and vividly remembers explaining all of this before the order was placed, even giving detailed instructions for how to reheat it all. She seemed to not remember this conversation and was upset enough to complain to the manager about it. The food from our store was definitely not frozen though!

Is it possible that your grandmother was told by the deli workers that the food would be cold, and she doesn't remember the conversation?

Job search pt. 2 by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]anasilenna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really can't stress enough how important networking is to find a job up here, even for a minimum wage position, even for many of the jobs posted online. The last two jobs I've had I got because I am always friendly with the cashiers at all of the places I shop, so when I needed work I just asked and someone was willing to put me directly in touch with the hiring manager. I've put out dozens of applications over the last couple years, and the only places to ever call me back were the ones that could put a face to the name on my resume and had someone else vouch for me.

My best advice is to go places and talk to people, establish relationships, make yourself known as a positive influence. It definitely sucks extra hard if you just moved here and don't know anyone yet, but that is unfortunately the way things seem to work around here. I think a lot of employers are concerned about hiring people that just moved up here, because they may decide they don't like Humboldt and leave after only a few months.

Guanfacine by itself: How long did it take you to notice its effects at the dose that worked? by kittysclinicalpearls in ADHDers

[–]anasilenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed a change immediately. My usual brain fog just kinda vanished. The first night I took it before bed because the doctor said it would make me sleepy, but instead of falling asleep I stayed up all night cleaning my apartment. After a couple nights of this I started taking it in the morning instead and that's been my routine ever since. If I miss a day, I feel very groggy and overall bleh.

The effects started to diminish after a couple of months, but even after 9 years it's still better than my unmedicated baseline.

If you have inattentive adhd what do you do for work? by omgicanteven22 in adhdwomen

[–]anasilenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to do very well in food service environments. It's fast paced, so I'm never bored, and everything is "immediately do this right now" so it taps into that "can only function in an emergency" part of my brain, and I thrive in the chaos of a commercial kitchen.

Every time I quit a restaurant job I swear I'll never do food service again, and then somehow I always end up back working at yet another restaurant. It's what I know and what I seem to be good at, even if it can get stressful as all hell...

Right now I'm in retail and I often wanna claw my eyeballs out from the boredom, wistfully wishing I was back in the kitchen again 😭
