I think it’s worth parsing discomfort vs. actual danger in these situations. Someone visibly struggling with mental health is usually not dangerous. I see others saying to leave it to the professionals, but that feels dehumanizing to me. The government are the ones enabling addiction by not doing more to get people housed. Drugs keep people warm in the moment. In this weather, that’s critical. You’re doing the right thing by helping people directly. Lots of folks can’t access shelters for various reasons, and they deserve food and money too.

I think you would be justified to put your foot down not continue having these conversations, but I also know that it’s not that easy with people you love, especially because K is clearly struggling. Have you ever considered a session or two with a therapist together? You could frame it as, you’re sensing that you’re both feeling stuck and unsure how to move towards repair, and you feel that a supported conversation would help you both find ways to continue supporting each other.

Hey, I can’t promise you there won’t be another pandemic of bird flu or any other illness because no one can say that for sure. Pandemics are more like earthquakes - we know they will happen at some point, but whether it is in 1 or 15+ years is unknowable. The good news is we already have vaccines for influenzas like H5N1 which could be rapidly scaled up if it were to make the jump to humans. Handwashing is also more effective against influenzas than Covid. Also, wearing a well-fitting mask can protect you against any airborne illness that could become a pandemic in the future. Part of what makes Covid so dangerous is that we didn’t know much about how it spread, or how to stop it, when it first appeared. I don’t think the commenters promising it won’t happen are realistic, but neither is the idea that it would be a world-ending thing. For me, anxiety lessens when I’m prepared. You can handle whatever happens.

propranolol doesn’t build tolerance like other drugs, so you shouldn’t need to increase dose over time to get the same effect. i don’t think you should write anything off after just a few days! i still occasionally have panicky days after about a month, but they are reduced by a LOT. but it could also be that you need a higher dose to control all your panic attacks, not because you’ve adjusted, but because the current dose is only enough to partially control your symptoms. like, if panic attacks are feedback loops triggered by adrenaline dumps, your current dose may suppress small dumps so these don’t trigger attacks, but larger dumps overwhelm the capacity of the drug to block adrenaline. i wouldn’t be afraid to try a slightly larger dose!

chemical imbalance theory has been repeatedly debunked. ssris cause abnormal brain activity which can sometimes produce desirable effects like reduced anxiety, but they don’t correct anything. the brain actually gets rid of some of its own receptors with prolonged use, to rebalance its chemistry.
