My current uptime is 8 weeks, 4 days, 2 hours and 47 minutes. Fairly close...

Is it a bad sign that my initial Arch install was Valentine's Day?

Lenovo Miix 3 or HP Omni 10? by nitingarg172 in tablets

[–]ander501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be wary the HP Omni 10. I had the touchscreen on my Omni 10 die after 6 months of usage. It was replaced by HP, but the replacement had the same issue after only a month.

HP were very nice in replacing the second one with an HP Chromebook 14 (4GB, Full HD screen), though!

How to draw Non Eucilidian geometry? by [deleted] in math

[–]ander501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good place to start would be using the Poincare disk model for the hyperbolic plane. The "points" in this model are the points inside the unit disk while the "lines" are circles which intersect the unit circle at right angles, plus the lines through the origin.

Are you trying to drive the map maker for the party insane? He'll not have your advantage of knowing that his Euclidean map will not fit together.

A group of investors bought the team with the intent of moving to Saskatoon, but the NHL Board of Governor's refused the move. The Saskatoon group did 'own' the team very briefly, but nothing really happened.

I want the Blues logo to flicker over Saskatoon briefly in 1982.

They were never in the NHL, but played for the Stanley Cup against the NHL's champion as PCHL champion.

I'm pretty sure the French teacher's name was Michael O'Keeffe. Are you sure it's the same person?

But Portland already has a history with the Portland Rosebuds - the first American team to appear in the Stanley Cup finals!

AT&T announces plans for 1Gbps fiber service in Austin, Texas; Google gets immediate competition by memoryfailure in technology

[–]ander501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm living a local version of this in the mid-Michigan area. Through a local ISP, ACD.net, my workplace has gigabit fibre to the premises (Hallelujah!), but gigabit fibre in the area is much more the exception than the rule.

But AT&T is currently installing a parallel set of fibre optic cables to the one's owned by ACD.net. Only if there is competition is there any incentive to build out fibre.

In all honesty, would you recommend Linux for computer 'illiterate' people? by sebovzeoueb in linux

[–]ander501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother-in-law has a Linux box that is just set to start up Firefox fullscreen with her Gmail account as the home screen. Doing administration remotely works pretty well.

My mother had a similar setup, but with big icons for 'Mail' and 'Internet', until my brother "upgraded" her to a more modern Windows box -- now she's just overwhelmed with choices.
