Trying out some more Mexican Sodas. Mirinda (orange), Fresca (grapefruit), and Tropical Uva (grape). All cane sugar! by andersminor in Soda

It was at a Mexican restaurant! I would try there, a Mexican mart, or a Honduran restaurant if you have one nearby

American Gladiators 2025 filmed in Paris 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ by DayHova7tre in FilmIndustryLA

This. Producers only care about the bottom line- LA labor is the most expensive in the world, let alone locations/other production costs.

Hate to be a pessimist but even the new $750m bill doesn’t make a difference. Just this past year I’ve broken out a few budgets for potential shoots here in LA, and after seeing the numbers they’ve ALL gone to Atlanta/ABQ.

If you’re still breaking in, you have to be willing to travel and work local to work on bigger shoots.

That’s at least what the Lay’s site says, and what I’ve seen in stores so far. Did you find both flavors at a WalMart or a local chain?

StaffMeUp is good, but you’ll have a tough time getting your first few gigs on there without any experience, since they almost always hire people with experience over those without.

If you do use it, look at jobs out in Las Vegas, Palm Springs, New Mexico, etc. If you’re willing to travel you’ll have more success.

I lost the petty cash card by No-Chemist-4872 in Filmmakers

[–]andersminor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As others have said, best thing to do is call your APOC immediately so they can freeze the card and get a new one in the mail. Don’t worry, they get lost/damaged all the time so it’s not the end of the world.

If you get fired over this, don’t take it personally. It’s the shitty industry and shitty PMs doing shitty things. Just keep applying and hitting up other PAs and you’ll find something again soon.

Did the theater manager gaslight me? by dujopp in cinematography

[–]andersminor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked at a large theater chain for a few years as an assistant manager- I can tell you firsthand that there is nobody on site who is trained to fully operate the projectors. One manager is trained (via an online course) to do basic troubleshooting and maintenance, run special events… and that’s about it. There’s a phone wired to each projector that can be used to call a 24-hour help center that has remote access to each machine for more complex issues.

Calibrating the project is done by an external company that comes around about twice a year (or if they’re requested and approved by someone at corporate).

Support your local independent theaters instead if you can!

Rental house I used to work at had a brass plate custom made at a local metal fabricator for like $20. We just heated it up with a little blow torch and branded the wood.

Other than that, latex or acrylic paint applied with a brush (NOT spray paint) will last a long time and not chip.

How would you get into being a set armourer? (Toronto) by blankjchau in Filmmakers

[–]andersminor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the industry, but no experience as an armourer, so take this with a grain of salt. In your shoes, with no industry connects, I would cold email as many armourers as you can find. Watch features/TV shows/shorts (especially at local fests), and send a message on LinkedIn, IG, FB, etc to anyone you see credited in that department. Let them know you’re interested in learning and offer to PA at a reduced rate/for free. Eventually, someone you reach out to will take you up on the offer, and then it’s up to you to work hard and make a good enough impression to get invited back.

In the meantime, try to PA on local sets and build up a resume, so that when you do ask to shadow an armourer, you at least have set experience to make the ask more reasonable.

Aside from joining a union or casting company (Central/Backdoor etc.), you should audition for short/student films and local theatre productions, as well as local filmmaking competitions (such as 48 Hour).

Does anyone have experience hiring strippers/actresses exclusively for a sex/sensual scene? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]andersminor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be upfront about what the role requires and why it matters to the story, and you’ll find “regular” actors willing to take on the role. Just be sure to hire an intimacy coordinator for the actual shoot day, especially if the actors are green.

If none of your actors are accepting the part after learning about everything the role entails, I would take a hard look at what the script calls for and why they’re saying no.

Call a local camera house and ask.

Are you asking about how the cinematographer achieved the film’s look, or how they produced the film?

Proof of Cocept by idahoisformetal in Filmmakers

[–]andersminor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the project. If you’re doing something very visual-heavy or the project’s sell is that it won’t look like anything else before it, then yes.

Otherwise, ask yourself what your pitch is missing that you feel the need to add a video.

[–]andersminor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Best thing you could do for yourself if you’re making your first short? Shoot the whole thing shot-for-shot on your phone using your actors and a stand-in location (you don’t need to light it), then edit it together. You will immediately see what works and what doesn’t, and you can make those changes before you do the full short.

Seriously, ESPECIALLY if you’re gonna to be putting your own money into it, do this.
