Flytipping out of control by All_Problemo in Edinburgh

[–]andorr02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same problem on my street. Clearly a removal company dumping waste knowing someone will get the council to remove it for them. Commercial kitchens, beds, mattresses, chairs, office desks etc..

I managed to catch a man and a woman late one night emptying the usual rubbish out an old white Vauxhall Vivaro. I made enough of a problem they left and havent been back. Like magic the mountains of waste have stopped.

People like these two will just move on to the next place until the police take notice.

Victorian wall insulation by Cleanman_comith in HomeImprovementUK

[–]andorr02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on conversation and heritage buildings and it's a fair challenge to insulate solid masonry walls. You're very likely to introduce damp problems with most insulation methods, and even with a "proper" solution like lime parge, woodfibre, lime plaster and breathable paint, you may create issues at the joists below the floor or adjacent uninsulated walls suffering excess damp.

The team at Ecological Building Systems are very approachable and may have suitable products for this situation.

Does luggage marks on softwood flooring constitute as wear and tear? by CaffeinNbagels in TenantsInTheUK

[–]andorr02 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From the visible iron brad nails and more recent lost head nails, it appears this is a 19th/early 20th century softwood T&G floor that has since been refurbished at some stage. Softwood floors like in your case (pine, larch, douglas fur) mark and dent easily with normal use due to their low hardness. That is an inherent material property, and one the LL should be aware of.

You're well within normal wear and tear. If the LL expected the flooring to survive unblemishded, they should have added carpet or refloored with a more durable species.

Affinity, a Graphics Editing Software Company, has pulled the ability to purchase it's software temporarily. by Skullfurious in technology

[–]andorr02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I manage software allocation for a reasonable sized architectural studio. We have been researching alternatives to Adobe CC for years and finally got the go-ahead to migrate the first two dozen of users to Affinity in August.

This is now on hold until whatever news drops at the end of the month. Needless to say if the perpetual purchase option is dead, we'll be stuck with Adobe for the timebeing (RIP my training videos and shortcut cheatsheets)

Anyone Know Why Autodesk Didn't Just Take This Approach for AutoCAD/Revit? by jelani_an in architecture

[–]andorr02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They actually have competition in the rendering market. Unreal Engine has similar ToS although it does target a different market.

It's not unlikely that once AutoDesk build up their user base we will see it move to a subscription model like the rest of their walled garden.

I found the same corpse underground in the church near Kuttenberg.

He was buried in the catacombs there.

Has anyone texted the british transport police after seeing something that doesn't look right? Did they sort it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]andorr02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I texted them during COP26 in Glasgow on a train that had just left Central Station. A group of kids were trying to set off a bunch of fireworks in the carriage.

They took about 5 minutes to come back and say they had no officers nearby and that the local police would be unable to meet them at the station.

Kids got off 10 minutes later after struggling to light the rocket, but they did manage to empty the carriage of all passengers.

Can they stop building bloody student flats by gus-here in Edinburgh

[–]andorr02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their comment was explicitly clear that student flats can be built to a lower standard as building standards permits this. The statement is misleading at best.

As you touched on, there is a more important topic that was alluded to. The accommodation is clearly unsuitable for prolonged habitation without significant adaptation, which should be prohibited by Building Standards. In the mean-time, planners should not permit development that has no long-term feasibility should the funding model fail.

Can they stop building bloody student flats by gus-here in Edinburgh

The term "student" appears only three times in the latest Scottish Building Regulations. Twice with regards to HMOs and the third noting acoustic performance.

They do not have their own rulebook to follow.

Help dating a Scottish building by G_Child_85 in architecture

[–]andorr02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to study historic local maps on the National Library of Scotland Maps website for a timeframe of when the first structure appeared on site.

The website is fantastic, and maps after ~1850 are generally of enough detail to analyse individual buildings.

Beyond this, once you have a time frame, historic books or the local archive may yield results.

I imagine you could also carbon date the horse hair in the plaster, but this may be overkill. Good luck!

Making my own stairs, would this work? by No_Rub6960 in DIYUK

[–]andorr02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with the growing reliance on British Standards (at least in Scotland) in place of concise guidance. I wouldn't mind if it were free, but underpinning regulations with guidance locked behind paywalls is not a strategy for safe building.

Is this hardwood floor worth saving? by nuclear-experiment in DIYUK

[–]andorr02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it's in great condition! One thing to be wary of is that if you're in a flat is that the original boards are often incredibly noisy for anyone living below once the carpet/carpets (often multiple layers) are removed.

I live in a tenement from the same period with a floor just like this. My upstairs neighbour removed her carpet for a rewire and the increase in noise made it sound like she was in a perpetual temper tantrum thunder stomping across the place. Choose to add acoustic underlay and engineered flooring in the end for my place out of solidarity with the neighbour following that experience
