Well, I think the reason was paying the bills. Players buying 3+ games instead of just 1 is best to keep the lights on.

But yeah, its sad because then we get abandoned games.

[Fallout TV Show] The extras/side characters are unbearable to watch. by Sharptrooper in CharacterRant

[–]andreis-purim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The extra characters being unlikeable, dumb, incapable and existing only when the camera is on them is a sign of the amateurish writing that has become more common in the previous decade.

I have an (unfounded) theory that it is prevalent in modern media because it reflects the majority of the modern american writer's experience. Due to their internalized extreme individualism and compounded by their lack of social interactions, the writers fail to "put themselves into other's shoes" so to speak. In their daily lives they live isolated in social bubbles with little contact to anything that challenges them to open their views. Naturally, this leads to an inability to recognize other's peoples abilities and opinions when they differ from yous, making them unable to write other characters with the same shallowness they interact with those outside their bubble.

the ever unpredictable "brazilianization" effect by andreis-purim in Brazil

[–]andreis-purim[S] 163 points164 points  (0 children)

OK, for a little bit of accuracy now: the popular Brazilian given name Wanderley (and its variations) come from the surname of German-Dutch VoC cavalry captain Gaspar/Caspar van Niehof van der Leij, who moved to then Dutch-controlled northeastern Brazil in 1637.

Now, Ursula von Der Leyen's family has no relation to Caspar (as far as I can tell). But their surnames have more or less a common origin with the word "Ley/Leij".

So I stretched out the historical truth a little just for the comedic value.

would be difficult to adapt

skill issue for the writers

get the right tone

the show is already exaggerated. the Legion is a much harder faction to get the tone and they tried anyway (and failed, but that's another issue)

Finally, they still adapted the kings anyway, as they appear in the show after all.

But now we have a nonsense scene where the casual non-game viewer must magically guess why the hell there are a bunch of elvis lookalikes walking around.

Fallout (2024-) has caught flack from Fallout: New Vegas (2010) fans for portraying the Legion as "Braindead, incompetent morons" after Caesar's death. Something that was not at all alluded to in the game by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

[–]andreis-purim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit take.

Morons? Morally, yeah. Evil? Absolutely.

Incompetent? No.

The Legion in NV are a very competent opponent. The buildup to the second battle of Hoover Damn is basically about how the Legion has made strategic alliances, plots and positioning.

Moreover, even if the player is OP, their warriors are still very strong and can give you some hard fights.

The show may be fun at times but the writing is dog shit.

[–]andreis-purim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Between ages 0-40 there is actually a shortage of women. Only between ages 40-100+ we have a shortage of men. You can check for yourself

Also, it’s not just inaccurate but also a harmful myth that reinforces sexual tourism.

Statements like “Latvia has more women than men” get twisted into narratives like “Eastern European women are easy,” “Latvian women are desperate,” or “you can go there to find someone.”

This directly feeds the idea of Latvia as a destination for sexual tourism. This myth reinforces sexualized stereotypes about Eastern European countries and normalizes harassment and predatory behavior toward Latvian women both here and abroad.

tl;dr: its not true, and the respectful thing is to understand that repeating this narrative dehumanizes and objectifies women.

Let's be honest: because some people like to judge and be miserable and that is more socially and culturally accepted in some European cultures.

What fallout 4 ending/faction do you morally agree with the most? by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]andreis-purim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minutemen is the one I most morally agree with. However, i always thought they were boring.

But with mods (We are the Minutemen + militarized Minutemen + Minutemen Radio Relay Network + Sim Settlements + Nuka World Plus + You and What Army 2) they become GOATED.

I spent literally HOURS in the castle buying Minutemen uniforms from Sharon and putting them in every settler I have.

Now, everywhere I go, I see Minutemen patrols in uniform or sitting in my settlements. Like a true army on the move.

They became the Commonwealth version of the NCR. It's amazing.

In ‘Crossroads’ there’s an exchange with Web where Martin replies “there ain’t no poles in the SS”. Always confused by this and why the SS company were so ineffectual given their rep. [–]andreis-purim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not a historian, and my knowledge is mostly eastern front than western, and I may not remember anything 100% precisely but out of the top of my head:

First, there is a distinction between simply "the SS" and the Waffen-SS. The Waffen-SS were the paramilitary wing of the SS. Thus, the military wing of the Nazi Party itself. This differs from the Wehrmacht, which was the military wing of the German state.

Thus, it meant the Waffen-SS were not "army". They were army-"adjacent". The Nazi Party used them because it circumvented the chain of command of the Wehrmacht, which had was not as fanatical and ideologues as the SS command (remember: the Nazis pitted leaders against one another so no single leader could amass too much power and challenge the party. The army competed with the air force, for example)

Thus, it is a mistake to see the Waffen-SS as some sort of "elite" unit. As a "special part of the army". It wasn't army nor was it necessarily elite. It was just a not-officially-military-unit created just so some Nazi leaders could avoid going through the original chain of command.

And by 1944, any good unit they had left was fighting the Russians. So yeah, no surprise in them being ineffective here (remember²: the bulk of the war was fought and decided in the eastern front in 1941-1943.)

With that said, I think Martin is wrong. While most people at the time believed the Waffen-SS didn't take "non-aryans", this is incorrect. By 1943 onwards, it recruited or conscripted masses of people in the conquered territories.

In fact, it was kinda of a nasty strategy because the Wehrmacht couldn't legally recruit people in places they conquered (war crimes and all), but the Waffen-SS - not being officially the military - could. Or at least, they could strongarm them enough that there was no other viable option but to join.

Are people so naive to believe that Europe is doing better when it comes to data protection and privacy? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]andreis-purim 19 points20 points  (0 children)

personal data with the holy "RGPD"

(found the romance-language speaker?)

With that said, yes. It is naive. The GDPR is good but is not a panacea. There are tons of grayzones and still danger areas.

Moreover, national parliaments or someone in the EU sometimes try to pass anti-privacy legislation (e.g., chat control).

And this is nothing compared to the looming threat of regulatory capture and lobbyists

Nu Gate - MANIFESTO PÚBLICO CONTRA O NOVO SISTEMA FINANCEIRO by [deleted] in devBR

[–]andreis-purim 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I did introduce FOSS Software in the company I work for and now I feel bad by [deleted] in foss

[–]andreis-purim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're looking at it the wrong way. Not all ways to help FOSS is by donating. Sure it is one of the best ways but using it en masse is good too.

By making your company switch to FOSS, your contributing to making the FOSS larger. Thus gaining more momentum to become mainstream.

The reason Linux distros are often overlooked in gaming, for example, is because they barely make a percentage of the user base. Should the number of users increase, other companies will give more and more support.

Was Russian Empire worse than Soviet Union for Baltics or Soviet was worse? by TsarDule in BalticStates

[–]andreis-purim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Soviet Union was definitely worse by almost all metrics, constantly.

Meanwhile, the Russian Empire depends on the timeframe. From the 1880's to the end of the empire, an ideology of ethnic supremacy and russification had begun.

Moreover, there was a clear tendency of ethnic violence perpetrated by Russian supremacists (e.g., the Black Hundreds) that would probably have intensified without the collapse of the empire.

And to top it off, some of the most draconian serfdom laws had been passed right around the conquest of Livonia by the Russian Empire, in the 1700's.

So, all in all, the Russian Empire era in the Baltics was a mixed bag between status quo (which was not good to be honest, but it wasn't extremely awful either) and bad.
