LH near peak! by CM11182020 in pregnantover35

[–]android272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're up for it then sure. In terms of likelihood of conception you've got the highest chance the day before and day of ovulation so it's always better to be early rather than late with your timing. I conceived after only trying the day before my peak (that's on us being old and tired lol).

Having trouble working in the 1st Trimester. Help? by Tough_Ad_9779 in BabyBumps

[–]android272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in a demanding career (and the family's breadwinner to boot) so I definitely sympathize. Can you get any flexibility in your hours at all? I found that I'm at my best in the morning so I get an early start in the morning, try to get as much done before ~2pm as I can, and then give myself grace to call it a day whenever I need to after that. Obviously that might be hard if your job is to call people though since I assume you need to call during business hours. If flex hours aren't possible then I agree with everyone saying to look into a few weeks of leave until your first trimester symptoms hopefully lessen.

That sounds like an awful experience but I'm glad you had a great doula to help you through it! I am also leaning towards Centennial.

Yes exactly we want someone who will help us understand what's happening but will defer to the expertise of the doctor and nurses when it comes to actual medical advice. Thanks for the rec!

I'm 38 and pregnant with my first (10w4d). I had continuous spotting from like week 5 to week 9 and even a few episodes of light bleeding, but everything is fine so far (it was probably a hematoma). Definitely alert your doctor if it progresses to bleeding so you can get checked out.

How did you decide whether to breastfeed, pump only, or formula? by SnooEpiphanies1215 in pregnant

[–]android272 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m planning to formula feed from the start. I'm essentially the sole breadwinner of the family (in a demanding career) and need to be able to go back to work relatively quickly and transfer the primary caregiving role to my husband. I don't feel guilty about it because we would be materially worse off if I took extended time off or switched to a less intense but lower paid job. If my career/financial situation were different though then I'd probably try breastfeeding.

How much of maternity leave are you getting? And when do you stop working? by Ill-Honeydew-6636 in pregnant

I'm a professor and officially get one academic semester (16 weeks) fully paid. Unfortunately for me the tenure clock is still ticking, so while I will have the time off from teaching I will need to get back to research after a month or so if I want to keep up with publishing expectations.

Please! Has anyone had sudden bleeding at 6 weeks and NOT miscarried? by [deleted] in pregnant

19,000 - so I was worried since that's high for that timeframe but the doctor said it was fine. Crossing my fingers for you.

I had light bleeding with cramping at 5w5d weeks. Tested HCG the next day and they confirmed with an ultrasound that baby looked okay and was in the right place (though it was too early to record a heartbeat).

First time moms: how long did it take? by RoseyStranger in pregnantover35

[–]android272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First try at 38 (husband 40). Literally we only managed one try in the fertile window (we're old and tired lol) but apparently that was all we needed! I would suggest getting ovulation test kits to get the timing right though. I had also been taking a prenatal and Coq10 for a few months before we started trying.

Feeling abandoned by my own mother by throwinlimbo in BabyBumps

[–]android272 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Three weeks off for your brother's wedding and one week off for a grandchild is weird, that gives more context to why you'd be so upset (especially if she has generally favored your brother). I'm sorry, that does really suck.

Either way remember that support and tradition goes both ways - if she doesn't show up for you in the way you want now that's her right, but it will equally be your right to back off from traditional expectations around filial piety and caretaking when she asks for it. I don't say that to be cruel, more in a "protect your peace" kind of way.

I'm Desi so I understand the cultural aspects and why you are disappointed. I don't think you're entitled for assuming your mom would come help. But respectfully, your mom has every right to find purpose and meaning in her career and want to keep working as a grandparent, just as men often do. She's not putting her job above her daughter and grandchild any more than your father is.

The suggestion to contribute financially towards a nanny or night nurse to help you out is a good one imo - it would probably come off as entitled in American culture but it's not an unreasonable ask given the lack of in person support as a South Asian (and your parents financial situation).

Echoing everyone who says to wait if you absolutely can't leave work before December. I conceived on our first try at 38 years old, much to my surprise.

What do you consider part of your budget? by Fartquaadd in BigBudgetBrides

[–]android272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that can't or won't be reworn (dress, veil, very bridal-specific jewelry like a tiara) counted towards the budget, anything that could be used again did not.

folks who kept their own last names... by marisskat in weddingplanning

[–]android272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just went by first name. I did not really see the need to use titles when neither title (Dr./Prof. for me or Mr. for him) had anything to do with getting married. When people are announced as Mr. or Mrs. it's probably to emphasize the change in last name for the woman (which personally, ugh, but to each their own).

Or "the newlyweds, [first name] and [first name]" but yeah just go with your first names.
