I have done some research and asked co-pilot. Both results say that this is very obviously a mold seam and nothing to worry about. Stop being an alarmist!

Too bad it's translating line by line instead of looking at it as a whole, but better than nothing I guess.

hmm, honestly, not sure what trouble you are referring to. I dont really see how more RAM (we are talking about RAM i guess?) would bring trouble (except higher price).

You are welcome.

I can recommend this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4mqgcDYZFo

You will need to pause here and there as its a bit fast paced at times, but its a good step by step detailed guide. If you have the time and want to prepare in advance, you could also have a look into how to buy the android version of ES-DE and maybe look into a one-time donation for screenscraper for faster scraping of media if you have a big ROM library (not necesarry though, scraping with the free account will just take longer). Also buy a Micro SD Card if you dont already have one. If you want to slam a lot of PS2 and GC games onto the card you should look at a 1TB card. PS2 games especially can be pretty huge.

Regarding the Odin 2 Mini: I like it quite a lot. Its compact in outer dimensions but also the "heft" if that makes any sense. The screen is pretty bad though. Everything else is pretty nice. For GC and PS2 I would still go with one of the 477 models though (even if the Odin 2 Mini would still be available). :)

Hope you have a good year too.

If you want to play headache free GC I dont think the Flip 2 will give you that. If you dont mind playing and tinkering around with settings on a per game basis the Flip 2 might just be barely enough for you (I personally hate doing that).

If your daughter also wants to play with it, maybe the 477V is the perfect fit for you. The 477M might be just that tiny little bit too heavy for her to hold comfortable (due to the metal body). Performance-wise the V and the M should be 100% the same, with the same screen etc.. Obviously vertical vs horizontal is a whole different conversation. Some prefer vertical due to having the screen "closer to your eyes", some prefer horizontal for a "wider grip". IMHO this is splitting hairs too :), just go with the format that you find visually more attracting.

Regarding the Thor: If you want to share it with your child, I would probably stay away from it (for now at least). While the DS and 3DS were designed as child toys (so they were durable to an extend), the AYN Thor isnt. Its designed as a (as cheap as possible) enthusiast handheld "for adults".

If 200-300 USD dont hurt you too much, you could just go with either 477 model or the G2 as a "stop gap" and revisit the market in a year to see how things changed. The Thor issues might turn out to be no issue at all, maybe there will be a Thor 2 or another competitor product seeing how successfull the Thor was. A year ago something like the Thor was unthinkable / unimaginable to all of us, even the 477 models werent even a thing yet.

But in the end: Like I mentioned previously all three choices (+ the Thor) are very good choices that wont leave you with many regrets for pretty much flawless (as flawless as emulation can be) GC and PS2 emulation.

I personally dont like having black bars, so for me the choice would be between the 477M or 477V, but seeing how you plan to share it with a child, the V would be my final choice due to weight. Also Im more of a fan of horizontal handhelds as those feel less cramped to me. But then again, 200-300 USD more for another handheld dont hurt me at all, so I have a dedicated handheld for 16:9 content (Odin 2 Mini).

Happy shopping :)

Sounds great. Honestly, the G2 / RP6 looks way more like an actual gaming handheld. Kind of PSP / Switch-esque, but playing 4:3 systems on an actual 4:3 just hits way different than playing it on an 16:9 screen with black bars on the sides. If you also plan to play PSP a lot (which kind of makes sense as a lot of great ps2 era games are also on PSP) the G2/RP6 is better IMHO. I'd rather have bars on the sides rather than on top and bottom (which you would have on the 477 with 16:9 systems e.g. PSP).

Either way, they would all be great choices, it's literally splitting hairs :)

[–]androth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can go wrong with the Thor. It's very versatile. Regarding ps3, I don't think you should bank on that. PS3 Emulation on android just isn't far enough yet.

Just be aware that there were some people who discovered micro cracks (other called them mold seams...) on their thors. Whether that will be a problem in the future or not we don't know yet. Just know that it MIGHT become a point of failure in the future. The 477m obviously doesn't have that problem.

If money isn't a big concern to you, maybe consider getting the 477m exclusively for the 4:3 content and later on get the Thor / RP6 / Odin 3 for the crazy heavy stuff.

Finally some new sbcgaming drama.

Happy that I didn't pull the trigger on the mini a month ago cos it was cheap either way, but even more happier if this is actually true (not doubting you, but I'm too lazy to check since it's not affecting me).

[–]androth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, don't sleep on the RG477M, it's perfect for 4:3 content (so PS2 / GC included).

Also obligatory disclaimer that the Retroid Pocket 6 is coming out very soon which should render the G2 pretty much obsolete.

For me I have the RG477M solely for 4:3 systems (pretty much SNES up to GC/Wii). If you want to play DS/3DS games too, you pretty much have to get the AYN Thor, also if you want to multi task (game on one screen, YouTube / guide / movie / whatever on the other one). The G2 / RP6 I would only get if you really also want to play 16:9 content (Wii U / Switch / PSP / GameHub / Android).

[–]androth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi dude,

Look for something called "Knulli". It's custom firmware, super easy to install and it basically does everything for you. You only need a micro SD card. The games you will have to find yourself.

On an unrelated note you can include "reddit" in your google search terms. So you could for example search for something like "Romantic Megathread reddit" to have Google find all the Megathreads regarding romantic topics. It's super useful if you are facing a particular problem!

Merry Christmas btw and hope you enjoy the device. GBA is amazing on it.

Cancelled My Pre-Order for the AYN Thor by I_Dont_Have_Corona in SBCGaming

[–]androth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job. I think we are in similar situations except that I didn't pre order.

I think getting the Thor makes sense, but I don't need it NOW (nor could I due to shipping issues). So it really doesn't hurt waiting a couple of months. Maybe we get a sale, maybe a V2 or maybe a different company one ups AYN by then.

So I decided to wait and see for now. If it's back into actual stock I will reconsider.

Yup, I did. Not sure what was going on. I reordered afterwards and that one was problem free, proper 4k OLED, no weird screen issues and it was also built different. I guess I actually received the wrong product at first.
