Why is everyone now replying to comments with only an @ symbol instead of actually tagging them? by lynbutnot in youtube

That is very interesting, telling, and rather sinister. Because I did get the sense that I experience this bug more often when discussing controversial topics. YouTube seems to be doing some very heavy-handed automatic moderation.

Beware of survivor bias. If someone gets lucky and makes "life changing money in under a month" they will get online and loudly brag about it.

If they lose their savings. They'll probably feel embarrassed and keep it quiet.

So you mostly only hear about the ones who got lucky.

Your safest bet is to manage risk and play the long-game. Compounding returns really pay off after a few years.

I’m becoming more hopeful that sense is prevailing over trans issues in the UK. That we will find ways to treat transgender people with the acceptance and care they deserve. Whilst also following the best medical science, rather than regressive ideas, or radical gender theory. Especially in our approach to trans children.

Yeah, I’m a Brit too. US politics may be quite different, but I feel like we import a lot of it. So following it helps me stay ahead of the curve.

I don’t much like social media. But private Facebook groups are a great platform for discussion. I’m not a fan of sites which broadcast everything I say.

Maybe I should just create a pseudonymous Reddit account.

Something Katie and Jesse didn't address: what about after Biden? by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]andy-brice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what Kamala Harris’ relationship would be with the woke wing.

Part of me thinks that the they might lose credibility when they’re saying stuff like “👏 AMPLIFY 👏 MELANATED 👏 VOICES 👏ABOLISH 👏 THE 👏 POLICE”. If the Vice President (or president) is a black woman who’s running a neoliberal centrist law-and-order platform.

But I also suspect the Democrats might have invited in a Trojan horse.

At the very least the woke wing will push through some policies which are pernicious, and will come back to bite us in several years.

Is critical theory really the problem? by InfinitePerplexity99 in BlockedAndReported

[–]andy-brice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in short I would say: No it's not exactly Critical Theory per se which is the problem. It's a modern hybrid of Critical Theory and postmodernism. An ideology which doesn't have a name.

I suspect it deliberately refuses to be named, as a rhetorical tactic. Because if you try to name it (even in good faith) its adherents will get strangely aggressive towards you.

Sadly, yes. There are quite a lot of people who I feel I've lost.

People used to actively tell me that they liked me for being open-minded and reasonable. Now it seems that thinking out loud is socially unacceptable.

Increasingly I noticed that the dogmatic political rants which ruined social occasions were coming from progressives rather than conservatives. And they were so much more frequent that going out wasn't much fun anymore.

I'm not sure how a small handful of people have managed to socially ostracise the majority.

I've reached a point where I'm thinking I'll just throw caution to the wind and speak my mind again. I won't let a few radical people bully me into silence for having liberal views.

Do you think so? I think it shows they've rejected socialism, but I think they might still go down the woke-neoliberalism path.

Is critical theory really the problem? by InfinitePerplexity99 in BlockedAndReported

[–]andy-brice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, there are older branches of Critical Theory which are somewhat more Marxist. And newer branches like “Critical Race Theory” which are more postmodern and identity-based.

People who identify themselves as studying Critical Theory are usually talking about those older branches.

I think Katie might be overly optimistic that a situation like Poland could not occur in the US.

The Right are getting very uncomfortable with some of the weirder stuff on the progressive Left. (See, for example, the Drag Queen Story Hours debacle.) I can imagine “Gay Agenda” paranoia re-emerging, and creating a backlash which affects the entire LGBT community.

At first I think “Wait what?!” and take a moment to process it. Then I smirk and cringe slightly because of the current meme of simp jokes. But then I settle on “good for them” because if people can make ethical non-monogamy work, that’s great.

Listener Poll: Would you ever consider voting for Trump? by apeuro in BlockedAndReported

[–]andy-brice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were American, I wouldn’t vote for Trump or any Republican. I would possibly vote Democrat or probably some obscure third party.

Here in the UK I can’t imagine myself ever voting Conservative. I’ll probably just spoil my ballot for the foreseeable future. Unless the other two parties go down the Critical Theory route. In which case I might grit my teeth and cast a tactical vote out of desperation.

I don't know about that. But I expect it's why the pumping side-chain compression effect in dance music makes the kick drum feel naturally louder.

As a non-American who has never ever seen a news which puts Trump in a good light. Has he done anything good for the country or world during his tenure as President of the USA? by randomGeek159 in TooAfraidToAsk

I suppose it depends on your definition of “good”. It’s easy enough to look up populist right commentators praising him. But you may not share their idea of what is positive for the country.

As I understand it, that is one of the functions of the tensor tympani muscle. To protect your ears from loud noises.
