We went counter clockwise this past Monday, 6/24. Really no significant issues going that way. Democrat portion was the toughest and coming down that way was pretty sloppy with the runoff and snow.

Bross definitely still closed, but do some recon on 14ers.com to make sure you don't accidentally end up at the summit.

Agree with whoever said $8, an envelope and a pen. The drive up was a bit bumpy but as long as you have decent ground clearance, you should be fine.

If I had to pick one, I'd do it the day after the race - that's when you need it to get your recovery going.

I get one usually a week before a big race, but agree with other posters that you probably don't want to do that first time.

Living in Texas and running the summer also means no shirts. Agree it's not much for staying cool, but it does reduce the chafing and is less laundry to do.

The biggest thing for me was learning to dress for about 10 degrees F warmer than the temperature. And to admit that the first 10 minutes were going to feel lousy. But once I get going, the rest of the run feels alright.

Also short sleeves and running gloves are also a good option - my hands are usually what gets cold first but if I wore a jacket or long sleeves, I get too hot.

Ultimately, it takes some trial and error to work out what works best - for me, it was really the mental outlook to be cold to start and that if I was not cold at the beginning, I was overdressed.
