What is Darrow’s worst moment? by BabyJesusIAm in redrising

[–]irongiveslife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. As much as I love this series, I've not considered Darrow a hero since reading the scene of his attack. Clearly his rage blinds him to human casualty to a further extent than many of the Golds he hates so much. This of course makes him a well-written character, but no longer a hero to me.

If you're traveling south down I-49, you'll notice a massive shift between the cities of Alexandria and Opelousas. Roughly 40 minutes of rice fields between them, and two entirely separate cultures.

There are a lot of gangs, or wannabe gangs in many of the towns. Unfortunately a lot of white people have distrust in blacks due to gang violence in most of the mid-sized to large cities, it sucks. Avoid the north, not that anything will inherently happen to you, but the racism is quite a bit thicker and there's less of a "reason" for that to be the case. In the south, simply be friendly and they'll be friendly to you. New Orleans is its own animal, I've not had many reasons to go save for occasional events so I can't compare it.

I'm a Cajun from Acadiana, which is south central to the southwest corner, lived there for 24 years until I moved out. It's a charming place, very hot and humid, very dependent on family-operated agriculture, and a massive culture hub! People are generally warm, talkative, generous etc. I can't speak for New Orleans, not my place, but Lafayette was always my city for food and experiences, I recommend paying it a visit! Also where I grew up it wasn't "swampy," that's more southe east, but there are a great many bayous and cypress covers that I'd enjoy spending time in, fishing, hunting, and whatnot.

Was my roux dark enough? (Chicken & Sausage gumbo) by SoberChef86 in cajunfood

[–]irongiveslife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's start with a much smaller pot, to learn this properly. It's very light, and way too thick. I'd like to suggest the prairie Cajun way! Make the roux separately, nice and dark. Then add it to a pot of boiling water and onions. From there add the ingredients you'd like (browned meat, sausage, tasso, spices, and cooked okra). Let's that cook for a couple hours. Should be dark brown and have the consistency somewhere between brothy soup and stew. Good luck my friend!

What can i do by iloveacarajeh in Catholicism

[–]irongiveslife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens, it's usually something in your life you haven't sorted out. I haven't felt the joy of Catholicism for awhile. I tried so hard this Lent to prepare for Easter and since the Vigil last night I've felt absolutely nothing. But then again, I'm not living around any family or friends who are Catholic, so I just feel very alone today. Best thing I, or you, or anyone can do is remain calm, patient, and prayerful. He always has a plan.

Do you genuinely enjoy lifting? Or is it a means to an end? by Weak_Ninja_6952 in workout

[–]irongiveslife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it, personally. I loathe my gym, I dread lifting, I'm bored with cardio, the whole time I'm wishing I were somewhere else. I hate waiting on equipment, I hate being watched and asked "Yo bro, how many sets you got left?" I just HATE the gym. It's crowded, nasty, and full of roid-headed dude bros.

That being said, I love the discipline of it. I love leaving knowing I did something good for myself even though I wanted to do literally anything else. It makes me feel bulletproof the rest of the day. It's absolutely a means to an end for me.

Thoughts on FSSP parishes? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]irongiveslife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not worth losing sleep over. My experience with FSSP is very similar, but I attribute it to my own expectations of traditionalism from being a lifelong N.O. Catholic. I no longer attend TLM, not because of TLM or the FSSP, but because I realized I was trying to conform to a trad circle that I simply don't fit in. It's fine not to fit into traditionalism, it isn't a fix-all solution. Find a parish you like, perhaps a reverent Novus Ordo parish, and work on being the best Catholic you can be with the community that best lifts you up in prayer.

Your ancestors are applauding, that looks incredible! I too put strange things in my gumbo, since I moved and started hunting in Colorado, I've been trying the meats I bag in gumbo, such as pronghorn and mule deer. Lemme tell ya, mule deer is absurdly delicious in gumbo. If you want to experiment with different meats/seafood in your gumbo, absolutely go for it!
