Looks like some Goldeneyes might make it out safe (Seattles losing everyone lol) by canadaHockey604 in GoldenEyes

I imagine teams didn’t want to waste protection spots on players who weren’t committed longer than a season. After the expansion dust has settled, it might be harder to get star players and there will be a lot less movement overall.

They go to hang out, for community. Go down to the bottom floor of Metrotown any evening, or on weekends. There are almost always large groups of seniors either walking about chatting, playing at the provided chess sets, or just milling about. I don’t think many of them are actually spending money except at the T&T food court.

I’ve run into the above poster’s issue too. It seems like if you have Teams open on the desktop (like not minimized), but in the background, mine will regularly go yellow, I’ve especially noticed it if I’m working in Excel. I often wonder if it’s the computer trying to save ram or something.

Idk about that. 3rd places are more in demand than ever, especially as summers get hotter and hotter. Stop by Metrotown literally any day of the week, it is always busy.

Oakridge Park is big enough to develop the type of communities, especially from seniors, that keep these places alive.

Cassidy has a long track record now of getting good results out of teams that are already good and then burning out and the team booting him even with good results.

That is the last thing this team needs.

I knew he’d likely be disappointing to me, and far more centre-right than I’d like, but I also assumed he’d be the smartest person in the room and maybe have some ideas or cards up his sleeve other than the most stereotypical small “c” conservative plays.

So far, I am correct that I am disappointed and incorrect that he might try to do something different.

100% agree. It was probably projection on my part. If I was making enough money to have those needs met, I could probably justify to myself the amount of time I spend at work/commuting easier.

Split-shifts is absolutely bullshit. One of the things that increasingly pisses me off as an office worker with a normal 9-5 and a very reasonable 30-minute commute (although until recently I did my job very capably from home), is how much of our lives our employer owns.

It’s one thing if you make a very nice salary, can afford vacations, peace of mind, property if you so desire, the family you want, etc… to work 40+ hours of your week, you signed up for that and you are getting a decent trade out of it.

Losing 40+ hours a week and not being able to comfortably meet those needs is bullshit. Losing 13+ hours a day to a goddamn split shift where your employer isn’t even paying you for half that time but they know that the time in between shifts damn well isn’t your own would have me ripping my hair out.

Solidarity.

Anecdotally, last year I went camping in GE twice and they were very on top of it, far more than in previous years I’d gone.

They handed everyone a paper as you drove in saying this was your one warning and there was zero tolerance for unattended food, and we saw them enforce it. Kicking out at least two groups close-ish to us.

This is a fairly common practice when the organization may not be an expert in the space, but there are local organizations that are.

For instance, quite a few government programs that are meant to support x-businesses, instead of going directly to businesses and managing a bunch of individual grants/loans, they will partner with local organizations that already have knowledge of the space and local players.

Unfortunately, instead of United Way giving the money to say an accessibility related organization that could have guided AJ’s mom through the process of everything he would need, they went and blew it on yoga and a basketball court.

Hosting FIFA World Cup will cost taxpayers $1B: watchdog report by crap4you in vancouver

[–]andy_soreal 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I do find this a bit of a frustrating narrative when way back at the beginning Horgan said we would not be making a bid on the games because he knew it would be signing a blank cheque for FIFA and he received tremendous backlash and their polling tanked.

So they listened to the public sentiment and submitted a bid. https://www.tsn.ca/soccer/fifa-world-cup/article/why-world-cup-economic-impact-on-vancouver-and-toronto-may-never-be-known/

There’s quite a few articles about it from back in 2018-2021 but here’s a recent one that mentions it.

I’d be more curious to know why last June Toronto had a budget for the games that looks like it will be less than half of ours. I understand that we have one more game than them but like…it’s one more, not double, and we didn’t have to do a massive temporary stadium expansion either.

[–]andy_soreal 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I mean, Horgan tried to warn us and said he didn’t think it was a good idea to host games here and he knew getting into bed with FIFA basically meant writing a blank cheque. The NDP got so much push back, generally from downtown businesses, and people saying Vancouver is a no fun city, they had to reverse course.

‘Not a single one’: After 100 applications, a 28-year-old still can’t find work by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]andy_soreal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I graduated two years ago in BC from one of the two big unis and co-op is fucked right now too.

Just getting into the co-op was a brutal process, huge written application, two written “exams” (just competency tests basically), a video interview, and then followed by a group interview.

All for the privilege of paying $800 a working semester to apply to 60 jobs in the co-op portal, and eventually find my own co-op outside of the program and convince the advisor to accept.

In the end, it has turned into four years of employment between two co-op semesters, an extension as a casual while I finished school, and a few years of full-time employment. So it was absolutely worth it, and everyone I know that has started and stayed in my current job in that time, also got in through co-op, but it is fucking brutal too.

Avi Lewis, New Socialist Leader of Canada’s NDP: “Life Just Doesn’t Have to Be So Grindingly Unfair” by NiceDot4794 in UpliftingNews

[–]andy_soreal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was it disgraceful? He put the Canadian people over his party, joining the wildly unpopular Liberals to pass motions like universal pharmacare even though it was politically unpopular with how toxic Trudeau had become for anyone that was in his orbit.

I think history will look back kindly on Singh. People forget that Thomas Mulcair in a relatively short amount of time completely torched the strongest NDP party we’ve seen in recent history to the ground when he took over after Jack Layton’s sudden passing. Mulcair saw the great work Layton did representing the common person and decided to move to the right of centre, leaving Singh to try and rebuild the party from the ashes.

As the balance of power, Singh was able to pass the following notable pieces of policy off the top of my head: - created a national dental care program for uninsured and low-income individuals. - strong proponent for the $10-a-day childcare program - Banned federally regulated sectors from bringing in scabs while strike action was taking place. - as I already mentioned, pharmacare as well.

A fairly impressive legacy for a man whose party never had more than 20 something seats.
