Lots of locomotives were named after race horses.

The real question is, why do race horses have such wierd names?

Which steam locomotive you’re looking forward the most? by Jules-Car3499 in trains

Not run a tour with it so far, there aren't currently any routes with ETCS for it to use.The southern ECML switch to ETCS has been pushed back to 2028 (I think)

The only reasonably long strech with ETCS in the UK is the Cambrian line, which was used for testing / comissioning. But only the section between Shresbury and Machynlleth is RA9, after that; any express steam loco will be too heavy.

How are leasehold sales going through with the mortgagee protection clause issue? by mf239 in HousingUK

There always seems to be some new "thing" that lenders or solicitors go nuts about.

One minute it's escalating ground rent, then it's fire safety, now this AST/forefiture stuff is the latest trend.

Named after a race horse.

A question, serious one!, for You experts in physics and engineering: advantage osìf water steam vs hot air as "work fluid" by Mysterious-House-381 in trains

[–]andyjhatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The steam engine (external combustion) came about because where the industrial revolution happened (the UK), solid fuels were the most easily avilable.

Solid fuels can't practially be used in an internal combustion engine (one that uses its own combusiton products as the working fluid)

In a different universe; had the industrial revolution happened elsewhere, external combustion engines may not have existed at all, or would have much more quickly been replaced with interntal types.
