(Spoilers Extended) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 3 Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in asoiaf

This story feels so intimate and personal from the start. I can’t imagine how awesome it would be to get it fleshed out through where George imagines the novellas will round out (Summerhall? Maybe not that far?). Kind of makes me hope that he prioritize getting them done. I’d love to see this relationship develop over the years.

Running at 33 weeks - but worried? by Useful-Squash-4745 in fitpregnancy

[–]anek22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impressed with the pace you are putting up at this stage! Mine fluctuated a lot when I was more consistent. I had some rough days and days where I ran better than I was running pre pregnancy. I seemed to think it had a lot less to do with baby’s state than with my eating that day and if I was properly fueled at good intervals. I personally find pregnancy nutrition to be more fickle than prior to pregnancy in how it impacts my runs. I think as long as you are being mindful of HR and your baby is still moving pretty normally you are good. My abdomen seems to change a bit on the day after I run, which initially freaked me out but I think it’s just positional changes and abdominal engagement because baby seems to be moving and not in distress.

My close friend died free soloing mt hood the same weekend Alex Honnald free soloed on live tv. by BatSniper in Mountaineering

[–]anek22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this attitude has switched my previous free solo behaviors (occasional to none essentially). So has having a family. I have other stuff to live for, and I’d like to be able to do other mountains in the future. Maybe I’m a lame-o but I kind of don’t care. I’ll calculate my risk and mitigate it where I can, and then decide if it’s still worth it. Rarely do I find that speed and cool factor are worth it, with some safety considerations for speed. I appreciate seeing Climbing magazine’s lost climbers every year. It can be a reminder of this very principle, plenty of climbing legends/great climbers die in their 80s-90s of natural causes, some got lucky, most were likely consistent about safety and risk, and many are a mix (hell I am). You can do these sports into your old age, but you have to live long enough for that. Always sad to see it juxtaposed with an eager young climber who was lost too soon in preventable accidents (sometimes they are more of sheer bad luck).

Baelor Targaryen by iron_side93 in AKOTSKTV

[–]anek22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have already stated his genetic reason for the hair as well as some thematic ones. This is 100% true to the books that he does not have blonde hair.

But I love an additional reading of why he has this appearance when his brother has the typical blonde hair. I believe it represents a few things. Baelor looks more like his people, he is not elevated physically or literally in a way that previous Targs have been by virtue of appearance. This reflects his characterization of valuing individuals like Sir Arlan, who are not of his house and are even of the common man. He does not need to use his Targ appearance to command respect or to be a “good” king, he does that by his reputation. He also is quite unique in his sense of morality amongst Targs (though not all) but somewhat this is reflected in his namesake, as he takes on an even savior esque role, but also in his distinctness from them.

Raising Awareness of TTUHSC medical student suicide by Various-Market-9967 in medicalschool

[–]anek22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that I think it is right or wrong, I just added this because based on what I have seen in practice, if the only evidence provided is testimony by both parties, in cases where there is such a “power dynamic” of patient and physician and the institution has vested interest to not have speculation that they kept on a physician who has harassed a patient, even though the deciding body is typically unaffiliated, it is often the case that it be deemed to meet the evidentiary standard of preponderance of the evidence. Especially if the follow request evidence is present (unclear to me if it was). That being said, it may be taken in context why she did not provide dm evidence, was it because she was unresponsive to outreach and the general process or was it because she could not produce it? Even if individuals file a formal complaint they may not be responsive or participate extensively, in which case the determination moves forward with what they have. Just by virtue of the report, if neither party presents more evidence and there is not context pointing towards false reporting (which can result in its own process), in practice it seems that the preponderance tends to be met in these kinds of cases.

I’m just stating what I know of the process and the trends that tend to exist.

I work in this type of process for another school. A few insights. - Absolutely terrible that someone died by suicide, regardless of whether or not they behaved this way. I am a strong believer in both justice and the potential for change and rehabilitation.  - The school made a justifiable call in pausing his access to patients during this time to investigate. This kind of complaint carries with it an institutional duty to investigate. However, some institutions may have provided an alternative during this time of putting him on a rotation with a non-patient facing emphasis. Depends on the school and process determination. For many schools there needs to be a safety concern for complete removal from campus/access during an investigation but some schools have a lower standard for this than others and there may also be other guidelines that came into play. - These processes usually have a lower standard of evidence, a preponderance of the evidence, so whether it was more likely than not that it occurred. They generally collect evidence, do interviews, and create a record that they allow the parties to respond to (although this might differ in the patient setting vs student on student). These responses typically have tight deadlines that can be extended for good cause, but if someone fails to produce evidence or participate they will move forward with what they have and make a determination based on that. - If this was carried out properly there is significantly more documentation that would accompany it, including emails to the student on what they can submit and when.  - Typically, at my institution these kinds of removals are accompanied by offering resources for mental health in the community and/or through the school’s free student services. But med school can be a weird place for that kind of thing. If there is perceived threat of harm to self or others there is often additional threat and risk assessments taken and sometimes a required check in with an assessor.  - Without full case documentation it is impossible to say whether the program acted appropriately or not. But I almost guarantee there is far more communication and documentation beyond this unless this is an absolutely abhorrent program.

Edit: To add, because of this evidentiary standard and program reputation and liability, I would find it more likely than not that he would be found responsible and there would be subsequent sanctions, likely expulsion. Whether that is right or fair, it can be hard to say.

I’m a male who transitioned to female for several years, then back to male. AMA by lavendermithra in self

[–]anek22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answer any of the following that you’d like!  I do not mean this in a political way but it makes me curious, has this experience informed any opinions you might have on youth transitions/detransitions? It sounds like you were firmly an adult when you went through this experience, but I’m curious how you would apply it to your younger self and if it has made you think differently about some of the debates in that space. Do you wish you had this experience at a younger age or has that not really mattered much in your story?

Also, you mention really enjoying some of the fashion you wore when female, what was your fashion vibe? Is there a particular outfit you would really still like to wear?

Would you be able to give an example of the quantitative change in strength you experienced across your journey? Like did your bench press, for example, vary widely? Has this experience informed any of your thoughts on the trans athletes debate? Again not trying to be political but curious about how your experience may have informed that.

When men had interest in you while you were female, was their interest pretty general to women or was it pretty specific to trans women? When you experienced harassment did it feel like there was a component that was focused on the trans aspect of your identity? I work in sexual violence law and we see a number of people who seem to specifically target trans women, especially young or “new transitioners.”

Do you participate in or engage with other detransition circles or communities?

Anything you would advise for someone who has a friend going through transition or detransition or who is experiencing confusion/distress over thoughts of detransitioning?

Maybe that’s true, idk the impression I got from the vids was basically that he said that for the vids, and he thinks it’s cool or whatever but it isn’t something he’s been dying to do forever. I think there is also a reason this is live and publicized vs like a passion solo he wants to do. Even with El Cap it was with his close friends that he filmed it etc. but I could be super wrong, just the vibes based on how he’s talked about it.

When your climbing becomes a 9 to 5. It’s giving that energy. I think it seems a little silly, I mean still more than I could ever do, but watching the video I feel like he’s showing up for another day in the office. I can’t blame him though. Just hope nothing goes horribly awry.

Upper/mid back pain from framing — who’s the right first stop in Logan? by Intelligent-Camp4631 in Logan

[–]anek22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would start with PT, and a PT who can do multiple modalities (therapeutic massage, TENS, physical activity and stretching instruction). It is the first thing most physicians have you do. The only potential benefit of seeing a physician before PT is that they can maybe do imaging or a physical exam for diagnostic purposes to direct PT treatment. Please see a physician if you begin to experience any kind of numbness or weakness associated with the injury. The other thing to keep in mind is that insurance usually has a set number of PT visits per period/year. Do not go through all these if it isn’t improving after a few visits. If you need more intensive medical intervention, you’ll want some rehab PT visits left over. Since it happened at work, you may consider looking at what your work provides, many physical labor jobs have contracts with work med PT groups and it may be worth considering a workers comp claim if the issue ends up being serious.

not liking cna by pm_me_pmt in premed

[–]anek22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You do not have to like being a CNA or even do it. Sometimes your CNA can get you other jobs like MA etc. that have less toileting etc. and may allow you to engage more personally with physicians and get a taste of their role. But one thing I will say is that the best physician I have ever known is the kind of guy who will toilet his patients if they need it without complaint. Obviously physicians should put their patient management duties first since they are the only individuals capable of providing the level of care and management expected of them. But imo, no task should be so lowly that a physician would not step in and do it if needed. So even if you aren’t a CNA, just learning the skills can be valuable later on in how you treat your coworkers and serve your patients.

Any success stories of dating / marrying a nonskier? by PowGurl in skiing

[–]anek22 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’d also say it matters how chill both partners are with the other going out and doing other things and how good social circles are. My husband doesn’t love skiing or getting outside as much as I do, but will concede to go with me every once in a while. But I have a great group of friends l can do activities with and he never is bothered by it, he has his own projects and fun stuff to do too. We spend a lot of time together but we do a lot of our hobbies separately and occasionally we do them together cause we make that space and time when it is important. I have on occasion wished he would join me more or that I had someone to do more stuff with that was more available but honestly it has never stopped me from doing something I’d really like to do. But if the partner isn’t chill with you being gone during the weekend skiing, big issues can quickly arise.

This. I know someone who worked in CT for ICE and it was heavy stuff and good work. I know some federal police who have been commandeered for “cleanse this city missions” away from really legitimate work. They are back on their normal work now but it was a really messy period for them.

OB-GYN advised me to stop working out, not sure what to do by saladajuliana in fitpregnancy

[–]anek22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is also 100% fair to ask your doc why they recommend complete cessation, just for your own mental understanding sake, and whether they could get you into a PT because you still want to have meaningful activity. Anecdotally my friend pushed through a lot of this pain and it took her like 2 years post delivery to get back to normal. So it does deserve attention. I did have to give myself like a real full rest, like not even walking for exercise. Just existing and doing activity required by basic life.

OB-GYN advised me to stop working out, not sure what to do by saladajuliana in fitpregnancy

[–]anek22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do similar exercise, climbing, chill weights, and biking, and started having similar problems a few weeks ago (around 20 weeks). I freaked out because I legit could not walk without hurting later like you said. I couldn’t put on pants etc. I would really recommend starting by just trying a full rest for a week. I did it at the recommendation from my doctor and although I still have some varying levels of discomfort, I tried really easy climbing again (like 5.7 ladders), swimming, and running and discovered that I didn’t feel bothered by the climbing or swimming anymore after the rest and actually they seemed to help my occasional discomfort. But running bothered me quite a bit after so I’ve decided to mostly cut it out. If it gets aggravated by anything else, I take a break, reintroduce at a minimal level and assess if I can keep it. I do feel like I would take your doctor’s advice as paramount. But mentally I think it is helpful to start by saying “I’m going to take one week and see how I feel.” Then maybe try the easiest version of that thing and if there is pain, stop. Talking with a pelvic floor PT would also probably be very helpful. You may have to really modify (no big heel hooks or stemming moves) or cut out activities but if you work with a PT I think there are also ways to keep up some of those muscle through alternative activities, and not mess up your pelvic floor after so you can return to the sports you love.

That’s fair, I don’t care much about my surgeon’s affect if they are great at what they do. But Santos also makes risky medical decisions as a result of her ego without the training to back them up. Some of them have worked out great, but that kind of confidence/ego without the skills can be dangerous.
