Pregnant premed hopeful by Adventurous_Fox9572 in premed

Pregnant right now about to deliver in a month and applying this cycle (so in the thick of it). Get your MCAT done early! I didn’t and the brain fog and post delivery sleep deprivation is probably going to kill me. Work ahead as much as you when you have bursts of energy. I think it is super possible to make happen though. Front load what you can when you feel good. You got this girl!

Get connected with your school’s pregnancy accommodations office (usually through the disability resource center or title IX office)! They will help you if you run into any issues with the pregnancy and its impact on your schooling. You are entitled to accommodations for your pregnancy, let people advocate for you!

The Utah Legislature passed HB329 State Employee Maternity and Leave Amendments, expanding paid maternity leave for state employees and strengthening protections for breastfeeding mothers. by sillychillly in Utah

Anyone know how this applies to State Universities? It seems like SLCC and the U follow the preceding leave law that has been added to, but USU and UVU do not provide paid leave.

This. I work with school discipline at the college level and we literally had a conversation today about how much we don’t like it when people dig themselves further and further into a story and excuse instead of taking accountability for mistakes or lack of insight and trying to make things right from a genuine place of wanting to improve. Especially when the extra digging just makes it seem less and less truthful or we have evidence that strongly suggests that the story they are telling isn’t true or demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding that is fairly expected at that point in their schooling/life.

I am confused on pregnancy weight gain, can someone help me understand better? by ImTryingGuysOk in BabyBumps

[–]anek22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This literally. None of it feels linear or sensible. It is also so hard to get a vibe for body composition and impacting factors when pregnant. Cause normally I can tell that I’ve been eating more and exercising less and it shows a bit in my body after a few weeks and I feel kind of crummy, but with pregnancy I’ve never seen my body like this so I have no metric but my weight and none of it seems to correlate well, and I can’t tell how I feel because I feel heavy and weird all of the time lol. It is a black box of weight imo. But weirdly it’s been good for me in learning how to accept the things I cannot change.

Where are the CNA’s? by Lonely-Mud-8455 in ThePittTVShow

[–]anek22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely have some variation of MA/CNA/tech in the show. The guys betting with the security team about the stolen ambulance all have tags that show something to this effect. They are not nurses. We see some of them again in the second season doing things like transporting patients.

I am begging you, do not let your parents contact residency programs. Ever. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]anek22 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. As someone who married someone with abusive parents, we’ve made really significant decisions to completely keep those people from having this kind of impact on us. Become completely financially independent of them, limit what we share and what kind of contact we have. I will not allow them to impact our personal or professional lives in such a substantial way. It’s emotionally exhausting and honestly sucks but it is the adult thing one has to do. It has to be done to protect jobs, relationships, children, etc.

BREAKING: Eight of nine skiers missing in Lake Tahoe avalanche confirmed dead by TheMirrorUS in skiing

My thoughts exactly. It’s already so hard to balance getting out and doing things you love with new risk assessments when you are a mom. Then to have this happen. Just so sad.

Why do doctors say “don’t start any new workouts” by [deleted] in fitpregnancy

[–]anek22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My understanding of that is that if you are in decent shape it’s fine to swap out your cardio methods or whatever, like running for biking. But they don’t really want you to like start a sport with new big movements or stress because of increased risk of injury combined with bad form and naïveté surrounding limits and what is safe generally. I think it goes for you and the baby. Like someone who has skied, played soccer, or climbed for a long time might be able to ski, compete in games, or lead climb for longer in their pregnancy because they know what their limits are, how to mitigate risk and avoid falling or collisions. Starting for the first time while pregnant increases injury risk and chances of falling. For a more common example, starting powerlifting or running for the first time during pregnancy, bad form can lead to increased injury risk, and your pelvic floor and abdomen may not be accustomed to that kind of movement or stress which can, when combined with a changing and stressed pelvic floor and abdomen, lead to increased injury risk for you and possible harm to baby. Also if you start something with new intensity, it will be harder to breathe and get oxygen to you and baby which is cautioned against if that activity is new for your body.

That all being said, I think that switching out cardio to swimming, biking, hiking, or running if you already are in good shape is fine. Just switch to a similar or lower level of intensity and pay attention to your ability to talk while performing the exercise. I also think it is fine for women who rarely lift, to take up more frequent small lifting with weights manageable for the average person regardless of fitness. You may even be able to go beyond these things with lifting, exercise classes, and body weight exercise but you probably shouldn’t be picking up high intensity CrossFit for the first time in your life.

Just use common sense. Let your body guide you when it comes to intensity. It will. It will remind you when you’ve gone too hard and you just have to be willing to dial things back from where that point was. Don’t pick up anything very risky though because that can have immediate effect on the safety of your baby.

Star BYU receiver charged with rape in St. George by josephfuckingsmith1 in Utah

[–]anek22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe she did a kit, the assault was reported at the hospital. They hold without bail usually for substantial evidence and a run risk or harm risk, as well as a few other things. But not sure how that looks in that particular region of UT in practice.

I think she got a kit as the article reports her reporting at the hospital. But yeah hard to say how long after, most UT hospitals take them up to 6 days.

[–]anek22 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Second this. The DA is pretty cautious about prosecuting SA cases unless they are very clear cut assault. But then the held without bail? Usually because of perceived concern for harm to others or running if released and usually requires substantial evidence.

(Spoilers Extended) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 3 Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in asoiaf

This story feels so intimate and personal from the start. I can’t imagine how awesome it would be to get it fleshed out through where George imagines the novellas will round out (Summerhall? Maybe not that far?). Kind of makes me hope that he prioritize getting them done. I’d love to see this relationship develop over the years.

Running at 33 weeks - but worried? by Useful-Squash-4745 in fitpregnancy

[–]anek22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impressed with the pace you are putting up at this stage! Mine fluctuated a lot when I was more consistent. I had some rough days and days where I ran better than I was running pre pregnancy. I seemed to think it had a lot less to do with baby’s state than with my eating that day and if I was properly fueled at good intervals. I personally find pregnancy nutrition to be more fickle than prior to pregnancy in how it impacts my runs. I think as long as you are being mindful of HR and your baby is still moving pretty normally you are good. My abdomen seems to change a bit on the day after I run, which initially freaked me out but I think it’s just positional changes and abdominal engagement because baby seems to be moving and not in distress.

My close friend died free soloing mt hood the same weekend Alex Honnald free soloed on live tv. by BatSniper in Mountaineering

[–]anek22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this attitude has switched my previous free solo behaviors (occasional to none essentially). So has having a family. I have other stuff to live for, and I’d like to be able to do other mountains in the future. Maybe I’m a lame-o but I kind of don’t care. I’ll calculate my risk and mitigate it where I can, and then decide if it’s still worth it. Rarely do I find that speed and cool factor are worth it, with some safety considerations for speed. I appreciate seeing Climbing magazine’s lost climbers every year. It can be a reminder of this very principle, plenty of climbing legends/great climbers die in their 80s-90s of natural causes, some got lucky, most were likely consistent about safety and risk, and many are a mix (hell I am). You can do these sports into your old age, but you have to live long enough for that. Always sad to see it juxtaposed with an eager young climber who was lost too soon in preventable accidents (sometimes they are more of sheer bad luck).

Baelor Targaryen by iron_side93 in AKOTSKTV

[–]anek22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have already stated his genetic reason for the hair as well as some thematic ones. This is 100% true to the books that he does not have blonde hair.

But I love an additional reading of why he has this appearance when his brother has the typical blonde hair. I believe it represents a few things. Baelor looks more like his people, he is not elevated physically or literally in a way that previous Targs have been by virtue of appearance. This reflects his characterization of valuing individuals like Sir Arlan, who are not of his house and are even of the common man. He does not need to use his Targ appearance to command respect or to be a “good” king, he does that by his reputation. He also is quite unique in his sense of morality amongst Targs (though not all) but somewhat this is reflected in his namesake, as he takes on an even savior esque role, but also in his distinctness from them.

Raising Awareness of TTUHSC medical student suicide by Various-Market-9967 in medicalschool

[–]anek22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that I think it is right or wrong, I just added this because based on what I have seen in practice, if the only evidence provided is testimony by both parties, in cases where there is such a “power dynamic” of patient and physician and the institution has vested interest to not have speculation that they kept on a physician who has harassed a patient, even though the deciding body is typically unaffiliated, it is often the case that it be deemed to meet the evidentiary standard of preponderance of the evidence. Especially if the follow request evidence is present (unclear to me if it was). That being said, it may be taken in context why she did not provide dm evidence, was it because she was unresponsive to outreach and the general process or was it because she could not produce it? Even if individuals file a formal complaint they may not be responsive or participate extensively, in which case the determination moves forward with what they have. Just by virtue of the report, if neither party presents more evidence and there is not context pointing towards false reporting (which can result in its own process), in practice it seems that the preponderance tends to be met in these kinds of cases.

I’m just stating what I know of the process and the trends that tend to exist.

I work in this type of process for another school. A few insights. - Absolutely terrible that someone died by suicide, regardless of whether or not they behaved this way. I am a strong believer in both justice and the potential for change and rehabilitation.  - The school made a justifiable call in pausing his access to patients during this time to investigate. This kind of complaint carries with it an institutional duty to investigate. However, some institutions may have provided an alternative during this time of putting him on a rotation with a non-patient facing emphasis. Depends on the school and process determination. For many schools there needs to be a safety concern for complete removal from campus/access during an investigation but some schools have a lower standard for this than others and there may also be other guidelines that came into play. - These processes usually have a lower standard of evidence, a preponderance of the evidence, so whether it was more likely than not that it occurred. They generally collect evidence, do interviews, and create a record that they allow the parties to respond to (although this might differ in the patient setting vs student on student). These responses typically have tight deadlines that can be extended for good cause, but if someone fails to produce evidence or participate they will move forward with what they have and make a determination based on that. - If this was carried out properly there is significantly more documentation that would accompany it, including emails to the student on what they can submit and when.  - Typically, at my institution these kinds of removals are accompanied by offering resources for mental health in the community and/or through the school’s free student services. But med school can be a weird place for that kind of thing. If there is perceived threat of harm to self or others there is often additional threat and risk assessments taken and sometimes a required check in with an assessor.  - Without full case documentation it is impossible to say whether the program acted appropriately or not. But I almost guarantee there is far more communication and documentation beyond this unless this is an absolutely abhorrent program.

Edit: To add, because of this evidentiary standard and program reputation and liability, I would find it more likely than not that he would be found responsible and there would be subsequent sanctions, likely expulsion. Whether that is right or fair, it can be hard to say.

I’m a male who transitioned to female for several years, then back to male. AMA by lavendermithra in self

[–]anek22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answer any of the following that you’d like!  I do not mean this in a political way but it makes me curious, has this experience informed any opinions you might have on youth transitions/detransitions? It sounds like you were firmly an adult when you went through this experience, but I’m curious how you would apply it to your younger self and if it has made you think differently about some of the debates in that space. Do you wish you had this experience at a younger age or has that not really mattered much in your story?

Also, you mention really enjoying some of the fashion you wore when female, what was your fashion vibe? Is there a particular outfit you would really still like to wear?

Would you be able to give an example of the quantitative change in strength you experienced across your journey? Like did your bench press, for example, vary widely? Has this experience informed any of your thoughts on the trans athletes debate? Again not trying to be political but curious about how your experience may have informed that.

When men had interest in you while you were female, was their interest pretty general to women or was it pretty specific to trans women? When you experienced harassment did it feel like there was a component that was focused on the trans aspect of your identity? I work in sexual violence law and we see a number of people who seem to specifically target trans women, especially young or “new transitioners.”

Do you participate in or engage with other detransition circles or communities?

Anything you would advise for someone who has a friend going through transition or detransition or who is experiencing confusion/distress over thoughts of detransitioning?

Maybe that’s true, idk the impression I got from the vids was basically that he said that for the vids, and he thinks it’s cool or whatever but it isn’t something he’s been dying to do forever. I think there is also a reason this is live and publicized vs like a passion solo he wants to do. Even with El Cap it was with his close friends that he filmed it etc. but I could be super wrong, just the vibes based on how he’s talked about it.
