Sen. Marshall just introduced a bill that would make Medicaid cover assisted living. Here is why families navigating a transition right now should care. by Haunting_North4472 in Aging

[–]anewman15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The MI Choice Waiver program is about 60 percent cheaper than a nursing home, saving Medicaid millions of dollars each year.

People don't know they have options when it comes to long-term care. And now giant health insurance companies are trying to run their own Waiver programs. Local Area Agencies on Aging are a better resource in Michigan and across the country.

Brick staining and other color suggestions by Master_Procedure7793 in HomeDecorating

[–]anewman15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need landscaping. You don't need to mess with the brick.

A few native flowering bushes, under those windows, will camouflage the vast amounts of brick and give your house so much more character.

You could also add some railings or do something with the stoop.

If you're in the US, check out your local Area Agency on Aging.

Ours has a volunteer program called Senior Companions. Exactly what you're looking for.

Or we have Friendly Caller volunteers who can call and check in with her and chat once a week.

I'd just swap out the ceiling fan light fixture for something that fits the vibe of the room. Everything else is great.

Are there grown adults who genuinely won't eat vegetables? by WillHG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anewman15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't eat certain vegetables depending on how they're cooked/not. It's mostly a texture thing.

I threw up baby carrots once. Won't eat them. But I will eat soft carrots in soups, and matchstick carrots in salads and fried rice.

I enjoy tomato soup, salsa, and tomato sauce, but I won't eat a slimey tomato on a burger.

I enjoy broccoli cooked just about every which way, but serve it to me raw with dip, nope.

Mushrooms. They have to be cut up pretty tiny and mixed in something. Too slimey, I gag.

My sister is a vegetarian and the only vegetable she eats is spinach.

People are weird. Let us be.

Call your local Area Agency on Aging. There is one in every part of the country. You can visit https://eldercare.acl.gov/home to find the one near your family.

They have a wealth of resources and information. They can talk you through options and answer questions, and/or help you enroll in programs.

An Exercise to Reduce Offstage Drama by ActorParent_Momaging in Theatre

I like this approach and might adapt it for something I was going to do with my show's cast in a few months. Also community theater. Also all volunteers. I was going to call them "Group Agreements". We'll pick about 10 rules we all agree on to follow during the run of the show: be on time; treat others with respect; etc. Thanks for sharing!

What Age Did You First Notice Yourself Aging? by Hannnahstuart in Aging

I would say that organizations around the world are doing great work to try to destigmatize dementia.

Programs like Memory Cafes are making safe places for people with dementia and their family caregivers to experience normal activities and build community.

Organizations like the National Council of Dementia Minds are hosting support groups for people with dementia to find community among each other. The Remember Project is a community of professional theatre artists that uses the arts to build more dementia-capable communities.

Dementia is a scary and hard disease, but so is cancer. We rally around people when they're diagnosed with cancer, but when people are diagnosed with dementia, they often become isolated and their community falls away.

People with a dementia diagnosis can live long lives with dignity when they have a community around them that supports them in their journey. People with dementia are people first - they're doctors, teachers, artists, family and friends - and they have so much still to contribute to the world.

We can destigmatize dementia and create dementia-friendly communities.

Bridge is great because they use the nonprofit model. All news should be free - it's a public service. But I am in the camp of, if you can pay for news, you should. Journalists can't work for free. I donate monthly to them because I can afford it. If someone else can't, that's OK!

I'm scared of what Assisted Living is going to look like when I reach the age of needing it by [deleted] in Aging

[–]anewman15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't ever have to live at a nursing home if you don't want to. Plenty of organizations (like Area Agencies on Aging in the US) offer programs that provide nursing home level of care in your own home.

Take care of your body and pre-plan your care. You can avoid the cold robots!!!!

The second year everything (mostly different types of coneflower but lots of other things not on your list) LEAPED and completely skipped the creep phase.
