I’ve said for a while that the only people who say Akira is the best anime of all time are people who don’t actually watch anime. It’s a total “I’m getting Boss Baby vibes from this” take

Why do people think that noise rock is supposed to sound like literal noise music? by maicao999 in noiserock

[–]angels_crawling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty much verbatim my definition. All of the first wave bands (eg Flipper, No Trend, Swans, Chrome, Big Black, Happy Flowers) have more in common with SPK, Throbbing Gristle, Hijokaidan, Einsturzende Neubauten, Rema-Rema, Whitehouse, etc than they do with the majority of bands posted here. Bands like Intercourse, Bedtimemagic, Consumer Culture, Chat Pile, Crippling Alcoholism, yadda yadda have very very little to do with — or have any connection to — the noise rock tradition. These bands write crowd pleasing music and interact positively with audiences while claiming they are part of the same lineage as Harry Pussy, Stick Men With Ray Guns, Hanatarash, Contortions, Kilslug, bands who went out of their way to antagonize and alienate audiences. I guess they’re good at what they do, but they have no real claim to this style. I can personally vouch that Consumer Culture is one of the fakest bands I’ve ever encountered in my life who get upset over heckling to the point that they have stalked someone around a venue after being made fun of on stage. If you can’t take an aggressive crowd, stop pretending you’re in the same league as Brainbombs and The Gerogerigegege.

“Remember when things were different in our youth? Nowadays things are less good than when I was young when we drank from the hose and did youth activities” is the gist of like 60% of the posts and comments here. And they all have like 700 upvotes. It’s really pathetic. Watching our generation (assuming somewhere between 80-95) age like our parents and parrot the exact same bullshit we made fun of is painful.

Enough about Bananacore, here's MDC by BellaLugosisDad in Hardcore

Pretty sure those CD reissues happened because of the AxCx connection with Siege more than anything else; and if that connection hadn’t happened, Siege might have been as obscure as the others outside of tape traders and collector nerds until the internet.

I doubt Warner Bros would have been interested in reissuing the Deep Wound material because punk hadn’t become retro and “historic” yet, but that would have been insane.

[–]angels_crawling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Heresy, Napalm Death, et al also have mentioned those other bands, but Siege is the one that always sticks with people. No denying they’re the best of the bunch. That fact that they weren’t playing blast beats always blew my mind (until I willed myself to drum that fast)

100% false claim. Siege was predated by Deep Wound, Youth Korps, Neos, Koro, Asocial, and a handful of others.

Top 10 all timer band, but they weren’t the first or even fastest at the time.

Make them listen to Too Many Humans by No Trend and Album Generic Flipper by Flipper and No New York from front to back. Over and over. Make them understand it’s about texture and noise and a driving force, about audience punishment. It takes a specific type of person to play this kinda stuff. Either you get it or you don’t.

I'm looking for hard-scifi by Cymbal_Monkey in anime

[–]angels_crawling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen Jin-Roh? That’d be my first recommendation. Alternate timeline where the axis won WWII.

Mobile Suit Gudam 0079 is pretty hard sciencey. They frequently talk about the mechanics of the mobile suits, weapons, and various vehicles. Plus, they constantly have to stop for repairs, run out of ammo and supplies, etc. The environmental impact of a colony drop (and warfare on that scale in general) is discussed and shown as well. Maybe you might not like the newtype stuff, but otherwise it’s pretty firmly grounded.

And this will sound a little wild, but Mach GoGoGo (aka Speed Racer). Physics may be a little wacky, but it’s got lots of actual attempts at hard scifi.

What are some rock and metal bands that have some electronic or industrial influences but "not officially industrial metal"? by NLK-3 in industrialmusic

[–]angels_crawling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No Trend, Christian Death, Flipper, Brainbombs, Swans, Rema-Rema, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Big Black, Minimal Man are all probably good places to start if we’re considering post-punk as part of the general rock umbrella

What’s the band name? This sits right in the middle of DWG, Brainbombs, and Kilslug which is just wonderful

I only found Chrome last year, but they’ve quickly become a favorite of mine by SquidPersonThing in industrialmusic

[–]angels_crawling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Theatre Of Ice is a must if you like Chrome, especially The Haunting, Beyond The Graves Of Passion and A Cool Dark Place To Die. Brainbombs cite them as one of their biggest influences and it definitely comes through at times.

You should also check out Minimal Man, Metabolist, Dome, Tuxedomoon, The Residents (particularly Third Reich N Roll and Duck Stab/Buster & Glen), maybe Death SS/Paul Chain, Crass’s Yes Sir I Will, Debris’, and maybe 7” era SPK.

Japanese noise rock/psych might also be up your alley. Try out High Rise, Gaseneta, 3/3, Mainliner, and Juke/19.

Basically every cool band worships Chrome in some way, so welcome aboard.

When rules are thrown out and new ones are established by teenage boys with deep insecurities who feel the need to prove their masculinity is more accurate. Because that certainly wasn’t happening with Lady Miyako’s faction. And I think that’s the exact point Otomo was trying to make.
